2016

Greetings from Camp Joy Thank you for helping to make 2015 a terrific year at Camp Joy. Significant program and capital improvements meant that more youth had the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed through life-long experience-based learning. We are excited about launching the Leadership Village Initiative along with the Creative Arts Initiative. These two projects involve bringing key program spaces and cabins up-todate making them larger, brighter, more energy efficient and having increased functionality. As part of the five year strategic plan, Camp Joy has been focused on delivering programs that include multi-interactions with our participants including follow-up weekend camp programs throughout the year to reinforce positive lessons for lifelong learning. This is an exciting time for Camp Joy and we appreciate you being a part of the journey. We are committed to continuously improving Camp Joy’s outdoor experiences for youth and adults of all ages and invite you to be involved. Thank you again for your wonderful support that made 2015 an “All-Star” year. Mike McGinty, Camp Joy Foundation, Executive Director

Mike McGinty and Amy Thompson

Thank You Amy for 19 Years of Service! Amy Thompson concluded 19 years serving at Camp Joy in May 2016. Amy started at Camp Joy in 1997 as a Summer Camp Counselor/ Archery specialist, then served as Camps Director and finally as Executive Director from 2010-2016. We are all most grateful for Amy’s dedication, commitment, and passion to help transform 1,000’s of lives through the Camp Joy mission! Amy’s new adventure is at the Cincinnati Chamber as the Director of Leadership Cincinnati and Leadership Action. 2

Thank You Thank you very much to our generous donors! Your support provided the opportunity for children to learn, grow, and succeed through camps and outdoor education programs.

Joni’s Greenhouse was dedicated in memory of Joni Herschede.

The Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trusts, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee made a generous gift to the endowment to help ensure Camp Joy’s future financial sustainability.

Camp Joy board member, Dave Palm, hosted over 150 guests at the new 84.51° building to celebrate the generosity of Camp Joy donors. 4

The Thomas J. Emery Memorial and the Louise H. and David S. Ingalls Foundation provided generous gifts to help with renovations to the Leadership Village.

As part of the American Friends Service Committee Joel Dean, along with 21 other students, volunteered and helped build the original cabins at Camp Joy in 1960. Mr. Dean continues to give back and recently donated funds to build multiple “friendship circles” around camp.

On April 26, 2015 over 40 friends and supporters attended the “Ride for Joy” event at the Cyclebar in Hyde Park to raise funds for Camp Joy’s programs. 5

An “All-Star” Year at Camp Joy Camps Foster Confidence and a Sense of Belonging Thousands of youth who may not have the opportunity to experience a traditional summer camp benefit from Camp Joy’s programs each year. Camp Joy partners with the Amputee Coalition for one program that makes a difference for kids with limb loss and limb differences. The Amputee Coalition’s Paddy Rossbach Camp hosted at Camp Joy, offers kids from across the country fun and exciting activities where they are challenged to increase independence, test themselves, and build new friendships in a supportive, caring environment. Growing up differently than most kids can be pretty tough. Brooke Ames was born as an amputee, after suffering from limb loss in utero. While growing up in a small town Brooke never felt accepted by her peers and was frequently the target of bullying.

“When I was ten years old I found out Camp Joy was going to have a camp specifically for amputees that summer and I decided to sign up and give it a shot. The moment I stepped off the bus I immediately felt welcomed and accepted by other amputees who were just like me. I never felt like the odd one out and everyone wanted me to join in their games and activities. I had never been so included and supported by other kids my age. When I was fifteen I told myself, “I’m going to work here when I become old enough.” Two years later, I applied to be a junior counselor. When I got the job I was so ecstatic I wanted to cry! Working at Camp Joy truly changed my life in a way that I can't even describe, and I will work here for as long as I can so that I can do the same for others” —Brooke Ames 6

Outdoor Education Expands Green House and Nature Center More than 5,000 students from over 60 schools stepped outside of the traditional classroom for a unique and exciting learning experience with Camp Joy’s Outdoor Education Programs. Thanks to a generous donation from Debbie Huffman, Camp Joy has a renovated nature center and a new greenhouse. Every animal has an upgraded living arrangement and the new greenhouse provides year round natural history lessons. The camps team also uses the greenhouse for a “farm to table” experience where kids have fun learning about food and healthy choices. “Joni’s Greenhouse and the Cedar Crest Nature Center allow us to better connect campers, students and adults to the natural world. Experiences now range from holding a happy animal and reading informative displays to tasting freshly picked herbs and planting a seed. Wow and awe is achieved without dangling 30 feet in the air, it is firmly planted in these amazing buildings.”—Nate Hirt, Camp Joy Youth Program Director

“I had a very good experience at Camp Joy. I learned about how awesome the Earth is. Camp Joy taught me how to take care of the land around me. The Earth is such a great place but we need to take care of it. That is what I learned at Camp Joy.” —Seventh Grade Student 7

VentureOut! Maximizing Partnerships Transforms Teams Maximizing Partnerships is a Camp Joy program born from a partnership with Damian Scallon, author, business consultant, and longtime Camp Joy supporter. Targeted to our business and industry clients, the premise of the program is based on Damian’s book The Outsourcing Conundrum. As service companies and other organizations begin to rely more heavily on outsourcing and partnerships, the program provides a much needed model to help them manage these mission critical relationships and achieve better outcomes for their customers. Maximizing Partnerships brings The Outsource Conundrum concepts to life in an eye opening and transformative process resulting in the shared vision, improved accountability, and increased communication required for world class results. The program launched in November 2015 with 22 participants from Voith Industrial Services. Revenue from Maximizing Partnerships and other Venture Out! programs help fund the cost of Camp Joy’s youth programs. This is another way Camp Joy’s programs provide leadership development for our communities. “This program is a great addition to our offerings because its unique content and design allow our clients to learn the Conundrum concepts through practical, hands on exercises. The ability to educate our clients through this immersive three-day program shows our strength of curriculum and facilitation.” —David Bleedorn, Venture Out! Director

Life-long Impact

David Sanders, past camper and Director of Findlay Street Boys & Girls Cub.

David Sanders grew up in poverty, surrounded by drug dealers and users. When he was 16, he remembers a drug user asking him for money and how he realized he didn’t want to go down that path.

9

A bright spot in his childhood was attending Camp Joy through the Boys and Girls Clubs. It was a time of many firsts: fishing, canoeing, and hiking in some really beautiful woods! He credits his enthusiasm for nature and hiking to his Joy experience. David is now the Director of Findlay Street Boys and Girls Club. “It is so rewarding” David shared. David is able to send campers annually to Camp Joy through his club to have life-impacting experiences as he did as a child. David fondly remembers his camp counselors and how he loved Joy’s food. He was able to relish Joy’s food again when he and his daughters attended Joy’s 2015 Harvest Fest. “I wanted to explore the woods – the girls voted for the games,” he joked. “We’ll hike next time; I want them to learn to love nature like I did at Joy.”

Boys & Girls Club and Camp Joy leaders with David Sanders, Club Director, pictured in front of the current Findlay Street Club. This club is located in Cincinnati's West End, at the original location of the St. Barnabus Church that founded Camp Joy in 1937!

Camp Joy and Boys & Girls Club have partnered for over 20 years to serve thousands of youth through camp and retreat experiences.
