How would you describe your childhood, was it fun or serious? Like a basketball, sometimes it’s up in the air and sometimes it has its ups and downs but I’m always bouncing back. As a child, was your childhood filled with crazy antics? NO, I was from an all-girl school and the craziest was when we moved to Johor and I went to co-ed school, I think that to me was the craziest. Were you always the one who lightened up a room with a joke and broke the silence? Is there any example which was a memorable one to you? When my mother would enter my sister and I in every fancy dress contest that my Dad’s company would throw where I discovered that I was good in acting pantomimes. When did it click to you that you wanted to become a comedian? I was invited by Kumar to guest star in 2 numbers, where I wore a really tight lace spandex leotard and I think the audience liked my joke and then the owners of Boom Boom Room asked me to work for them as Kumar’s sidekick. Upon realising this, what action did you take to become a comedian? What were the challenges you face? We bought a lot of joke books and tried to make jokes. My challenges, well you’re 20, you’re young, you’re a virgin and you go up on stage and you try to make people laugh. It’s not easy; I guess you persevere because it’s a job and you need the money to survive. How did you overcome those challenges? I had no other choice, workwise out there, the only option was to go back to Johor and end up selling off the rack clothes to “Ahlians”. So you bite your lips, go cry in the playground and you tell yourself you’ll be better this time. When did this opportunity shine for you? Please explain. When I left Boom Boom Room Singapore to join Boom Boom KL, when I took over the stage and the rest as they say is history. In your experience, was it hard to build your name in the industry being a woman? Do you feel, there was a disadvantage or a stereotype issue as you started out? Yes because I am not your typical stereotype and I push boundaries and I have my big size but my loud mouth to thank. The word ‘fierce’ wasn’t invented yet at that time but I believe that I was ‘fierce’ way before Tyra Banks hit puberty. When the word “Girl power” cross your mind. To me Girl Power is my SISTERS in Action; we can do anything as a woman if we set our mind. What is your advice to youngsters living their dreams in shadow? You don’t have to be smart, popular, and pretty or even when your parents look at you shaking their heads, that doesn’t mean it can’t be a success. The world is a strange place and sometimes all you need is to believe in yourself. To our young readers who idolise you, who wants to be a comedian, what are the necessary skills one should have to be a comedian? The ability to laugh at yourself before you asks others to laugh at you and be very thick skin and lots of hard work. How important is discipline to you and what is the one thing you would look forward in a person’s attitude? Discipline, it’s kind of my life motto. You got to work hard, be smart, sincere, hardworking and the ability to see the lighter side of life. What should youngsters do to kick start and make a move into this industry as a comedian? Work on your material and if you’re good, people will take notice. If you’re bad, please stop and don’t pollute the scene. As a comedian do you agree with “laughter is the best medicine” to live a happy life? Yes most definitely as laughter is about the only thing that gets you by. You need to be able to laugh through the irony of what life throws at you. When and what was your first attempt starting this out? I was going to take the performing artist job in Haw Par Villa Singapore instead of the nursing job at SGH, my mother cried and curse me before giving me the money to rent a room. Was there a special someone who motivated you in your attempts? Yes, my best friend Dave Soh from Singapore who always believed in me even when I sucked. I was the sidekick host and he was the lighting guy. Was there a moment you felt that being a comedian wasn’t going to work out for you? I wanted to do something totally different so I join a dance club TwelveSI as marketing executive because my dream was to own a show club, sigh. Where would your favourite place be to crack a joke? Who would your audience be and how is it you look at a person who cracks a joke which is not funny and at times annoy you and make you feel uncomfortable? Definitely, in an environment where alcohol is abundance and audience who understands English and has a dirty mind LOL. Well I smile and pretend to laugh until he really irritates me then I tell them the truth which can be quite acid. Do you think events like Comedy Kao Kao help newbies’ transition and finally what are the final words of inspiration you would like to shout out to our youngsters? Yes of course…So by all means have them or join them. Lastly you got to believe in yourself if you want to achieve anything, set goals and work towards it. CAMPUSPLUS \\ MARCH 2012

Try marbling!

Want to get your nails done but too costly, now you can do it yourself with just 8 simple steps. Water marble nails are creative and you can design it yourself to match it. How to marble your nails?

 Use a glass or ceramic bowl with room temperature water.  Secondly wrap scotch tape at the base of your fingernail.  Thirdly rub some Vaseline around your fingertips and fingernails to make the clean-up process a bit easier and faster as it can get pretty messy.

 Fourthly choose any colours of your nail polish that you want to work with and start to drip one drop of each of your chosen colours into a bulls eye pattern (anywhere from 3-6 rings works best with drops of colours into water.)

 Then use toothpick and swirl bulls eye to your liking. (You can be creative).  Insert your nail facing down into water and keep it there while you remove excess colour from the top of the water with a toothpick.

 Lift your finger out of the glass and let it dry and clean around cuticle with nail polish remover.  Lastly apply top coat and remove the tape and you are good to go show it off.

Beauty Q&A

Nail Polish & Nail Remover

Painting your nails is like putting on your makeup. It’s just another form of art that makes you feel better about yourself and well groomed. Q : It’s a common thing that nail polish can spoil your nail. So, is it bad for your nails or using the right one will help you avoid this?

A : Problems of weak nails are mainly due to imbalance level of fats and hydrations. In order to maintain good nails condition, the proper base coat & top coat which contains Vitamin E & Olive Oil are essential. As in THEFACESHOP’s nail care range, there is a base coat named Repair Therapy which contains Eco Formula will provide a 24 hours repair complex that instantly repairs the keratin layer of nails. At the same time, avoid using harsh nail colour remover as it will strip away the moisture from nails and it will effect dry brittle nails. Q : Does THEFACESHOP nail polish remover really work without giving a burning feeling? A : Absolutely! THEFACESHOP’s nail polish remover’s gentle formula quickly and

effectively removes shades of nail colour without harsh, drying effects. Thanks to its Berry Mix Complex, it protects nails, conditions cuticles and leaves hands with either sweet floral (Lavender) or fruity (strawberries) scents.

Q : Certain nail polishes stain my nail when I try to remove them. How to avoid this? A : In order to avoid staining, a good base coat for nail protection is essential. Of course,

the quality of the nail colour is important. Select nail colour which uses natural plant ingredients and free from harmful chemicals like Formaldehyde, Phthalate, Toluene and etc. Most importantly, to renew the nail colour every weekly, so that the nail could have a ‘short break’ in between. This is to ensure a more brightening and healthy look of the nails.

Q : Can you use a shiny top coat as a base coat and can you use a top coat for nail polish as a bottom coat? A:

Firstly, let’s discuss the functions of a good Base Coat and a good Top Coat. A good Base Coat is used for protection of nails from getting yellowish stains if you apply a nail colour for more than 1 week. At the same time, some Base Coat could provide some repairing functions to repair weak nails. For example, THEFACESHOP’s Face it Repair Therapy(Eco Multi Ampoule, Calcium Gel & Hydro Base) consists of 3 bottles of clear colour base coat for selections. You may use all 3 bottles as a stronger base coat before your nail colour applications. A good Top Coat can be used to protect the nail colours. It helps in brightening the nail colours and speed up the drying time of your application. Therefore, the functions of these 2 products are totally different and should not be used the other way round.

Q : What makes THEFACESHOP nail polish a choice or extra special? A : Its natural plant ingredients and its free from harmful chemicals like Formaldehyde,

Phthalate, Toluene and etc which makes it special for your nails

Q : Is there a way to make partially hardened nail polish in the bottle usable again? A : You may hold the bottle between your palms and shake with your palm to

unharden it.

Q : Why should we use non- organic nail polish? A : It is not a matter if we should use organic or non organic nail polish. An organic nail

polish provides a longer lasting effect than ordinary nail colour. Organic nail polish is made up of 90% water and it could be easily washed off with running water.

Q : Does the THEFACESHOP nail remover protect sensitive skin, how? A : THEFACESHOP’s nail colour remover is mild and gentle even for

sensitive skin conditions. At the same time, these nail polish removers do not contain strong alcohol which dries up skin. However, it is recommended to do a simple nail massage by using THEFACESHOP’s Flower Touch Hand Lotion to soften and nourish the surrounded area of nail to ensure beautiful hands & nail.

They came, they conquered and they revolutionized ‘sexy.’ Stefan Kendal Gordy aka DJs Redfoo and his nephew Skyler Austen Gordy aka SkyBlu are the duo’s who incorporated their music with a theme of partying and drinking. "Laughing My F**king Ass Off" is the abbreviation of LMFAO where it all started with their grandma’s idea who responded to their choice of name as Sexy Dudes. Starting out officially in Los Angeles in 2006, Redfoo and SkyBlu are the youngest son and grandson of Motown record label founder, Berry Gordy. Together with their force they created a sound that can be commonly associated to hard partying in their studio apartment and in 2007 at Miami where they got their inspiration to their first single "I'm in Miami Bitch", which was released on MySpace. From there they kicked off, building it higher when they were featured on David Guetta's international hit "Gettin' Over You" in 2010. In the same year, they began working on their second album which was released in June 2011 under the title "Sorry for Party Rocking". Their first single "Party Rock Anthem" features singer Lauren Bennett and producer GoonRock, hitting the top in eight countries and hit number 3 in U.S. and Canada. By then, who won’t know the birth of LMFAO? It was soon followed with their second single "Champange Showers" which features British artist Natalia Kills. LMFAO is now known for their phrase “I AM SEXY AND I KNOW IT” where they have left a benchmark on almost everybody and they are rocking it.

“LMFAO” are going all out by bringing their entire Party Rocker crew for this insane concert. So gather your friends and gear up into your funkiest outfits. Let's rock it out with LMFAO for a phenomenal performance for one night only. You are sure to be stuck on it till their next visit, so don’t miss it.

Whitney Houston “For The Love Of You”

1963 - 2012

WHITNEY HOUSTON an amazing legendary pop singer with a one-in-a-million voice and the golden voice girl of the music industry from mid 80s to late 90s has left us all with a shocking adieu at the age of 48. Her music influence will leave us all with an impact in each and everybody’s heart. Still a mystery as to what caused Whitney Houston’s death is going to remain just that. At least for a little while longer. Our condolences goes out to her family Bobbi Kristina Brown, her daughter with ex-husband Bobby Brown, father John Russell Houston, and mother Emily Cissy Houston. It is unbelievable news to all her fans that grew up listening to her music and dancing to the beat of her music “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”. It was a hit before and it will still be a hit forever especially in the mood to that song that will make you move with her remembrance. There won’t be another inspiring singer like her who sang what she really meant in every word and she will never be replaced as her death is a big loss to the music industry and all. Whitney who ruled as a pop music’s queen until her majestic voice was ravaged by drug use and her regal image ruined by bizarre behaviour with 14 years 9 months confused marriage to Bobby Brown is now gone. The daughter to Cissy Houston started out by singing in church as a child, a backup singer in a club and modelling before music mogul Clive Davis noticed her. Starting out small and difficult, she brought life to her music in her album debut “Saving All My Love For You” which took her to Grammy’s and there a star was born. Whitney also made it big in 1992 with her signature achievement in the film “The Bodyguard” where she acted as a superstar singer guarded by a former US secret service agent which is one of the most romantic movies that you won’t want to miss. It was there she shined with her music “I Will Always Love You” and “YES” indeed we will always love you. Whitney was a person who didn’t get in the business to talk about her personal life and what so ever, she got in the business to sing. She tried to make people happy with her song as it wasn’t her life story that made records as it was her voice that broke records! With this it will break the silence or doubts of her death where her sad life story won’t matter as her great talent cut short but it will carry on for years to come if her records live on and so will she.

A message in her song that will always be cherished: Bittersweet memories that is all I’m taking with me, so goodbye. Please, don’t cry. I hope life treats you kind and I hope you have all you’ve dreamed of and I wish to you, joy and happiness. But above all this, I wish you love.

The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr is a parody of the 36 plays written by William Shakespeare with all of them being performed in shortened form. To get a clearer picture, think of Monty Python only in a Malaysian style as you get entertained by live-action, improvisation and highlygoofy antics from just three actors – Charles Donnelly, Kingsley Judd and Gavin Yap - whose wisecracking antics will bring the roof down. The play was written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, former founding members of the Reduced Shakespeare Company. The play was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1987 and later played at the Criterion Theatre in London where it ran for nine record-breaking years. It has become one of the world’s most popular shows, playing frequently in a variety of languages. It is notable for holding the (self-proclaimed) world record for the shortest-ever performance of Hamlet clocking in at 43 seconds.

insomnia HAVING TROUBLE CATCHING YOUR ZZzzzzzzz The one thing anybody can do it right is sleeping and when you are not getting enough hours of sleep. It can start to be a problem for you as all the partying, late nights out and the last minute crashing for exam or assignment could seriously be inviting insomnia. It might sound scary like a disease or some drug name but it is not. It is a sleeping disorder which occurs due to stress and it’s a common occurrence among college/university students. Insomnia starts with lack of awareness and lack of tolerance to deal with pressure around you as student tend to face a new environment after leaving home and tend to learn to deal with their new life being a survivor.

steps to avoid insomnia

Get back to your routine or set your bedtime. Try to discipline yourself or set and follow a time table. Make sure you have a comfortable cosy bed where hostel beds can be a turn off but you can turn it on by making it look like your very own hotel bed which is attractive with pillows and cosy comforters. Eat at the correct time and don’t skip meals. Do take your supper before you go to bed with a mug of hot chocolate and some dunk cookies. No coffee or tea please. Avoid partying or clubbing on weekdays even though it's ladies night on Wednesday. You can push it all to the weekend, it’s much more happening then.

Insomnia is divided into three types and they are transient insomnia, acute or short-term insomnia and chronic insomnia.

Stay away from anything that stimulates thoughts such as Facebooking, tweeting, "Yam cha", gaming and etc.

There are a lot of students out there who are not aware that they are facing this problem and what causes this problem.

Make sure you take a shower before your bedtime because a good bath will make you feel drowsy or relaxed and not sticky or uncomfortable.

To explore this, it is important to get an understanding of the disorder itself. Acute Insomnia is a mild form of insomnia that occurs when upset emotions or an external stressor like parental pressure starts.

Stay healthy by going for a jog, exercising or practicing mind relaxation such as meditation or yoga.

Then there is Transient Insomnia that may last for a few days or a week at most. The cause can usually be attributed to a larger stress such as flying into a different time zone, excitement over an issue or even worrying about the future. Chronic Insomnia is the worst where it can drag for years to recover or which can also be inherited. You might be wondering what does this got to do with you as a student. Well, as a student in college you can't maintain that continuous relaxing state of sleep you once had and follow that bedtime by 10PM because daddy or mummy is not around to tuck you in or chase you to bed anymore. In a way you have “MERDEKA” you are free to do as you like in college. When you do start hanging out or aka “Lepak”, you might wake up in the morning restless, tired, disorientated and unfocused. This eats into your ability to concentrate, study and worse things that you never knew. Over a long period of time, the inconsistent sleep condition will drain you physically, mentally and emotionally. As a student, if you can't study well, it will start to show on your grades, assignments and ultimately, exam marks. There is however some good news to help you work on a few steps that can be taken to overcome this condition successfully if you think you are having the early symptoms of insomnia.

By doing this simple steps above and you still can’t sleep then please seek advice from a doctor as you might need help and medication or see a counsellor.

A professor, teaching a college sexuality class, was discussing the frequency of sex that could still be considered normal. "Many people find that sex every other week is sufficien t frequency to satisfy, which is fine. Yet others wan t to make love nightly, and there's nothing wrong with that either. Let's take an informal survey of this class. Don't be embarrassed. Please answer honestly. How many off you here make love mor e than twice a week?" A few hands shot up. "Twice a week?" A few more hands. "Weekly, on average?" Many hands. "Once every two weeks?" he continu ed and, "Once a month?" and "Once every severa l months?" and finally, "Once a year?" At this last category, one hand shot up, waving most eagerly. "Pardon my curiosit y," the professor asked, "But if you only make love once a year, why are you so excited over it?" Replied the student, "Tonight's the night!" By~ Tan Sin Yee University Tunku Abdul Rahma n

A college student was in philosophy class, where there was a class discussion about whether or not God exists, The professor had the following logic: “Has anyone in this class heard God?” Nobody spoke. “Has anyone in this class touched God?” Again, nobody spoke. “Has anyone in this class seen God?” When nobody spoke for the third time, he simply stated, “Then there is no God.” The student did not like the sound of this at all, and asked for permission to speak. The professor granted it, and the student stood up and asked the following questions of his classmates: “Has anyone in this class heard our professor’s brain?” Silence. “Has anyone in this class touched our professor’s brain?” Absolute silence. “Has anyone in this class seen our professor’s brain?” When nobody in the class dared to speak, the student concluded, “Then, according to our professor’s logic, it must be true that our professor has no brain!
