Donations help Share the Dignity

The University of Canberra’s Dr Naomi Dale, Linda Kujala and Cindy Mitchell watched over the collection and helped deliver more than 50 pre-loved handbags for Share the Dignity.

University of Canberra staff joined other members of the Canberra community to offer pre-loved handbags to be given to women in need as part of a Share the Dignity appeal. The University community responded to the It’s In The Bag campaign, becoming a collection point and gathering 56 handbags in under a month to be provided to women who may be doing it tough in and around the ACT. Each bag was packed with items that would make a woman feel special and some even contained a thoughtful note to show its recipient that someone cares and that she matters. The University’s appeal was led by the Faculty of Business, Government and Law and was championed by assistant professor of management, Dr Naomi Dale. The bags were collected on Friday 2 December as the appeal ended. The donations are being checked over and will be provided to charities to distribute to women in need over the Christmas period.

Direct to Dubbo or Doha Air carrier FlyPelican is expanding their services with daily flights between Canberra and Dubbo to start on Monday 30 January. FlyPelican is a Newcastle-based independent regional airline and, according to CEO Paul Graham, FlyPelican “already have a strong presence in both Canberra and Dubbo with direct flights operating from Newcastle Airport”. “The objective was to ultimately continue and have a seamless service from Newcastle to Dubbo, and then through to Canberra at optimum morning and evening times.” The flights will be operating every weekday but there is potential to introduce a Sunday service if the demand is evident. Canberra Airport’s managing director Stephen Byron welcomed the announcement. “The one-hour service, at optimum flying times, opens the whole district west of Canberra to tourism and business,” Mr Byron said. “The service also has the capacity to introduce international passengers to Dubbo, Orange and beyond, through our Singapore Airlines service and direct flights on Qatar Airways from Doha later in 2017.”
