equivalent of the Smurf. Unlike the Smurf movie, which took the wrong step placing the characters into the real world with awkward pop culture references, Trolls is set in a magical world, filled with inventiveness and creative flair. The textures of the characters and their world look like materials a child could use in a scrapbook: felt, hair and lot of glitter. The resilient Princess Poppy accompanies the grumpy realist/pessimist Branch (Justin Timberlake) on a rescue mission. Each balances the other out: the power of positive thinking versus the overzealous caution in a very turbulent time with very real and present dangers. Our little characters are so innocent in their incessant need to burst into song and hourly hugs that audiences will accept them despite themselves. Verdict: While not as heavy as the moral in Inside Out, the theme that happiness comes from within is welcome during this very commercial season. 4 stars. - Luke McWilliams
