A Message from the Chairman

It’s

hard to believe that s ummer is right around the corner, but the Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association (SDMA) and other area organizations are planning ahead, hosting an a rray of e xciting events that promise to bring thousands of locals and visitors to downtown in the weeks and months to come. Mark your calendars for Father’s Day on Sunday, June 19, when the SDMA and Vintage Motors of Sarasota will be sponsoring the Fourth Ron Soto, Annual Fathers & Fenders Car Show in Five SDMA’s Chairman Points Park. Held rain or shine, this popular event draws hundreds of vintage car owners and thousands of attendees eager to indulge Dad’s love of cars on his special day. A true family event, Fathers & Fenders will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and will feature live music, delicious food and a full bar! Thanks to Suncoast Charities for Children and its executive director, Lucy Nicandri, the 32nd Annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival—which has grown from a small boat race to a nine-day event—will be held once again from Saturday, June 25, through Monday, July 4, offering more than a dozen events for families to enjoy! Of special interest is the “Boats by the Bay Downtown Block Party” on Friday, July 1, and the “Fireworks Spectacular” that will light up the sky at the bayfront after nightfall on July 4. I also would like to take this opportunity to remind you to submit a photo of your dog for the “Downtown Wag’s” 1st Cover Photo Contest! One lucky winner will be featured on the cover of the A ugust/September issue of The VOICE and will win a gift basket filled with goodies! The contest is open to everyone who lives and works in downtown Sarasota. And there’s good news—the deadline has been extended to Friday, June 24, which gives you plenty of time to submit a photo online at www. sarasotadowntownmerchants.com. Now, chances are your pup isn’t any cuter than my dog—JR, our mascot at Soto O pticians, who is pictured at left—but enter your photos, anyway! Not to w orry… JR isn’t eligible to enter, but he is wondering if he can be one of the contest’s judges! Finally, we are running another contest in this issue of The VOICE to test how well you know downtown Sarasota: Can you identify the location of the waterfall featured on our cover? If so, enter the contest online at www. sarasotadowntownmerchants.com and become eligible to win a gift certificate that generously has been donated by Sully at Patricks 1481! I hope to see all of our SDMA members at the monthly meeting on Thursday, May 12, when Captain Kevin Stiff of the S arasota Police Department will be our guest speaker. See the SDMA website and watch your e-mail for all of the details! 3

Louies Modern—a Cosmopolitan Dining

The VOICE of the Downtown Merchants

L

ouies Modern opened in April 2013 and, from the beginning, the goal of this family-owned restaurant has been to introduce both local patrons and downtown Sarasota’s visitors to innovative, coast-to-coast dining trends, while delivering an excellent value in downtown Sarasota. “People are surprised and pleased that they can enjoy this level of dining experience so affordably here in Sarasota,” says Eric Hale, the restaurant’s general manager. “We strive to continually offer high-quality, innovative dining that appeals to both locals and people who come from cosmopolitan areas around the world.” Located on the ground floor of the ultra-modern, award-winning Palm Avenue parking complex, Louies Modern is the newest addition to the restaurants run by the Seidenstickers, who also own Libby’s Cafe + Bar on South Osprey Avenue. As one of downtown’s trendiest hot spots, Louies Modern honors Steve Seidensticker’s father, Louie, a “self-taught culinary master” who reveled in good food, good cocktails and the good company of family and friends. In addition to breakfast bites that begin at 8 a.m., Louies Modern hosts lunch and dinner daily, along with a Sunday brunch and a unique “Moderne Theatre” menu designed to accommodate patrons attending local cultural events. The Sunday Market Brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features a carving station with prime rib and ham, Alaskan King Crab Legs and Cajun Shrimp, Eggs Benedict, made-to-order omelets, waffles and pancakes, salads, desserts and more. Especially appealing are the “bottomless” Mimosas and Bloody Marys that are available for $5. The Moderne Theatre menu includes a first course, such as a Vegan 12 Vegetable Minestra or a house salad, selected entrées, including Shrimp and Bay Scallop Fettucine Alfredo or Wood Oven Half-Chicken with Cauliflower Mash, a glass of selected wine and a freshly baked cookie for dessert. Experience on Palm Avenue option is available from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Without question, it is the lunch and dinner menus that have earned Louies Modern a prominent place on downtown Sarasota’s culinary map. In fact, the restaurant’s Kale Caesar Salad was recently featured in Sarasota magazine. With snacks, appetizers, soups and salads, vegetables and classic “Sea” & “Land” selections, along with a hearty choice of side dishes, the options are nearly endless, the flavors, inventive, and, best of all, the prices, affordable. Described as “casual chic” with a modern, yet welcoming ambiance, Louies Modern features both indoor and street-side dining, as well as comfy outdoor couches where friends frequently meet and linger for a cocktail and conversation. The bar offers spacious, yet intimate seating, and in the dining room, an open kitchen that features a wood-burning oven and grill allows patrons an opportunity to glimpse the chefs at work as their dishes are prepared. While introducing patrons to inventive dining experiences is the mission at Louies Modern, the restaurant also spotlights national trends in new spirits. The specialty cocktail menu is updated weekly and includes options not available elsewhere in Sarasota. Currently more than 80 bourbons, whiskeys and ryes line the bar, and seasonal specialty cocktails are developed by a master mixologist. And, of course, the bar offers an extensive selection of award-winning wines, premium martinis and craft beers, as well as daily handcrafted cocktail specials. Louies Modern always is a popular downtown gathering place from 4 to 7 p.m. daily during Happy Hour, which offers drink specials and a taste-tempting, small-bites menu with Kung POW Chicken Potstickers, Brie and Beet Arancini and Smoked Trout Deviled Eggs. Accommodating up to 250 guests, The Francis, Louies Modern’s “boutique special events venue,” is right next door and features two large ballrooms and a private dining room, all available for special events year-round. Located at 1289 North Palm Avenue, Louies Modern is open daily from 8 a.m. for coffee and breakfast bites, and serves weekday lunch from 11:30 a.m., Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. to close. Did You Know? Did you know that scenes from “The Greatest Show on Earth,” a film about circus life released in 1952, were filmed at the actual winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus right here in Sarasota? The film was directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starred Charlton H eston, Betty Hutton, James Stewart, Cornel Wilde, Dorothy Lamour and Emmett Kelly.

Fascinating Historical Facts About Sarasota The following winter, “The Greatest Show on Earth” premiered at the Florida Theater (now the Sarasota Opera House). Before the screening, a parade, led by Florida’s Governor Fuller Warren and circus clown Emmett Kelly, entertained the thousands of people lining the streets. Members of the audience applauded as they saw themselves and their friends and relatives in the movie that had captured their attention the year before.

More than 1,000 Sarasotans were paid members of the cast, most as extras who earned 75 cents an hour. About half of the filming for the movie took place in S arasota, northeast of the intersection of Fruitville and Beneva Roads. For approximately three months, the Big Top was filled with movie and circus equipment for the six weeks of actual filming and was closed to the public.

THE NAIL LAB—DOWNTOWN’S PREMIER

“An

affordable luxury”—that’s how Cynthia Acosta, owner of The Nail Lab, describes the pampering services she provides as the nail stylist in her own private suite inside Salon 41, located at 41 South Palm Avenue in downtown Sarasota. As a graduate of the Christine Valmy International School and Young Nails OWC, Cynthia is proud of the high-quality, personalized and upscale service she offers each and every client—all at an affordable price. Working one on one and preferably by appointment, Cynthia says, “I give each client my full attention to ensure that when they leave the salon, their nails are beautiful and in much b etter condition than when they came in. “The Nail Lab is not one of those establishments that slaps the p olish on and the client is in and out,” Cynthia adds. “I prefer to focus on quality rather than quantity to ensure that my clients receive a level of pampering they won’t find anywhere else.” Equally important in Cynthia’s work is the

exceptional quality of products she chooses for her c lients. “Many people do not realize that they are playing Russian roulette with their nails and their health when products of questionable quality are used for manicures and pedicures,” Cynthia says. “I use only the best—OPI, CND (Creative Nail Design), Young Nails and LCN, a brandnew pedicure line for people with extra-dry skin.” The Nail Lab at Salon 41 is the epitome of cleanliness, with everything in its place. Featuring one nail station and two pedicure chairs and dual, non-jetted bowls for couples, girlfriends and mothers and daughters who enjoy getting their “pedis” together, the suite is an oasis from the busy-ness of the day, a quiet spot to relax and enjoy the ultimate pampered experience. “From floor to ceiling, every square inch is thoroughly cleaned, sanitized and disinfected, and all nail files and buffers are used just once,” Cynthia says. What is it that inspired this enterprising woman with a business background to pursue a career as a nail stylist? “I simply love what I do,” Cynthia says with a smile. Born and raised in Little Italy in New York City, Cynthia graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree with honors in human relations before earning a master’s degree with honors in business management. Although she pursued a corporate career with J.P. Morgan in New York and Delaware for many years, it was Cynthia’s dissatisfaction with the nail services she personally received that eventually led her to become a nail stylist. “I frequented different salons in the Northeast and would find a salon that provided good customer service, but soso nail design, or vice versa,” Cynthia says. “It always has been my goal to provide excellence in both.” Since moving to Florida in October 2014, Cynthia has built a flourishing roster of clients at the nail suite in Salon 41, pictured at left.

DESTINATION FOR PAMPERED NAIL CARE What is most unique about The Nail Lab is that Cynthia also offers mobile spa services, not only for individual clients, but also for residents at area assisted living facilities, retirement homes and rehabilitation clinics. Can’t make it to the salon? No worries! For a reasonable mobile fee added to the same cost for services that clients pay at The Nail Lab, you can schedule a nail appointment at your home, hotel room or office—or any location that is convenient for you. “The mobile spa is virtually a ‘pop-up’ nail salon that can be set up anywhere,” Cynthia says. “In addition to a chair, table, pedicure bowl and foot rest, I bring all of the polishes and tools needed to create the ultimate nail care experience on site.” The “mobile spa” also makes house calls for special occasions, including bridal and baby showers; birthdays, anniversaries and other family celebrations; pageants, private events and more. Appointments for either the mobile service or at The Nail Lab are available seven days a week, including Sunday, and can be booked with Cynthia by calling 941-417-0809 or by visiting her website, www.thenailab.com. When asked what she enjoys most about her work, Cynthia says, “I love educating my clients about nail care, which really is a two-way street. Clients have to do their part to take care of their nails between appointments. “Nails are jewels, not tools,” she continues. “You just can’t put a key in your car and expect it to keep going; it needs regular maintenance. That same concept holds true for the upkeep of the nails on your fingers and toes.” Ongoing education also is paramount in perfecting Cynthia’s own skills. To keep current with all the newest trends in nail design, she participates in nail-training webinars five to six times a year and attends the three-day beauty show in Orlando each year, enrolling in multiple classes to learn

the latest techniques. Recent seminars have included the One Week Training Acrylics Class and the One Week Training Hard Gel Class, both hosted by Young Nails. Cynthia Acosta, owner of The Nail Lab In July, Cynthia will be taking an intensive, four-day Advanced Pedicure Class in order to earn her accreditation as a Certified Master Pedicurist. From nail lengths suitable for work to decorative designs with painted details and Swarovski rhinestones, Cynthia works diligently to master every technique. And, as part of her versatile offerings, she even has chocolate, m ango, peppermint and pumpkin manicures and pedicures available for her clients. “I absolutely love what I do,” Cynthia says. “I don’t come to work; instead, the time I spend with each client is more like a ‘play date.’ We talk, we laugh and we enjoy each other’s company. “But, educating my clients about the proper care needed to maintain the integrity of their nails always is of the utmost importance,” Cynthia says. “That is my passion.” The Nail Lab is located at Salon 41, 41 S. Palm Avenue in Sarasota. For more information or to book an appointment with Cynthia, call 941-417-0809, or visit www.thenailab.com.

The Curtain Closes on Dialogues on Diversity, but the Conversations are Ongoing By Special Contributor Nicole Clayton, Public Relations Associate, Florida Studio Theatre

T

his month marks the finale of the Dialogues on Diversity series presented by Florida State Theatre (FST). Through a series of panel discussions, FST actors and special guest speakers have invited audiences to listen and share their thoughts on the real world issues brought to center stage in multiple productions at FST. This community-wide conversation has cycled through multiple topics, including historical truths from the past, the cultural masks we all wear, the institutional control of thought, and even the moral citizenship that we all have a right to exercise—and a responsibility to recognize. “Florida Studio Theatre always has had panels and discussions that amplified the meanings of the plays,” said FST’s Associate Director Kate Alexander. “We have grown beyond ‘community engagement’ to what I call community ownership. By that, I mean that participating organizations can connect with a play and amplify their voice and, thus, reach their constituents in a whole new way. For example, we produced the play, ‘The Exonerated,’ and had impassioned discussions on the death penalty. When Public Defender Larry Eger says, ‘I can think of no other place to get my views across,’ he is saying that the theatre allows us to truly engage as citizens and organizations. “Chief Judge Charles E. Williams, Circuit Judge of the 12th Judicial Court, the Chair of the Steering Committee joined forces with FST on the play ‘Race by David Mamet,’” Alexander adds. “This play launched a city-wide effort that grew to include 45 community leaders and organizations with the discussions of race.” This season, there were multiple panel discussions to discuss past and present race issues, inspired by FST’s

Mainstage hit, “Butler,” the Stage III production of “My Name is Asher Lev” and the tale of “Alabama Story,” inspired by true events. According to Judge Williams, “The most difficult subject for people to talk about in this country is race. Yet as a country, race has defined us historically in the laws, including the Fugitive Slave Act, Jim Above, Catherine Randazzo, Jason Cannon, Shane Taylor, Crow laws, and the Supreme Dr. Brendan Goff & Chief Court in Brown v. Board of Judge Charles E. Williams at Education. It has shaped us a Dialogues in Diversity panel geographically—in having both discussion. Photo courtesy of free and slave states—and Florida Studio Theatre ultimately divided us as a nation through the Civil War. Those divides still seem to exist today.” Though the Dialogues on Diversity series will come to a close this month, it is definitely not the end of the conversation. At the finale event on May 23, members of the Steering Committee, panelists, actors and various community partners, including ABC 7, Embracing Our Differences, METV and more, will be in attendance. In addition to the fun and festivities, there will be a continued discussion of how the dialogues series has impacted each of their organizations. It is on this night that there will be a celebration of how far we have come, but also the acknowledgment of how these discussions will continue to impact our community and, most importantly, keep the conversation going.

Up, Up & Away! Dos & Don'ts for Safe Air Travel with Your Pets

T

hinking of jet setting ’cross the country with your pet in tow? You may be surprised to discover that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) recommends that pets should not be transported by airplane “unless absolutely necessary.” In recent years, there have been countless incidences in which pets have gone missing from airplanes or airports, or they have been exposed to extreme temperatures, inadequate ventilation and even rough handling when traveling in cargo, leading to injuries and fatalities. For brachycephalic breeds, including Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian cats, air travel can be extremely dangerous. According to HSUS, the short nasal airways characteristic of these breeds can easily lead to oxygen deprivation and heat stroke. If, however, air travel is a necessity, consider these lifesaving tips: • DO book a direct flight to your destination, whenever possible. One or more layovers during travel increase the time your pet must remain crated. • DON’T leave your pet’s travel arrangements until the last minute. It is critical to call the airline well before your day of departure to find out whether or not your pet can fly with you in the plane’s cabin and what restrictions you will have to consider. Airline representatives also will let you know what paperwork you must bring when traveling in flight with your pet. There also may be a limit on the number of animals that are allowed on each

flight, so be sure to book your reservations early, too. • DO schedule an appointment with your veterinarian prior to your trip. You will need a health certificate that is dated 10 days before your departure, as well as a copy of your pet’s immunization records. • DO contact your veterinarian at least six months in advance if you and your pet are traveling internationally. Certain countries require additional testing and certification of all animals before they are permitted to touch down on foreign soil. • DON’T assume that every airline accepts all pet carriers. Call the airline on which you have booked your flight in advance to get the exact specifications of the types of carriers they allow. • DON’T ignore the weather when traveling by air. Early morning and late evening flights are best during summer; afternoon flights are preferred during winter. • DO make sure that both your pet and his or her carrier are properly identified. Your name and contact information—including your cell phone number—should be on your pet’s tag, and firmly affixed to the carrier. Also, always include a large, “Live Animal” sticker on your pet’s crate for both cabin and cargo travel that will alert the airline personnel that an animal is on board. • DO tell flight attendants and the captain that you are traveling with your four-legged companion so that extra safety measures can be taken, if necessary. • DO ask airline personnel if you can watch your pet’s carrier being loaded and unloaded if he or she must travel in cargo. • DON’T feed your pet before flying. Experts recommend that you refrain from giving your pet a meal four to six hours before the flight to minimize stomach upset. • DO bring a current photo of your pet with you, in case he or she gets lost in transit. • DON’T travel by air with your pet during peak seasons, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. • DO take every precaution to make sure that your pet always is safe during air travel, and upon reaching your destination, give him or her a thorough examination to be certain he or she is not injured or shows any sign of illness. If you suspect that something is wrong, seek veterinary care immediately and get a date- and timestamped report from the veterinarian that describes your pet’s symptoms or injuries in detail. • DO consider boarding your pet at your veterinarian’s clinic or one of the excellent pet resorts in our community to avoid any of the mishaps that can occur when animals travel by air.
