The Evolution of Home

Designed for How We Live Today

When we think about home, we think about change. How our lives shift, how our spaces need to adapt, how comfort can take on new meaning over time. As fourth-generation custodians of Elte, we’ve had a front-row seat to how design evolves, not just in style, but in purpose. Mkt was born from that perspective: a reflection of how we live now. It’s a space where thoughtful design meets everyday life. Where pieces are meant to be lived with, not just looked at. And where we continue to learn, explore, and grow, just like the people who walk through our doors. We’re so glad you’re here.

Old Meets New

The story behind Mkt’s rug-making: rooted in tradition, made for modern living.

At Mkt, every rug begins with a belief in craftsmanship. While the design perspective is contemporary, the techniques behind each piece are centuries old.

All of Mkt’s rugs are hand-knotted in India using artisanal knowledge passed down through generations. The work is done in Bhadohi, a northern town known as India’s “carpet city,” where rug weaving has been practised since the 16th century.

“The artisans in Bhadohi have passed down the art of weaving for hundreds of years,” says Jamie Metrick, Co-founder and Mkt rug buyer.

Jamie’s connection to India runs deep. Mkt is a sister brand to Elte, the family-run design company his great-grandfather founded in 1919. For nearly a century, Elte has worked directly with rug makers in Bhadohi, and it is this same foundation that Mkt builds upon today.

“I’ve been travelling to Bhadohi for nearly 20 years,” Jamie explains. “My father went before me, and my grandfather and grandmother before him. The relationships we’ve built with the makers there are incredibly special.”

The process behind each rug remains deeply rooted in tradition. Mkt rugs are knotted by hand, washed, and hand finished, one section at a time, until the final pattern is revealed.

“The designs have evolved over the years,” Jamie says, “but the age-old process and quality remain constant.”

In every Mkt rug, there is a story of time, tradition, and touch. A throughline of craftsmanship that connects the past to the present – and one that we are proud to carry forward.
