top of his game!

AS the temperatures soared here in Tenerife so did the emotion in Sapri, Italy, for the latest IBFA event, with Tenerife businessman and body-builder Chris Penney ecstatic with his latest achievements winning both the Mr. Universe and Mr. Europe titles. When we last spoke to Chris back in May he firmly had his sights on winning the IBFA Mr. Universe competition from the 6th -8th July and that’s what he well and truly did. He told Canarian Weekly: “It’s really only just sinking in”. He made the onerous journey to Sapri a small town in the Campania region of Italy right on the south western tip; where the whole population of just over 7,000 come to a halt to support the event. Sapri’s not an easy

place to get to from Tenerife, after a 3am start on planes, trains and automobiles Chris eventually reached the

town on the Cilentan coast at 6pm. Over 250 competitors, more than usual were going through their

paces. The reason for the increased number is that on the preceding Saturday the Mr. Italy competition had also been held. In high humidity, at 02.30am Chris was announced as the winner of Mr. Universe, senior heavyweight cat-

egory, an outstanding achievement when you consider that he’s competing against guys who are nearly half is age. Chris’s trainer Jose advised him to compete in this class because of his excellent conditioning and vascularity. The win in

the heavyweight category qualified Chris for the overall Mr Universe title (see pic alongside the lightweight and middleweight champions). This was the finale of the show which concluded at 03.30am. A long but successful day.
