PICK OF THE WEEK Gone Girl Sunday, WIN, 9.50pm, MA15+ (2014) Based on the global bestseller by Gillian Flynn, this stylish creation from director David Fincher it unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage when, on his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Affleck) reports that his beautiful wife, Amy (Pike, above), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble and he soon becomes the prime suspect. This is an unmissable suburban noir.

Girl Asleep

The Long Kiss Goodnight Tuesday, 9GO!, 8.30pm, M (1996) Director Renny Harlin’s on-the-money thriller is a distinctly fresh entry into the action genre, featuring an awesome turn from Geena Davis (above) as an amnesiac teacher whose previous life as a professional assassin unexpectedly resurfaces. The casting of Samuel L. Jackson as her wisecracking foil provides continuously sharp dialogue and wit. It’s not often that you get to see a leather-clad, gun-toting, peroxide bombshell on one ice skate lecture a fag-puffing minor and cause him to wet his pants with fear.

Sunday, ABC, 10pm, M (2015) This surreal Aussie coming-ofage film with a 1970s aesthetic impressed critics on its tour of the festival circuit. The 14-goingon-15-year-old Greta (Bethany Whitmore, right) is having a hard enough time dealing with the awkwardness of life in her new school. Then her parents (Amber McMahon and Matthew Whittet) insist on throwing her a birthday party and inviting the whole class. The stress of it all becomes too much, and we follow her into the lavish fantasy world of her nightmarish dreams.
