Physio therapist signs with pro team When Life hands you lemons, well, make the best lemonade you can. That's the position in which Jan Beran, physiotherapist for the Junior A Kodiaks, found himself this summer. Scheduled for surgery in the country of his birth, Jan and his family travelled home to Czech Republic in June of this year. However, after recovering from the surgery, his Canadian work permit was nearing an end, so he found himself stuck there. “It's been stressful” says Beran. “As Canada immigration couldn't give us any kind of commitment regarding when the work visa would be issued, all we could do was wait.” Waiting was wearing on Jan, who is used to holding down more than one job working with athletes around Camrose. “I had been kept pretty busy,” Jan laughs. “Especially when the Vikings' season would start.” So it comes as little surprise to have Jan snapped up by a professional hockey team in Slovakia. “They understand that it is just temporary,” Jan assures us. “But they were a new team to their league this year, so the position of team physiotherapist was open.” His temporary employer is Lev Poprad, a professional team whose name means “Lion of Poprad” in English. Lev Poprad is also displaced from its roots, as the new Slovakian Hockey Federation team now plays 400 km from its previous rink in Prague. “They had to move countries to get accepted into this Pro league” explains Beran. “So it has been a long journey for them as well.” While Jan is absent from his post as resident sports expert at Battle River Physical Therapy, the University teams are gearing up for the upcoming season. Being without Jan for a month or more made clinic owner Crystal Westergard concerned. To fill these big shoes, a search was made for an expert sports therapist who might be able and willing to fill in for a while. This is where James Squire came into the picture. Interestingly, he's another physiotherapist who is waiting for his paperwork to be processed. The difference is James is a Canadian waiting to immigrate to Australia. James is a physiotherapist practicing with NorMed Clinic in Sherwood Park, as well as acting as trainer and coach for the Salisbury Sabres Football team. He has applied to practice in Australia, “Where it's warmer!” says James. As Westergard says “Camrose is fortunate to have world class therapists who want to work with our teams."
