The History of the Barbie® Doll How a Fashion Icon Was Born

The moment Barbie® doll was introduced to the world, an icon was born. Debuting in 1959 as “The Teenage Fashion Model,” Barbie Millicent Roberts from (fictional) Willows, Wisconsin allowed girls to experience fashion play and to explore various dreams, fantasies and aspirations without ever leaving home. Over the years, Barbie doll has always been a reflection of the times, whether following style trends or blazing her own fashion trail. The Most Collectible Doll in the World® has cemented her place in pop culture history — yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Ruth and Elliot Handler founded Mattel Creations in 1945, and 14 years later, Ruth Handler gave the world the Barbie doll. When asked her relationship to Barbie, Ruth simply replied, “I’m Barbie’s mom.” Ruth had watched her daughter Barbara and friends play with paper dolls of grown-up women, and imagining themselves in grown-up roles. Ruth immediately recognized that experimenting with the future from a safe distance through pretend play was an important part of growing up. Finally, the idea hit her — why not make a teenage doll that little girls could play with? She set out to investigate the possibilities. She also noticed a product void and was determined to fill that niche with a three-dimensional fashion doll. The Barbie Story | 5

“Barbie always represented the

fact that a woman has choices.” The market research came back – lots of threedimensional baby and toddler dolls were available in the 1950s, but no older dolls were on the market. Despite initial skepticism from her husband, Ruth pursued her vision for three years, finally unveiling Barbie in March 9, 1959. Her historic debut took place at the New York Toy Fair, shocking industry pundits and toy critics. They’d never seen anything like Barbie, and didn’t realize the world had been waiting for someone just like her. Buoyed by Ruth’s unerring instincts, and thanks to an innovative television ad campaign, the doll quickly caught the attention of little girls across the country, proving all the skeptics wrong. The very first Barbie doll, The #1 Ponytail Barbie, sported her famous ponytail hairstyle, eye-popping black-and-white bathing suit, stylish open-toed shoes, too-cool shades and golden hoop earrings. She sold for $3. Additional fashions based on the

6 | The Barbie Story

latest runway trends from Paris ranged from $1 to $5. Girls could truly play fashion show with their “teenage fashion model” of a doll. In the first year, 300,000 Barbie dolls were sold. With the mothers and daughters of America making The Teenage Fashion Model and subsequent dolls such a runaway success, Barbie expanded her range with new outfits, and even new careers. “My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be,” Ruth said. “Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.” Barbie is the most popular doll in the world. She is a worldwide fashion muse and pop culture icon for girls of all ages. Today, with a professional resume thicker than a phonebook, a circle of friends that rival any social network and a community of caring that spans the globe, Barbie continues to find new ways to inspire and encourage the next generation of girls.
