The young are known to be receptive to technology, but the engineering students of Taylor’s University proved that they can be creative too - their functional, even futuristic inventions won over the public during the Taylor’s University Engineering Fair 2011. Kicking off on 17 December 2011 at the picturesque Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, the two-day Engineering Fair saw 73 innovative student projects on display. Impressing the public were inventive designs that could potentially redefine specific industries, such as the remotely operated vehicle for deepwater operations, hydrogen fuel cell vehicle for eco-friendly driving and mobile trash can dumper for construction sites. One of these was the neural operated wheelchair. The team behind the Neuro Wheel Chair were initially looking for ideas. When their group leader suggested designing a wheel chair powered by brain signals, the first year students did not even flinch. “We know it is possible. Our group leader proved that to us when he built the mind-controlled robot during the previous semester,” said team member Lee Jing Yi, 19.

The Neuro Wheel Chair’s motion which is commanded by brainwaves picked up by a wireless Emotiv EEG Headset wowed the press and the public during its demonstration. All teams were scrutinised by judges who expressed surprise at the creativity and functionality of designs exhibited at the fair. “Taylor University’s engineering students have displayed rare abilities for their age. I am impressed,” said Christine Ng, judge for Most Innovative Design Project Award.

LIVE WIRE Sunway University Business School wins PNB Quiz Derick Yee, Sonia Lim and Yap Wan Li who represented the Sunway University Business School (SUBS) during the national level Investment Quiz Competition organised by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) made Sunway University proud when they championed the 2011 competition. The students did not falter even though they were perceived to be ‘newbies’ in the competition and displayed strength and character throughout. This is the first time in 11 years a private institution (IPTS) has won. Three students were chosen to represent the university in the final round that was held at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang in December. The trio from Sunway University competed against 32 teams during the semi-finals and landed themselves in the finals against Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia. For their efforts, the trio won a cheque worth RM 5,000 for Sunway University and they each received a cheque of RM 1,000 from Amanah Saham Gemilang (ASG). The students topped the quiz by getting the most number of diagonal and horizontal strikes and boxes during the competition. The competition was part of PNB’s aim to promote awareness and educate university students on the relationship between risks and return in long-term investments. The depth of terminologies and current issues in investments and economic developments in university students was put to the test. Yap Wan Li added, “It was a progressive feeling of excitement as we could see that we were leading the competition judging by the total scores collected along the way. However, we could not help but feel a deep sense of pride when we were announced champions of the PNB competition.” We are glad to have made our university proud by being the first private university which has won the competition since it was first held.”

Study by Nottingham University determines how Malaysian Chinese recognise faces

New research by The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus has shown that when it comes to recognising people, the Malaysian Chinese have adapted their facial recognition techniques to cope with living in a multicultural environment. The study was led by Chrystalle B.Y. Tan, a PhD student at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. The results have been published online in the prestigious scientific journal PloS One. This research is the first PhD student publication for Nottingham’s School of Psychology in Malaysia. The study revealed that it is already known that we are better at recognising faces from our own race but researchers have only recently questioned how we assimilate the information we use to recognise people. The team used specialised eye tracking technology to investigate the visual strategies used to recognise photographs of faces. They recruited 22 Malaysian Chinese student volunteers from across Nottingham’s Malaysia campus. The results showed that Malaysian Chinese used a unique mixed strategy by focusing on the eyes and nose more than the mouth. “Our research has shown that Malaysian Chinese adopt a unique looking pattern which differed from both Westerners and Mainland Chinese, possibly due to the multicultural nature of the country,” Chrystalle Tan said.

Use Perfume Effectively! Valentines is a special occasion. Wearing perfume is just one of those things - but that’s a whole other story! The perfume is your perfect finishing touch after being made up to look pretty and attractive. The choice of perfume is entirely personal. You can use different types of perfume depending on your moods. Just make a mental note that you use perfume because it is a good habit to do so and it is a part of your beauty regimen. Besides, perfumes make you smell good and in a way help boost your self-confidence. Remember that the perfume is more effective if it is applied to warm points of your body like the pulse, wrist, inside the elbow and the back of your ears. Always remember to spray yourself from a distance at 12 inches, then step into it. Now have a great Valentine.

Beauty Q&A

he season of love is here as Cupid gets ready to unleash his arrows come February 14. Looking good is something every girl wants to do on Valentine’s. But the T-Zone is usually a problem. To alleviate the issue, we got facial care experts Wipro Unza Malaysia to give their expert advise on how to have a healthy T-Zone this Valentines. Q:

In class, I’m faced with the cold temperature of the air-cond. Then I step out into the hot sun. How does the change in temperature affect my T-Zone. What should I do?

A : One important thing to remember is: hot weather and humidity may

cause your skin it to be oily.

a) The first step to dealing with oily skin involves cleansing twice a day with an oil-control or acne control cleanser. Wash your face with warm water and use a mild cleanser. Here, Aiken Tea Tree Oil Spot Away Facial Cleanser can deep cleanse clogged pores without leaving skin dry and taut. Remove excess oil, control shine and refine pores naturally with Tea Tree Oil. b) Oily skin needs to be exfoliated on a regular basis. The amount of exfoliation per week depends entirely on the individual. You may only need to exfoliate two or three times a week depending on how oily your skin is. You should avoid exfoliating if you currently have an acne breakout to avoid skin irritation. c) Pat your face dry, and apply toner to firm your skin, and close pores after you cleanse and exfoliate. Toner will also aid in reducing oil secretions that cause skin to look greasy without clogging pores. It removes any residue or dirt that could be left over after cleansing. You can use Aiken Tea Tree Oil Spot Away Pore Refining Toner which is a mild toner suitable for oily or acne-prone skin, containing Tea Tree Oil to help protect skin from pimples and Aiken Tea Tree Oil Spot Away Daily Moisturising Lotion for long lasting moisturizing and softening effect on skin. d) The next step is to apply a moisturizer with UV protection. Even if you have oily skin, you still require a moisturizer. It is advisable to choose a light, oil-free water based formulation moisturizer like Aiken Tea Tree Oil Spot Away Daily Moisturising Lotion which is ideal for oily and combination skin. Formulated to skin pH, it helps to control shine, soothe and hydrate skin. e) If you wear makeup, use only foundation that is designed for oily skin. This may take some experimenting, but it’s important so that you’re not blocking pores, which leads to acne breakouts. Also, use a matte foundation to avoid the shiny appearance that oily skin is known for. When you’re applying foundation, it’s best to use a stippling brush or a sponge makeup applicator instead of your fingers.

Q : I always had a fine T-Zone, but now it’s usually oily. What should I do? A : Getting rid of oily skin and acheiving a shiny T-Zone is not an easy thing to do. Oily

skin tends to produce excess sebum. Althought sebum is necessary to promote natural ‘round-the-clock moisture’ for the skin, too much sebum makes the skin look greasy, dirty and unattractive. Nowadays there are great products in the market that can really help combat oily skin by absorbing the excess oil and reduce the appearance of open pores throughout the day. Here are some tips that you may find useful and we suggest you Aiken Tea Tree Oil Spot Away Range which is complete with UV protection and oil control: 5 Tips for improving Oily Skin a) Oily skin makes its own moisturisation but you should also want to moisturise it well. Use a water based moisturisers. Moisturising is crucial especially if you have combination skin. b) If you have pimples you should treat them specifically. It’s important to diagnose the pimples and make sure it is not acne, which has its own unique treatments. c) Make sure to use makeup that doesn’t clog the pores and is oil-free. There are really good foundations for oily skin these days that control the shine and keep the skin matte. d) Use Aiken Tea Tree Oil Range with UV protection and Oil Control.

Q : Why are pimples so prone to break out on my T-Zone. I’m worried because Valentine’s Day is coming.

A : Skin tends to be oily, especially on the T-Zone mainly due to the climate in Asia. Furthermore, the oiliness of the T-Zone can be attributed to several factors such as humidity, hormonal and even your daily diet. Check out Aiken Tea Tree Oil Spot Away Range which offers a complete set of skin care products from cleanser, toner, moisturiser, pimple cream and 100% Tea Tree Oil – which comes in a small bottle, acts as a bonus value for your skin in maintaining a clear and non-oily skin in just few simple steps leaving you worry-free for Valentine’s Day! Q : What do I need to do to achieve that amazing looking T-Zone for Valentine’s Day? A : Matte is the answer! Cleanse – Tone – Moisturise with Aiken Tea Tree Oil Spot Away

range, which controls oil production with UV protection on the T-Zone, followed by a light coat of matte foundation. Remember; keep a mattifying blotting papers handy. Voila, you got an amazing T-Zone for Valentine’s Day!

f) Before going to sleep at night, remember to always cleanse, tone, and moisturize to maintain healthy-looking skin. This is important especially if you wear makeup. This keeps your pores and face free from pimples.

Q : I like eating junk foods, especially during revision. This won’t affect me right? A : Contrary to what you believe, eating junk food really does affect your

skin. This is because of the excessive sugar and sodium it contains, plus the artificial colouring and preservatives can affect your skin’s clarity in the long term. Thus, should you need a snack during revision, it is best for you to stick to fresh fruits as they are healthier and loaded with vitamins that could keep your skin zit-free!

Q : As an Asian, what should I know about my T-Zone? A : Asian skin differs from Caucasian. Asian skin tends to be oily, especially

on the T-Zone. Furthermore, the oiliness of the T-Zone can be aggravated by several factors such as humidity and hormonal imbalance. Hence, it is recommended to use products suitable to our tropical climate. Aiken Tea Tree Oil Spot Away skin care range is suitable especially if you want a non-oily and pimple-free skin.

Q : How do I fight off the effects of the hot sun? A : It is important to pick the right product that is suitable for your skin. For

example, Aiken Tea Tree Oil Spot Away Range has some added feature meant for oil-controlling and UV protection.

he was known as a young, pop-punk tomboy who refused to resort to skin-baring come-ons, preferring to entice the record-buying public with her powerhouse voice, highspirited melodies, and straighttalking lyrics. By the age of 15, this Canadian singer, songwriter, musician and actress Avril Ramona Lavigne had appeared on stage with Shania Twain; by 16, she had signed a twoalbum recording contract with Arista Records worth more than US$2 million. She burst out on the music scene at age 17. Generation Lavigne had arrived.

Pop Punk Princess:

Avril Lavigne

The Beginning of Her Music Career Avril Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984 in Belleville, Ontario but spent most of her youth in the small town of Napanee. She dropped out of high school after the 11th grade when she secured a record deal. When Avril was almost 18, she released "Complicated" from her debut album titled: "Let Go," which went 6x platinum. As a petite skater girl from a small town, Avril has shown she is independent, full of confidence and determination, providing a good combination to make "Complicated" a musical breakthrough. "Complicated" went to number #1 on the Billboards Top 100 while also earning her 5 Grammy nominations, MTV music awards, MTV European music awards and many more. She followed this with 2004’s 3x-platinum Under My Skin, and 2007’s platinum The Best Damn Thing. Over the course of her three albums, Lavigne scored a string of international hit singles: “Complicated,” “Sk8er Boi,” “I’m With You,” “Losing Grip,” “Don’t Tell Me,” “My Happy Ending,” “Nobody’s Home,” “Keep Holding On,” “Girlfriend,” “When You’re Gone,” “Hot,” and “The Best Damn Thing.” She earned eight Grammy Award nominations, won seven Canadian Juno Awards, and sold more than 30 million albums and nearly 20 million tracks worldwide. Over the years, Avril has made numerous appearances on the big screen, including roles in Fast Food Nation and The Flock. Avril married fellow Canadian Deryck Whibley, lead singer for Sum 41, on July 15, 2006 in Montecito, California. They divorced 3 years later on the grounds of getting married too young.

Avril Lavigne On Stage In Malaysia This will be her first performance here after a major controversy back in August 2008 where an Islamic movement in Malaysia claimed that the singer was too sexy and it was not the right time to perform here due to the Independence Day celebrations which was two days away. Avril Lavigne Black Star Concert Live In Malaysia will be held at the Stadium Merdeka Kuala Lumpur on the 18th February. This time, the Avril Lavigne Concert in KL is presented by Tune Talk and brought to you by JS Concert Productions. Tickets for the concert is available in selected places such as Rock Corner KLCC, The Gardens, Mid Valley as well The Guitar Store outlets. Prices are from RM98 onwards.

Avril started playing guitar when she was ten. She has a miniature schnauzer named Sam. She sings the theme song for the film Eragon. She has a star tattooed on the inside of her left wrist.

Album Reviews

Break the Spell Daughtry

In Case You didn’t Know Olly Murs

British singer-songwriter, musician and TV Presenter is out with his second studio album. Some might recognise Murs as The X Factor contestant in the England hit tv show. The album is essentially a lightweight pop album good for easy listening. Murs goes lightly from cute reggae (Heart Skips a Beat) to sax-blaring 50s pop (Dance with Me Tonight) to Bacharach/Davidish lushness (Just Smile), and sounds as if he’s enjoying himself enormously. Album is already released.

Daughtry is back with their 3rd studio album, follow up to their 2009 successful album Leave this town. According to frontman and former American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry, the new album will sound nothing like the previous two. Critics have panned this album for its more Country sound as opposed to the hard rock they’re known for. One song to look out for is the emotive “Gone Too Soon” which is an ode to a dead child. Album is already released.

Pink Friday : Roman Reloaded Nicki Minaj

Pink Friday : Roman Reloaded is the upcoming second studio album of Nicki Minaj. The album puts focus on the return of Roman Zolanski, one of Minaj’s alter egos that was first featured on her 2010 debut album. The Westports Malaysia Dragons opened the ABL tournament in dramatic fashion by defeating San Miguel Beerman from the Phillipines. Trailing by as much as 10 points in the start of the third quarter, the Dragons came roaring back using a 19-5 run fueled by 13 third quarter points from Tiras Wade. San Miguel took back the lead in the fourth round by 4 points with 2:15 left to play in regulation. Two clutch free throws by Wade with 14 seconds to go tied the game 73-73 and the game was sent to overtime. At halftime, Coach Ariel Vanguardia told his team to keep fighting and to fix a few errors they made in the first half. Wade scored a game high 28 points on 11/20 shooting. He was unstoppable when he got inside the three point line, going 9/11. Guganeswaran Batumalai and Chris Pacana paced the game for the Dragons, both combining for 9 assists.

Coach Ariel on the game: “It was great. I would say Nic was the player of the game. He hit the crucial baskets. Deep inside, I know he would be good in overtime because I have coached against him and he would always hit the big shots against me. Even though Brian and Wade filled up the box score, we had a lot of role players step up.We made the stops at the right time and that’s how we got the win. But this is just the first game. We have to think about the next game.”

How to overcome

procrastination S

o there you are; its 3 am, class starts in 6 hours and you’re frantically typing out that 8 page assignment to hand in. You had 6 weeks to do it; but meh, why bother right. So there you are; rushing. Procrastination won. How many reading this instantly flashed back to that one time it happened to you? What one time, its a dozen right? Well, that’s the thing – In college, we’re plagued by this habit to procrastinate. It seems like we’re at its mercy.

Assignment due in 6 weeks – Why bother? Later-lah. And thats why you find yourself rushing that last minute burning the midnight oil hating yourself. And then, do it all over again. It never ends, does it? To beat this thing, yes you can beat it, it’s first important to understand what it is. Procrastination is simply the habit of delaying something because you undervalue its importance. The 2 important points here are delaying habit and undervalue importance.

IT’S SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO; NOT HAVE TO. Like it or not, we really do better at things we want to do. E.g. Hanging out. It’s just the way we all are. Speak to your lecturer. Only they can tell you why this is something you want (“Might come out in exam”). Find something about it you want to do, then take over and lead.

FIND OUT HOW URGENT THE JOB IS, THEN PLAN AROUND IT. Go speak to your lecturer. Ask them how big, important and/ or urgent the assignment. Ask questions that determine how critical the whole thing is, only then schedule your time around that by determining how many hours you’re going to spend on it.

BREAK IT DOWN Small assignments are a few days, but what about those that run into weeks at a time? Well, break it down. Your lecturers want you to do the assignment, they don’t want you to finish it right now. There’s a difference. Break it down to smaller pieces, and map each against one day and spend small time doing small bits.

REWARD MOTIVATION The oldest trick in the book. Like or don’t like, rewarding yourself with something, e.g. Steak Meal, if you accomplish that job by the time you set works. Even better if you finish sooner. A meal is a meal, but a meal because of a victory, now that is sweet.

Think about it: You delaying your assignment is a habit because you don’t think it’s important enough to do now because you’re maybe tired, or don’t care, or lecturer is chillax or just because you don’t think it’s important. See?

DO IT EARLIER If you know you are most likely to go clubbing on a Wednesday night, then complete the assignment earlier at 4pm or so. Since you already think it’s important to go clubbing, and the assignmen is important too, do one earlier than the other. Kill the proverbial two birds here.

Now that you know, it means we can get down to “How to overcome it!”.

TAKE A BREAK This has the chance to be misunderstood, so read carefully. You can only study a max of 45 minutes a stretch (studies show). Take a 15 minute break. It’s about doing this right, not doing this to die. Take a break, get relaxed, then jump back in immediately.

7 SET A TEAM DATELINE If you’re working in a team, especially where your work is important to someone else, promise them you will finish on a pre-determined date or they can complain to the lecturer you didn’t do your work.

ASK SOMEONE ELSE TO CHECK UP ON YOU. Sorry folks, but this time, peer pressure works! The positive kind that is. This is the principle behind losing weight and other self-help groups. Before you start lamenting, understand that it is widely recognized as a highly effective approach.
