WELCOME MEETING Every Friday • 11am Every Monday • 6pm Drop in and learn from cancer patients who have participated at Cancer Support Community about our philosophy and FREE programs. Adults with cancer, parents of adult children with cancer, their families & friends are invited to share their stories or just listen. No appointment necessary. However, you may attend all workshops, lectures, mind-body activities & networking groups before attending a Welcome Meeting.

WEEKLY WELLNESS GROUPS Ongoing support groups are facilitated by licensed psychotherapists for cancer patients & their loved ones. Family groups are for significant others, spouses, partners, adult children, parents, a close friend. One or more support persons may join a family group. Attendance at a Welcome Meeting is required prior to joining a weekly support group. We will sync our breath to movements in a meditative flow. Soul Motion With Cindy Kohlmiller Soul Motion is a movement program open to everyone regardless of physical ability, fitness or prior dance experience using mindfulness practice through the exploration of movement. WORKSHOPS & EVENTS Saturday, February 1 • 10 am – 12 Noon Thyroid Cancer – Surgery and Treatment: Dennis R. Maceri, MD with Keck Medical Center of USC. Dr. Maceri specializes in many areas of head and neck disorders. His current research is in thyroid cancer, specifically in the genetic changes responsible for tumor spread. Join ThyCa – South Bay Networking Group and their support persons. Registration encouraged. 1st Saturday, February 1 • 11 am - 12 pm Rhythm and Drumming: Nancy C. Rutherford The kids are doing it and now it’s time for the big kids (adults). Have fun with hand drums and rhythm instruments; absolutely no experience with drumming or any other musical instruments. This is about exploring our rhythms, playing together and fun. Instruments will be provided. Registration Requested Saturday, February 8 • 2 – 3:30pm Kid’s Community - Cartoon Storytelling with Christopher Kreidel Learn the basics of telling a story and creating cartoon artwork that illustrates the story. Write a story by choosing story elements, design the characters, draw the background, and create an animated flipbook. An ongoing monthly activity for children 5-17. Registration required. Monday, February 10 • 6 – 8:00pm San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium Update with Wade Smith, MD of Breastlink Learn about the 2013 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium held this past December. Please join us as we learn about new advances in treating breast cancer, lowering risk in high-risk women, radiation therapy benefits, and bio phosphates. Wednesday, February 12 • 5:30 - 7:00pm Urban Zen Workshop with Claudia Bumuller Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Workshop combines Restorative Yoga, Breath Work, Reiki and Therapeutic Essential Oils. The same is true for your money and how to pay for the cost of care beyond what your insurance may cover. This seminar will assist in planning how to meet your financial needs today, during your care and your goals for tomorrow, all while be assisted by Lisa Garey of Morgan Stanley with 18 years of experience in financial management. Tuesday, February 25 • 6:00 – 7:30 pm Yoga for Men with Michael Norder Join us for a workshop on what yoga is all about - just for men, by a man. You don’t need to be flexible to do yoga. We will work on breathing techniques, stamina, balance, courage, and strength. Wednesday, February 26 • 6:30 – 7:30 pm Hypnotherapy & Self-Hypnosis: A Tool for Achieving Your Goals with Robert Bier, MD Dr. Bier will help us learn how you can use self-hypnosis as a tool for achieving your goals. Robert Bier, MD is also a stand-up comic, Community Volunteer and retired radiologist. 1st Session of Eight on Side Effects: Friday, February 28 • 12:30 - 2 PM Side Effects Program: Oncology Massage with Alicia Hamner Alicia will discuss the importance of oncology massage and how it eases the side effects of cancer and its treatments. She will also talk about the importance of touch, definition of oncology massage, clinical considerations, importance of using oncology trained massage therapists, how to locate an oncology trained therapist. Alicia Hamner is a Certified Massage Therapist with a B.A. in Chinese Studies. Lunch will be provided by the world famous “SPOT” restaurant in Hermosa Beach.

Kid’s Community© is a free support program for children 5 – 12 who have a family member with cancer. The purpose of this group is to offer children an opportunity to make friends and learn new skills for living with the stresses of cancer, or when there is cancer in the family. In a small, supportive group setting, children will talk, learn, and grow together with other children living with cancer. They will have their questions about cancer answered, learn helpful ways to communicate with others and to ask for help, and learn some useful relaxation techniques. Preregistration Required.

As more people are diagnosed with cancer and they are surviving, one of the many post treatment issues cancer survivors must consider is taking care of their mouth, teeth and gums during and after treatment. Wednesday, March 5 & 19 • 4:30-6:30pm Dan Zenka: Overview of Prostate Cancer Dan is a prostate cancer survivor and former Senior VP of Communications of Prostate Cancer Foundation will present an overview of Prostate Cancer. 3rd Session of Eight on Side Effects: Friday, March 7 • 12:30-2:00pm Side Effects Program: Acupuncture with Michelle M Ching, MS, LAc, DiplOM Michelle M. Ching will offer some of the latest research on acupuncture and cancer care (addressing treatment induced nausea, fatigue and xerostomia). Her presentation will be followed by a discussion and instruction for point location and self-acupressure. Michelle Ching is a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) and nationally certified practitioner of Oriental Medicine (Dipl.O.M.) Lunch will be provided by the world famous “SPOT” restaurant in Hermosa Beach. 4th Session of Eight on Side Effects: Saturday, March 8 • 10:00am – 12:00pm Side Effects Program: Side Effects and Fatigue with Arash Asher, MD, Director of Cancer Survivorship & Rehabilitation at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute Dr. Asher will discuss post-treatment fatigue and the role rehabilitation can play on restoring maximal functional capacity and improving quality of life. Saturday, March 8 • 2 – 3:30 pm Kid’s Community – Animal Movements in Qi Gong Ancient qigong masters, through the study of nature and animals, observed how animals lived in harmony with nature. By copying the movements of certain animals, these masters laid the foundation of qigong. In this play activity, the children will be mimicking animal movements to perform qigong exercises for fun and health. Registration required. Dianne Staso, RD works at Beach Cities Center for Health and Fitness. She has a Masters in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from the University of Tennessee. Nutritious lunch provided by the world famous “SPOT” restaurant in Hermosa Beach. 8th Session of Eight on Side Effects: Saturday, March 22 • 10am – 12pm Wisdom of Your Inner Physician with Erin Sommerville Oncology Life Coach at Todd Cancer Institute Pavilion. As a cancer coach, Erin empowers patients to follow the unique wisdom of their own inner physician when making important decisions with their journey of getting well. Due to side-effects of treatment, listening to your inner physician may help you reduce pain, nausea, reduce stress/ anxiety, sleep better, boost your immune system, and recover faster. Joining a weekly group is strongly encouraged. Attendance at a Welcome Meeting is required before beginning counseling.
