Forklift Tires Need Special Care in Winters- Why and How? At the advent of winters, we all get set to prepare our cars for the rough weather ahead. Well, forklifts are no different. They need special winter care too. Especially the rubber components like your forklift tires. An operator must understand that forklifts also need regular maintenance and care like any other vehicle to ensure their long life. The first component we have to take care of is tires. Forklift tires need special winter care so that they can bear the harshness winter brings along. In this blog, we’ll discuss what you need to do to make sure your forklift tires are winter ready and totally prepped to face winter adversities.
Keep an eye on Tire Pressure If an operator is not checking air pressure before working, he/she is missing out on a very important inspection regime. Checking forklift tires is vital before every operation or at least once a day in case your machine is sitting idle. Checking tire pressure is very important for safety of operator and also for economical purposes. If the tire pressure is less, that will cause an increase in rolling resistance which leads to more fuel consumption than necessary. Thus, less economical. If tire pressure is optimal, there is minimal rolling resistance and fuel consumption is comparatively less. Given the winter scenario where fuel consumption is automatically higher than summers, this is a welcome practice. Also, a low tire pressure does not offer better traction which leads to accidents over slippery snow laden paths. On the other hand, an overinflated tire may lead to tire bursting while machine is in operation due to increased temperature and subsequent expansion of air. This is also a
dangerous scenario. So, a proper knowledge of right air pressure according to different seasons is very important. Air pressure is kept slightly lower than normal in summers due to air expansion and slightly higher in winters due to air compression. Tire Accessories For Winters Even if you check air pressure properly before every use and take all necessary precautions to reduce damage to tires, they still take a beating in the harsh salt-slush, snow and ice laden terrains. Therefore, you may need to go a step further and implement some protective measures in the form of some tools you can use. Such one tool is tire chains. Tire chains not only minimize wear and tear of tires but also help attain better mobility on snow laden slippery roads. There are no slips or slides with tire chains. You can use them throughout the period of snowfall. Avoid using them on otherwise plain, normal, snowless terrains as chains may get damaged due to increased friction. If you be careful with these tools, you can yield better results for your corporation.
