The legendary Arnold Palmer drives the first ball on dedication day.

ABOUT THE COURSE

The Lonnie Poole Golf Course is 200 acres of living laboratory for our academic turf sciences, plant and soil sciences and sustainable practices programs and home to our men’s and women’s golf teams. The course has unique features that set it apart from other regional courses, representing the evolution in golf course architecture toward sustainability by fitting into and protecting the natural environment. It leans heavily on traditional Scottish designs while accommodating the natural landscape. Superintendent and NC State Alum, Brian Green was recently named one of six finalists for TurfNet's Superintendent of the Year for his expertise in managing bentgrass in the unpredictable North Carolina summers. Our course is also a training ground for our PGA Professional Golf Management program, where students get hands-on training in business fundamentals of golf including marketing, finance, merchandising, instruction, club fitting and services and tournament operations.

DESIGN The Arnold Palmer Design group used inspiration from features in the existing landscape as the primary cues for their design. The golf course routing is dictated by large elevation changes and it meanders around large buffer areas that were left in place to protect streams and wetlands in the Neuse River watershed. The buffers also provide a protected habitat for wildlife and native plant species.

GRASSES The course has many well-known turfgrass species at its heart: 419 bermudagrass on the fairways and an A1/A4 creeping bentgrass mix on the greens. The tee boxes are bermudagrass in full-sun exposure and zeon or zorro zoysia grass in the shade. The bunkers are outlined with El Toro, zeon or zorro zoysia grass to provide visual definition and low maintenance edges. 3

ROUGHS A mixture of four fine fescue species are in place throughout the golf course. Wild grasses — Little Bluestem and Broomsedge — were transplanted into the fescue in localized pockets allowing the roughs to evolve into a mix of cool and warm-season grasses adapted to the North Carolina environment that have low resource and maintenance requirements. The rough areas establish a color contrast with the turfgrasses on the fairways and tees. In summer months, the mature fescue in the rough are dominated by tans and browns compared to the vivid greens of bermudagrass and zoysiagrass. The reverse is true in winter, when roughs are green, and dormant bermudagrass and zoysiagrass are tan.

BUNKERS One of our most distinct trademarks is our bunker design, featuring irregular shapes and jagged edges, as geometric shapes are rarely seen in nature.

GPS-EQUIPPED GOLF CARTS Our electric E-Z-GO carts are equipped with the newest GPS technology and can display yardage as well as hole layouts and offer real-time scoring and advertising that can be used for events.

Islands and peninsulas with zeon zoysia grass intersect and blend with the roughs. The course uses a Better Billy Bunker System which complements our sustainable approach to the game of golf by requiring less labor/emissions to maintain consistent bunker play, rain or shine. Our “down time” following heavy rains has been reduced to almost zero, as this design permits rapid draining and a quick return to play.

AUDUBON SIGNATURE SANCTUARY Audubon International has certified our course as a Signature Golf Sanctuary. Ours is only the second universityowned facility in the world to achieve this prestigious designation. Core to this recognition is the commitment to deliver high-quality environmental education and to facilitate the sustainable management of land, water, wildlife, and other natural resources. Our turfgrass is integrated seamlessly into the surrounding environment, leaving critical buffer areas undisturbed. And with geofencing-technology found with each golf cart, we can ensure our players don’t inadvertently drive into protected areas. 4

RATINGS, YARDAGE AND PACE OF PLAY RATINGS AND SLOPE

The golf course has six sets of tees that offer a variety of yardages from 4,869 to 7,358. With the hilly terrain (especially on the back nine), the yardage plays longer because some landing areas are into hills and limit roll. The Wolfpack Tees (sitting at 6,100 yards) have proven to be a perfect distance for outings and special events that include players of all skill levels.

We have adopted the nationwide “Play it Forward” initiative that encourages players to play “one tee up” from where they think they should play according to the yardage. This makes the game more fun for sure.

WOLFPACK

The USGA has rated the pace of play for our course at 4 hours and 22 minutes, but for daily play the course pace is usually closer to the four-hour range.
