t’s May again and as most of you already know, May is Cancer Awareness Month, and time for our Annual Cancer Society Gala Ball!! We are certainly fortunate to be here in May 2021. Around the world and here in The Bahamas, we have seen the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic - it has caused much suffering and death in many of our friends and family. It has limited all activity - work, travel, and socialization for over a year and it has severely impacted our economy. Last year, we were unable to have our Annual Ball due to the lockdown, protocols, and restrictions.

This year, we are still in the midst of the third wave of the pandemic. However, our hard-working and innovative Ball Committee has realized their brilliant concept of a Virtual Ball.

Over the last few years, natural disasters, hurricanes, and the coronavirus have devastated our fund-raising efforts. Unfortunately, cancer continues to ravage our people, now even more than ever. Non-communicable diseases which include cancers have seen increased numbers and the consequences are devastating psychologically and financially not just for the affected, their friends and family, but for the entire nation.

The Cancer Society remains committed to serve our community. Our Cancer Caring Centre remains open to our Family Islanders to come to stay while receiving much-needed treatment such as chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy as well as to undergo any further investigations. We have also been continuing to offer financial assistance and support to our cancer patients and their loved ones. Our monthly educational meetings are now via webinars which have even better attendance than when we had them in person. We are eager to resume our cervical and prostate screening and Family Island Mammogram Screening (FIMS) programs as soon as physical distancing and travel restrictions are lifted nationwide.

The Board of Directors, our staff, and volunteers will continue to strive and fulfill our Mission Statement to assist those afflicted with cancer in every way possible. Please continue to support our noble cause. May God bless you all and do enjoy our first ever Vintage Virtual Ball! Have lots of fun, gentle people!

espite our present environment and circumstances, these are indeed very exciting times for the Cancer Society of The Bahamas because the future challenges us to be creative, efficient, responsible and to be the best we can be. We are forced to think outside of the box and in some cases, think even bigger and better.

As we celebrate our Vintage Virtual Cancer Ball tonight under the theme, “The Good Ole Days” we are even more grateful to have been chosen by God and conduits of his love, keenly focused on creating awareness, education, prevention, advocacy, care and the inevitable cure of cancer.

Any success realized which cannot be measured by time or even how much money is raised must be manifested in our service to Cancer patients, survivors and their families and persons at risk across The Bahamas.

Brothers and sisters, we take this opportunity to ask you to join us in this fight. How? By taking charge of your health, get your cancer related check-ups, volunteer your time and resources and of course, keep us and those we serve in your prayers.

We say a special thanks and congratulations to our honorees, Commonwealth Bank and Mrs. Delores Farrington. We love you and we appreciate you for your invaluable support to the Cancer Society over the years.

We would be remised in our duties if we did not express special thanks to the ball committee for the precious time and energy you have given to ensure that this, our First Virtual Ball is a tremendous success.

We also want to send many thanks to Corporate Bahamas, family and friends and the public at large for your generous donations, whether it was purchasing a ticket or table, a cash donation, advertisements, or prizes.

Without your generous support there would be no ball. So, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

PROOF PROOF PROOF ay the work I do, speak for me! Almost two decades ago Atlantic Medical Insurance M Limited was approached to partner with the Cancer Society of The Bahamas. They accepted the clarion call and have been assisting to this present time, with staff support and financial contributions from the Annual Fun/Run Walk.

Mrs. Lynda Gibson, Executive Vice President, in her wisdom, seconded a few of her staff to assist with the Ball Committee. Some of the staff assisted for a while, but I, possibly beckoned by my passion to work and render services to others stayed the course….hence, I imagine the reason for this Susan G. Andrews Award tonight. I have been a member of the Ball Committee since 2002 and served as Co-Chair on several occasions. This experience has afforded me the opportunity to meet and assist so many wonderful people. It has also allowed me to be an ambassador for Atlantic Medical, engaging them to contribute to this most worthy and needed fundraising event for the Cancer Society of The Bahamas. I extend kudos and much gratitude to four amazing ladies from Atlantic Medical, the One-and Only Mrs. Lynda Gibson for bestowing upon me the honour to serve on the Ball Committee without boundaries. Ms. Stephanie Carroll, Mrs. Holly Ferguson and Mrs. Annastasia Francis for always supporting my efforts and assisting however possible. I will always treasure your mentorship, your assistance and support over the years.

I fondly recall the Committee’s many late-night meetings and calls, the disagreements and the ball bloopers. The reassuring phrase coined by Mrs. King “Are you feeling the Ball!” Through it all, I have been fortunate to witness first hand the fruits of the Ball Committee’s labour. The funds raised through the Ball have allowed the Cancer Society of The Bahamas to complete such projects as the Cancer Caring Centre, free screening in the Family Islands, such as Papsmears and breast examinations for women and prostate examination for men and many other outreach programs. I am humbled by being an award recipient, I encourage everyone here tonight to continue to give generously to the Cancer Society of The Bahamas as their work is on-going, and the donations are necessary to assist so many cancer patients in their time of need.

My late parents Ralph and Verdell Archer-Johnson would have been so proud of their daughter receiving such an honour, just because I was given an opportunity to lend a helping hand. As both of my parents were

PROOF PROOF PROOF educators, I was taught the importance of assisting others in any way I can without expecting anything in return. Since I am the eldest of eight children, leadership was thrusted upon me from an early age. Service to mankind brings me great joy and gratification. My parents instilled in their children the importance of giving back to country.

I am a proud graduate of St. Anne’s High School (Yes…Blue Waves), The College of The Bahamas and Nova Southeastern University. My academic qualifications include an Associate Degree in Marketing, Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, a Master of Science Degree in Human Resources and numerous insurance designations. I refer to myself as a veteran Insurance Professional, as I have been in the industry for over 40 years, spending the last quarter of a century with Atlantic Medical.

Additionally, I have served my country as a former board member of The Bahamas Mortgage Corporation and The Bridge Authority. As part of my civic duty to country, I also served as an advisor for Junior Achievement Bahamas. I have also served on a committee for The Bahamas Red Cross for several years during the 80’s. In 2019, I volunteered with the World’s Central Food Kitchen to assist the Hurricane Dorian Victims.

I am currently engaged in active ministry at Transfiguration Baptist Church, where I have served in the following capacities of, Past President of the Usher Board, Church Council, Sunday School Secretary and currently hold the position of Chairperson of the Pastor’s Anniversary Committee.

My life has been rewarding and well balanced! Although, I have lofty dreams and aspirations, I believe that my involvement with professional, civic and spiritual organizations, keep me grounded and can only further enhance my development both from a professional and personal standpoint. All of these experiences have allowed me to enjoy making a difference! In the meantime, I have made a lot of lasting friendships because of the Cancer Society, such that some of the patrons who support the ball each year would only purchase their tickets from me!

When I am not attending a meeting or planning a ball, I enjoy reading, travelling and baking (I make the best banana bread and pound cake). I have recently started my own backyard gardening (and would love to give you some Spanish Thyme). By the way, COVID-19 caught me all the way in Europe and it was quite an experience getting back home!

My greatest blessings call me wife, mummy and nana! I am fortunate to have an excellent support team, which includes my husband, (Robert), children, (Kristen & Krizia), grandchildren (Kriston & Kirsten) great siblings, good cousins, family, friends and colleagues. It never crossed my mind that I would be celebrated in this manner for doing something that I enjoy.

Tonight, I thank each of you for your love, support and friendship over the years, I am so happy that you can share in this celebration, let us continue to remember “The Good Old Days”. I thank my father for teaching me Leadership 101, and if he were alive tonight, despite Covid-19, he would have ensured all Cat Islanders would be in attendance by some means. Yes, they are daddy – if only, in heart!

Thank you, Atlantic Medical, fellow committee members including my special friend Mrs. Lovern Wildgoose, my dearest co-chair Mrs. Richenda King and the Board and Directors of The Cancer Society of The Bahamas for making this Cat Island girl feel extra special tonight. Life is truly GOOD; God is Gracious, let’s don’t forget The Good Old Days!

I am convinced that Goodness is Not Defined by the Outward Things We Do, but Who We Are Inside!!!

We reaffirm our support of this organization and its efforts. We stand with you as you continue to provide quality care, comfort and hope to patients throughout the length and breadth of our nation. We recognize the vital role that you play, in the positive social development of our country; and we applaud the commitment and conviction of your passionate advocates, in the war against cancer.
