Dear Member

I write to you having just returned from a short trip overseas. While the holiday destination was exotic, the sense of happiness in coming home to Canberra was strong. We are so lucky to live in such a welcoming city that has such a strong sense of community; felt no more so than at Christmas time. All our venues will be open for lunch on Christmas Day, although you do need to pre-book. Snapper on the Lake will also open from 11am to 3pm and no booking is required if you want to grab some fresh fish and chips or a coffee, cake or ice cream. All the details of Christmas Day opening hours can be found on page 5 of your Members Magazine. Our very creative team has also developed a list of Christmas gift ideas you can order from the Club this year. This includes Grant Burge wines, plus the fabulous Canberra Secrets book to help you discover the hidden gems of Canberra, which is a great help if you’ve got visitors from interstate or overseas coming for the holidays. There’s also gift cards for pampering at FloatAbove, or for food, beverages and shows across Southern Cross Club venues, and gym membership gift cards for Stellar. Perhaps best of all is the chance to pre-order a Christmas ham with Chef Anurag’s special Orange and Five Spice glaze! Find out how to order on page 4 of the magazine. The marketing team has produced ten wonderful videos of our partnerships in the community. These are being released weekly on our website and on Facebook, and includes

Woden Youth Centre, Vinnies Night Patrol and Tuggeranong Hawks Football Club. I urge you to go online and take a look at these videos as they tell a great story of how your Club gives back to the Canberra community. There’s more news on our community groups in the ‘News Around our Community’ section of the magazine on pages 14 and 15. One of our favourite events at this time of year is the annual Carols by Candlelight at Stage 88, presented by Woden Valley Youth Choir. As a long term partner in the event, we’ll be offering the chance to pre-order hampers, as well as offering hot food and cold drinks at the event for the first time. Summer is a perfect time to take a cruise on the MV Southern Cross. We’ve started promoting our daily sightseeing tours internationally with help from the Australian Tourism Export Council and Visit Canberra. The Sunday lunch and Thursday dinner cruises are also well worth doing as a special treat with family and friends. Finally, wherever and however you celebrate this festive and holiday season, I hope you have a merry, safe and relaxing time. Regards

Welcome aboard

the MV Southern Cross

Lake Burley Griffin is at the heart of Canberra, surrounded by some of our most famous institutions, picturesque parks, nature reserves and gardens, and yet all many of us ever see is a passing glimpse of the water as we drive over one of the bridges, or along one of the main roads. This summer is the time to change that. The MV Southern Cross provides the perfect opportunity to explore Canberra from the lake itself. If you have interstate or overseas visitors, treat them to a daily sightseeing cruise on board the MV Southern Cross. You can relax in air conditioned comfort and enjoy the informative commentary from our experienced skippers. It’s a fun way to see the sights and learn more about the city. The tour departs from 10am daily and features three convenient pick up points 8

around the lake. After the 90 minute cruise, guests are dropped off at one of the same three points. If you already know all there is to know about Canberra, a lunch or dinner cruise might be more your style. Our cruise menus feature local ingredients, and when combined with the wonderful views of Lake Burley Griffin, our Sunday lunch and Thursday dinner cruises are the ultimate lake experience. They make a perfect treat for celebrating a special occasion or providing something unique for your visitors to Canberra. The MV Southern Cross also has regular themed dinners including Christmas, New Year, Australia Day and Skyfire, so make sure you visit mvsoutherncross.com.au for more information and bookings.

Members' Pricing

now at the Yacht Club

There’s a new reason to enjoy being a member of the Southern Cross Club, with the introduction of members pricing at the Southern Cross Yacht Club. Members will now be able to save around 20% on all food in the Yacht Club restaurant and lounge areas. This change coincides with the introduction of a wonderful new summer menu which focuses on fresh seasonal produce. “I like the food I cook to tell a story,” said Executive Chef Anil Kapoor. “By sourcing the freshest ingredients, I can let the flavours speak for themselves. We're lucky to have some great produce in Australia, and I want the people of Canberra to experience it for themselves.”

This philosophy has led to the development of the 200 Mile Menu, which features a selection of dishes comprised of ingredients predominantly sourced from within 200 miles of Canberra. “The Canberra region has some wonderful artisan farmers and producers and we are proud to be able to showcase some of its best,” said Yacht Club General Manager Jason Lowe. “Match this with a local wine and you can’t go wrong.”

View the menu online at cscc.com.au, or visit the Yacht Club on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

English Conversation It’s Wednesday morning and from deep inside the walls of the Canberra Southern Cross Club, a constant chatter can be heard in varying accents. Some are Asian voices, some are European and others have a Middle Eastern inflection. For more than 30 years, the English Conversation Group has been equipping non-English speaking, new Canberrans with the confidence to speak the language of their new home. Vinnies Christmas Giving Tree All Southern Cross Club venues are part of the Vinnies Christmas Appeal again this year. When you visit the Club from 1 to 20 December, please bring some non-perishable food or age appropriate gifts to put under the tree to help some of Canberra’s most vulnerable people have a merry Christmas. Giving trees are located at Woden Tuggeranong, Jamison, Stellar, and the Yacht Club.

Possums Playschool, Spence Thanks to the Community Grants program, Possums Playschool in Spence was recently able to restore the play structure in their playschool yard. The hill was eroding due to high use from the children, with past attempts at restoring it having failed. The grant from the Club allowed them to install synthetic grass over the hill. What was once an embarrassing eyesore has now been turned into the ‘hero piece’ of the yard. The children can’t get enough of it and are all over it, all of the time!

Before

Community Giving Event On 24 October, the Club celebrated the many wonderful community groups who are part of our Southern Cross family. Representatives of the 350 groups were present at the event, which also featured a presentation by Hayden Page from the Woden Youth Centre, and a wonderful performance from the Canberra Mens Choir. To everyone who volunteers with a local community group, thank you for everything that you do. Canberra would not be the same without you.

Staffing changes at the Club With the ever changing nature of Clubs and our diversification into new community related activities, we’ve taken the opportunity to reward a number of key staff with new challenges. • Lance Prior will become the General Manager of Health and Wellness, which now forms a significant part of the Southern Cross Club’s focus. Lance will manage all the teams at Stellar Canberra as well as our Anytime Fitness teams, plus new opportunities in the health, recreation and wellness market which we are looking closely into. Lance takes over the management of Stellar from Simon Plummer who regrettably is leaving us in late December. Simon has bought a new 4 wheel drive and campervan – but we’re sure he’ll never be a stranger to the Club! •

Matt Walshe, our long serving Woden General Manager, who brought up 25 years’ service this year, will take on the overall responsibility for Venue facilities and maintenance, to help ensure all our Venues are well presented and maintained in good condition. Oscar Ferreira has been promoted to the role of Venue Manager at Woden.

• Our fabulous Executive Chef Anurag Gautam has been appointed General Manager of Food and Beverage, assisting all our kitchen and service teams with training expertise, product knowledge and the sourcing of great local produce. • Huw Bennett, currently our Tuggeranong manager, moves into the role of General Manager Gaming. Jason Lowe, currently at Yacht Club, will move into the role of Venue Manager at Tuggeranong. • Clare Williams has been promoted to General Manager Marketing, joining Cerasela Muller (General Manager HR) as women in our Senior Executive team. CEO Ian Mackay said of the changes, “We have a great team of people and these appointments are well deserved given the achievements these staff have made over the past three years. They will help ensure the Canberra Southern Cross Club stays strong and relevant to our community into the future.”
