CEO MESSAGE Dear Member I hope you’re enjoying another fabulous Canberra winter. We’re already looking forward to our annual Spring family fun day on the lawns of the Yacht Club on Sunday September 23rd. It’s a wonderful day with a host of free activities, prizes and giveaways. We’re delighted with the completion of the first stage of our Woden upgrade. The new dining and bar area will be known as Woden Central. From July we open the first section of Woden Central which includes the new Patio dining area and an all new kids games space. We’ll be serving up old favourites from the Golden Grille menu plus a new range of gourmet burgers. We’re also pleased to be offering wood fired pizzas to Members at Woden Central. Do come in and try the new menu in the amazing new surrounds. There’s also our usual array of great shows and dinners over the coming months which you can read more about in the following pages and book in venue, over the phone or online at cscc.com.au. A personal favourite is our Truffle dinners, at either Tuggeranong or Yacht Club. At Stellar there’s some good news on special deals to stay fit and healthy over winter. Whether its yoga at Unfolding Light, a float session at FloatAbove or trial offers at Stellar Swim or the gym, there’s an offer aimed at helping you stay well.
Our ‘Live your Dream’ program has provided once in a lifetime opportunities for some of our team. Read about the personal goals Brad and Ryan have been able to achieve on page 23 of your Members Magazine. Finally, whilst we are still in footy season, we were pleased to finalise in June a new 3 year sponsorship with Cricket ACT which includes naming rights to the Kookaburra Cup, an annual competition held in the ACT for kids aged 11 to 16. Your Club provides assistance to over 350 community groups across sport, welfare services, schools and charities. This breadth of community giving is something we know is important to our 83,000 members and we’ll keep telling you the stories of how we continue to help. In this edition of the magazine you can read about the work done by the Australian Breastfeeding Association. Woden Central Update Stage 1 of our Woden refurbishment is nearing completion with the opening of the new kitchen, the Patio, café and Henry’s play area scheduled for 9 July. The completion of this first stage will see the closure of the Southern Cross buffet and enable our team of chefs to start serving the new menu. “Members will enjoy our freshly made wood fired pizza, as well as some new additions to our gourmet burger range, like the maple bacon cheeseburger. And for our vegetarian customers, the twirled zucchini and sweet potato burger is sure to be a favourite,” said Executive Chef Chris Drover. The new café offers a selection of old favourites and some new items, including 4
a Reuben sandwich with corn beef, sauerkraut, pickles, swiss cheese and Russian dressing on light rye bread. The café has a number of new desserts too, including a macadamia and salted caramel torte, and will be home to 18 flavours of delicious handmade Bermagui Gelati Clinic Gelati – making for a tasty afternoon treat, or a lovely finish to your meal. The all new Henry’s kids play area will feature a range of arcade games operated by swipe cards, eliminating the need for tokens. The soft play area will also make a welcome return to the new space. “This is a very exciting time” said Woden General Manager Matt Walshe, who has been overseeing the refurbishment.

“We’ve been planning this for four years, so it’s wonderful to see it come together. I know that members will enjoy the new spaces we’ve created, and appreciate seeing the nostalgic elements we have retained.”
said Matt, “so we’ve also installed two screens in the community lounge to ensure there are extra spaces to watch the footy.” Throughout stage 2, the Top of the Grille restaurant will continue to trade seven nights per week on level 1 of the Club.
Stage 2 kicks off in July and will see the closure of the front section of the venue whilst we build the new Clubhouse and Bar. Throughout Stage 2, a temporary bar will operate at the base of the stairs between the TAB and the community lounge, offering Great Northern and Carlton Draught on tap, along with a range of wine, spirits and packaged beers. “We know how popular watching all the live sporting action is to many of our members,”

Paddock to Plate: Truffles With the winter cold comes the black gold! Canberra is lucky to be situated in the right climate to grow world class truffles, and much to the pleasure of our palates, our Executive Chefs are also fond of this delicacy.
Over the last four years, the Club has had the privilege of working with Jayson Mesman, owner of The Truffle Farm on Mt Majura Road, as host of many of our dinners dedicated to the history and flavours of this prized fungi. “The produce from our local regions is fantastic, and it supports the local economy,” said Executive Chef Anurag Gautam. “It’s a big plus if the money we spend sourcing high quality produce stays in the local community, and it’s also environmentally sound. We know that local farmers like Jayson put their heart and soul into their produce and we want to support them.” Throughout the cooler months, our Tuggeranong and Yacht Club venues have hosted a number of dinners and there are another two still to come. Tuggeranong’s dinner on Thursday 26 July is part of their French series, and focusses on the style of cuisine found in the Perigord region of France. The Yacht Club’s truffle dinner will be held the following day on Friday 27 July, and will showcase a contemporary interpretation of the unique earthy flavours. Capital Rehabiliation Professionals On 7 May, the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) released a statement in the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) that best practice cancer care is to include a referral to an Exercise Physiologist. Dr Prue Comrie, representing Australia's professional peak body, viewed this as a major breakthrough worldwide, calling for exercise to be prescribed to all cancer patients as a standard part of the treatment plan. Exercise has been proven to help people tolerate aggressive cancer treatments and improve quality of life, while enhancing physical and mental wellbeing.

Community: Australian Breastfeeding Association The Australian Breastfeeding Association, Lake George Region, is one of the many groups supported by the Club’s Community Rewards program. On 7 May, we were privileged to host a morning tea at our Jamison venue to celebrate National Mothering Week. For more than 50 years, the Australian Breastfeeding Association has provided mother-to-mother support to encourage, inform and emotionally connect with mothers on their breastfeeding journeys. “Women nourishing other women, emotionally and practically, is what lies at the heart of genuine mother-to-mother support,” says Dr Alex Smith, an academic with a keen interest in the anthropological aspects of mothering. 22
The original band of volunteers in the Australian Breastfeeding Association have been joined by their daughters, now with their own children, who want to help just like their mothers did, and are making a huge difference in the lives of mothers in Canberra and surrounding areas. Mothers and daughters providing mother-to-mother support together is an amazing testament to mothering through the generations.

Earlier this year, he had the privilege to complete an internship in London as part of the Club’s ‘Live your Dream’ staff program. We asked Brad to share some insights about his experience. Members Mag: First up, where did you go? Brad Howden: I completed an internship at ‘Dinner by Heston Blumenthal’ in central London. It is a 2 star Michelin restaurant, ranked in the top 50 restaurants in the world in 2017. M: Why did you pick that restaurant? B: I wanted to experience a whole different way of cooking. I have been a fan of Heston from an early age – his imagination and creativity makes him so unique, and above a lot of the most talented chefs in the world. M: What sorts of dishes were you preparing?
B: The philosophy of the restaurant was to bring the old English and British foods back, but present those foods in a modern and creative way. M: What was the best part of your trip? B: The best part was definitely learning and meeting some of the most brilliant chefs this industry has to offer. These chefs had the most amazing knowledge and were very passionate in what they were doing. M: What was the most interesting part of your experience? B: The most interesting thing I found was how hands on and labour intensive it is. There was at least sixty chefs in the restaurant and all had a very demanding role in each of their sections. It was an incredible experience, and thank you to the CSCC for their support, as if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be where I am today.
