Members will also enjoy the return of our ‘Everyone’s a Winner’ promotion, so make sure you visit Woden, Tuggeranong or Jamison during October to claim your prize. As the weather gets warmer, there’s plenty of activity at your Club. With our annual Family Day on the lawns of the Yacht Club in September, Melbourne Cup day and Christmas, plus a great range of dinners and shows including Boney M, Smash Mouth and for the kids, the Lah-Lah Christmas Spectacular will delight. On page 10, you’ll find a Stellar array of offers available that will help you on your health journey, including a free trial at Stellar Swim, a great deal on personal training, and a free float with a friend. Our staff are continuing to live their dreams, with the 2018 winners announced, and a wrap up of Ryan’s cycle through the mountains of France. You can also read about the wonderful work that our Community Rewards group, OzHarvest is doing in our local area on page 22. Also of note, is Parma for a Farmer which has been running throughout August and ends 30 September. At the time of print, thanks to those who’ve purchased Parmas, we’ve already raised over $1,500 which will be donated to the Canberra Hay Runners to support the producers in our local region. In early September, we are also sending a team of ten staff, including our Executive Chefs and key Front of House personnel to visit the farmers that supply our meats. Our staff will see first-hand what impact the drought is having on our farmers. It will also be valuable for them to personally experience the passion and effort that our farmers put into their livestock, so staff have a better understanding of where our produce comes from.

WODEN CENTRAL
A new dining destination in the heart of Woden Woden Central has been a long time in the making, so we are excited to finally reveal the finished dining space to you. We have designed and created several distinct spaces, making Woden Central an exceptional dining destination.
We also welcome the return of our family dining space, Henry’s. With easy visibility from the dining area into the play rooms, parents will be able to watch their children as they enjoy the arcade games and soft play area.
With comfortable spaces that cater to a range of needs from your morning coffee and cake at the café, to a hassle free dinner with family and friends in Henry’s. Enjoy a date night in the Patio with table service, or meet some friends for casual after work drinks and dining over a game of pool in the Clubhouse and Bar.
The new spaces also come with our new Woden Central menu, with a focus on contemporary flavours. “We’ve already received a lot of great feedback from members about our new menu,” said Executive Chef Nick Wren. “Members are especially enjoying our woodfired pizza, as well as the old favourites, served in a new way.”
The Patio The Patio has already received a warm welcome since opening in early July as part of our Stage 1 renovations. The light filled space is the perfect place for an intimate dinner, with a range of nooks and booth seating available. With plenty of lush greenery throughout The Patio, and the availability of table service during the evening, it’s the perfect option for those who want a more formal dining experience, stepping away from the hustle and bustle of the busy kitchen and café. As with all the Woden Central menus, the Patio menu emphasises fresh, quality produce.
Henry’s Family Dining The new playspace entrance creates a fun atmosphere and focal point within the dining space.
and tasty treats, and caters for a range of allergies and intolerances to help you enjoy a meal out as a family.
The soft play area will continue to be a favourite spot within Henry’s and is easily visible from the Family Dining area. There is also a great new range of arcade games for the older kids to enjoy.
The grown ups are also in for a treat, with the new Family Dining menu offering a range of woodfired pizzas made with our special Woden Central dough, as well as some new gourmet burgers, plus many of the old favourites from the Golden Grille.
Our Henry’s kids menu will continue to provide a balance between healthy, nutritiously balanced meals 6
WODEN CENTRAL
The Clubhouse and Bar The latest Woden Central space to open is the Clubhouse and Bar, featuring a new beverage list including wine on tap and craft beers, and a new casual dining menu centred around woodfired pizza and our gourmet burger range. The Clubhouse features a range of different dining spaces designed to ensure you and your friends can enjoy a great evening out. From cosy couches around the fireplace, to raised bench seating, plus plenty of large screens for the sports enthusiasts. “The Clubhouse is the newest feature of our dining destination,” said Woden General Manager Matt Walshe. “We’ve designed this space to cater for a wide range of members and their friends. From a relaxing drink after work, to watching the footy, the new Clubhouse is the place to be.” “Our new bar features some exciting new lines such as the Margarita cocktails on tap, or for the beer enthusiasts, 4 Pines Kolsch and Amber Ale start our great collection of craft beers.” “We have also developed a great share platter menu,” added Matt. “From our special Salt and Pepper Squid to the Roasted Vegetable Antipasto Platter, we like to ensure there is something that everyone will enjoy.”

Learning to Swim
Enrol now to take advantage of your free trial offer!
Members Magazine sat down with Michael Gillard, the Pool Manager at Stellar Swim, to find out more about the benefits that come with learning to swim. Why should I put my child in swimming lessons? Learning to swim is a life skill – once your child learns how to swim they will never forget. Safety around water is paramount, and with the number of pools, beaches, and waterways in Australia the importance of learning to swim through effective swimming lessons cannot be understated. When should I start my child's swimming lessons? It’s generally recommended that infants should start water familiarisation sessions from 3 months of age. This gives your little one time to allow their immune system to develop, and bond with you to build trust before going into the water. My child is a little older, is it too late for them to learn to swim? It’s never too late to learn to swim. Our lessons at Stellar Swim are based on a child’s ability, not their age, so no matter when your child learns to swim we have a class that will cater to their needs.
What makes Stellar Swim stand out from the rest? Our facilities are purpose designed. and built for our programs. We offer small class sizes, as well as make up lessons, an you can even add to your regular lessons with our school holiday intensive programs. When can I enrol my child in swim lessons? Unlike other swim schools, we don’t run on terms at Stellar Swim. This gives a lot more flexibility instead of being locked in for 10 or 12 weeks. At Stellar Swim, we run with ongoing classes, this means you can book in at any time, without waiting for a new term to start. Are there any shortcuts to learning to swim faster? Regular attendance each week is the best thing for helping your child to swim faster, even over Winter. Our pool is heated to 32° all year round, and continuing lessons over the colder months will give your child a boost when Summer comes around.

OzHarvest: Nourishing Canberra One of the groups you can support through our Community Rewards Program is OzHarvest Canberra, a non-profit organisation that collects quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivers it directly to over 60 local charities supporting people in need across Canberra and surrounding areas.
“We are finding there are more and more families who have to make the awful decision to choose between heating their homes or eating good food. Canberra Southern Cross Club’s support through the Community Rewards Program has meant many of these families can now have a good meal while retaining their dignity and quality of life.”
To date, the Community Rewards Program has enabled the OzHarvest Canbera team to rescue around 20,000 meals for refuges, homelessness services, and emergency relief food pantries across the territory. The rescued food is nutritious and fresh, and it makes a huge difference to many families and individuals finding the going tough.
Founded in 2004 by Ronni Kahn after noticing the huge volume of good food going to waste from the hospitality industry, so she decided there had to be a better way. OzHarvest now operates nationally, rescuing over 100 tonnes of food each week from over 3,000 food donors.
“Our team rescues an average of 45,000 kilograms of fruit and veggies, meat and dairy products every month, and the Southern Cross Club’s support has played a big part in keeping us on the road and assisting people in need,” says Dave Burnet, OzHarvest ACT and Territories Manager.

LIVE YOUR DREAM
Living Their Dreams Last year, our annual employee program, Live your Dream, saw staff members enjoy a wide range of experiences, from cooking in the kitchen of Hester Blumenthal, to cycling the iconic Alps of the Tour de France. Following on from the success of its inaugural year, we have four new winners who will share in $20,000 to live their dream. Greg Chamberlain’s dream is to excel in Olympic weightlifting. He will undertake 6 months of training with world class weightlifter Kylie Lindbeck, who competed in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Oliver Campbell has a dream to get married! He has been with his partner Shawn Tessa for 7 years and they’ve had two beautiful kids together, but they’ve
never found the time to tie the knot. Our fabulous events team looks forward to working with you to plan and host your perfect wedding day. Nick Percival is an out and out rev head! Nick picked up a 1965 Pontiac as a ‘rust bucket’ and his dream is to get the car done up to the point he can enter it into the Summernats festival. Demi Smith and Emma Turton are shared winners, with a dream to be part of a volunteer outreach program in a developing country. Best wishes to our four Live Your Dream winners, and we look forward to sharing updates about the fulfilment of your dreams!
Ryan Lives His Cycling Dream Ryan’s recent cycling adventure in the French Alps, while very challenging, was extremely rewarding, and included scaling fourteen mountains that feature in the Tour de France. That’s a total of 20,000 metres of vertical climbing – which is 2.5 times the height of Mount Everest at 8,848 metres. “The Live Your Dream program is an excellent opportunity for Southern Cross Club staff to achieve or complete their dream, and thanks again for this great opportunity,” said Ryan. 21
