CGS BOARDING 2019 & BEYOND

–Campus Development Plan

THE FUTURE OF CGS BOARDING

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL I am delighted to announce that from the start of Term 1 in 2019, Canberra Grammar School will open the first stage of its brand new purpose-built boarding accommodation on the School’s magnificent campus. This makes possible the next phase of the School’s transition to full co-education and opens boarding for girls in Years 7 to 12 from 2019 onwards. It also enhances the School’s historic commitment to boarding for regional and rural families, for Canberra-based families on remote postings and for international students. As a major component of the School’s new Campus Development Plan, construction of the first 28 rooms for girls and adjoining staff accommodation will begin in mid-2018 on the site of the School’s current tennis courts on Golden Grove. Further accommodation for girls and boys will follow in stages over subsequent years. The tennis courts will also be relocated as part of the Campus Development Plan.

Once complete, the School’s new boarding village will replace the existing 1960s dormitories and will provide both flexible and long-stay boarding accommodation with individual rooms for around 150 boys and girls from Year 7 to Year 12 in high-quality, comfortable and modern facilities. The new complex will surround a large private courtyard, and will include a spacious indoor social and gathering area, as well as reception, laundry, self-catering and storage facilities. Since its earliest days, boarding has always been central to the life of Canberra Grammar School. We are excited by these plans to enhance its future for boys and girls, and we are proud to reaffirm its vital and flourishing place in our community. Justin Garrick Head of School

GIRLS’ BOARDING FROM 2019 ONWARDS

From the start of Term 1 2019, Canberra Grammar School is pleased to extend its commitment to full co-education to the life of its boarding community. We welcome applications from girls seeking to enter boarding in Years 7 to 12 for the first 28 single rooms, with further girls’ accommodation to follow in subsequent stages of development. The initial accommodation units will be built on the site of the School’s current tennis courts fronting on to Golden Grove, and will include social space as well as private apartments for residential staff. In 2019, girls will join the boarding community of Manaro House, with specialist residential and developmental care provided by the Head of Boarding and a dedicated Assistant Head of Boarding for girls, who will be appointed during 2018, along with a team of residential and non-residential support staff.

BOYS’ BOARDING FROM 2019 ONWARDS

The School reaffirms its deep commitment to boys’ boarding. As always, we welcome applications from boys seeking to enter boarding in Years 7 to 12 in 2019 in order to maintain our strong community of boy boarders. In the initial stages of boarding renewal, boys will remain in the current accommodation, which was extensively renovated and modernised in 2012. Over time, boys will move to new facilities as they are constructed within the new boarding precinct. In the meantime, the School is committed to maintaining current facilities to a high standard and to making a number of interim improvements. In 2019, boys will join or remain in the community of Manaro House under the care of the Head of Boarding and the Assistant Head of Boarding for boys, along with their team of residential and non-residential support staff.

STUDENT CARE & DEVELOPMENT We are excited by the quality of our accommodation plans, but we know that the standard of care in boarding is paramount. That care occurs in two distinct, yet integrated, forms: • Residential care, providing the best possible specialist and personal attention to the needs of young men and women living away from their family homes; and • Developmental care under the social and educational programmes of the School’s renowned pastoral House system. At present, both forms of care are provided within the community of Manaro House. That will remain the case in the early stages of boarding redevelopment, with girls joining boys in Manaro House, albeit in separate accommodation. In due course, however, as the number of boys and girls in boarding grows, our boarding care will evolve to a new model, with Boarders receiving specialist residential care while also joining the School’s pastoral houses on the same basis as all others students. In other words, Boarders will be cared for in the equivalent of their ‘home lives’ by specialist residential staff, whose prime focus will be their care and wellbeing at nights and on weekends, as well their general and personal needs, for instance in regard to medical visits and appointments, or transport and travel arrangements. These staff will also lead a rich programme of activities in the evenings and on weekends, giving Boarders access to academic support, sports and the arts, as well as social and leisure opportunities. At the same time, Boarders will be cared for in the daily life of the School on the same terms as other students as an integral part of the School’s extensive pastoral House system. In this context, they will attend tutorials, assembly, House meetings and chapel, under the care of a Head of Student House and staff tutors who will monitor and guide their academic progress, provide advice on curricular and co-curricular choices and address important topics related to social and personal development.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES Accommodation in the new boarding facilities will be in units of up to seven single rooms clustered around a shared relaxation room and bathroom, with accessible rooms for students with specific mobility requirements distributed throughout the complex. All units will be single-gendered and all buildings have been designed to provide privacy as well as the capacity to secure each level and block for safety and to prevent unauthorised access or egress. Staff apartments will be distributed throughout the complex to provide close supervision and support. Accommodation in the existing boarding facilities will remain as set during the major renovations of 2012, with single rooms for senior students and double rooms for junior students along with shared work areas, bathrooms and staff apartments on each floor. While working towards creation of the new boarding complex over the years ahead, the School remains committed to maintaining the standard of the existing facilities and to making interim improvements to the buildings commensurate to their remaining lifespan.
