A letter to my daughter The following is an edited version of a letter that appeared in the North Island Gazette. It was written by Port Hardy resident Kelley Geisler upon the graduation of her daughter, Megan. I wish I had the courage you have to stand up in front of an audience, but I don’t. I do, however want the world to know how proud – such a small word for such a big feeling – I am of you and what an honour it is to be your mom. You are funny, have a heart as big as the universe, (and) just the right amount of getting into trouble to keep me on my evil mommy toes. You have style and grace, confidence, brains and beauty. You are a good friend, the best sister in the world, a hard worker and a kind soul. You are the real

Megan and Kelley Geisler. deal. If I had, when you were born, put on paper what kind of person I would dream of raising, she would be who you are. When I took you to your first day of play school and left you there, I thought my heart would break. I sat outside and cried. I did the same thing on your first day at kindergarten, elementary school and high school. Yes, my lovely Megan, I was stalking you at a very early age.

Being there just in case you needed me. I’m working on not doing that anymore; I know you have to live your life without me watching over your every move. I know you will make some good choices and some bad choices. Learn from both. The choices you make are the person you will be. Use your head for math equations and common sense stuff, (but) use your heart for life decisions. If you’re not sure which is which, call me and I will try to help you sort it out. Megan, cry when the feeling comes upon you, don’t hold anger in your heart where laughter and joy belong. Make sure you measure greatness by your standards, not anybody else’s. Please remember happiness is an inside job it’s always nice

when other people say they’re proud of us, but more important is how proud we are of ourselves. Keep your heart full of gratitude, honey. You will always get what you need, not always what you want. If you follow your heart, it will all work out the way it is supposed to. Believe in something, it’s your choice as to what that something is, just believe. My baby, my little girl, my great (most of the time) teenager, my beautiful young lady, my Megan. Remember I will always love you (and) I will always be proud of you. No one can ever take away our moments, and there are many. Thank you for picking me to be your mom. See you Sunday for dinner. Love Mom

SIGONELLA, ITALY — Originally designed for antisubmarine warfare, the CP-140 Aurora long-range patrol aircraft is showing off its capabilities in the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions that have come its way on Operation MOBILE. The bi-coastal Auroras — one is from 14 Wing Greenwood, N.S., and the other came all the way from 19 Wing Comox, B.C., — arrived March 25 at the NATO naval air station in Sigonella, Italy. The Sigonella detachment was the last-deployed element of Task Force Libeccio, the air component of Canada’s contribution to NATO-led efforts to empose an arms embargo against Libya, impose a no-fly zone in Libyan airspace, and protect civilians in Libya in compliance with U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973.

including electro-optic infrared and overland equipment, have changed what we’re able to provide and changed where we’re able to work.” The overland equipment mission suite (OEMS), a new addition to the Aurora, was acquired for Operation PODIUM, the Canadian Forces participation in security for the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. With the OEMS, an Aurora crew can record three live video feeds from improved electro-optic infrared (EOIR) cameras. At the end of each sortie, the resulting imagery is transmitted to the Combined Air Operations Centre in Poggio Renatico, Italy. “We’re taking all the resources we have available in theatre and using them to maximize the effect of the mission,” said Maj. Derrick Hotte, the Sigonella detachment commander on Roto 0. The Aurora detachment’s most important resource is its people, who deployed on very short notice and flew their first mission within 72 hours of arriving in Sigonella. They’ve flown every day since. “We’ve maintained a serviceability rate of over 90 per cent,” said Hotte. “That really speaks to the commitment and dedication of the maintenance staff and the team approach to how we conduct operations. All of the staff have exceeded expectations and have done a lot to bring credit to the longrange patrol aircraft community and to the Canadian Forces.”

The hidden cause: allergy or food intolerance John, age 42, recently came into the office complaining of chronic heartburn and reflux requiring a prescription drug that blocks gastric acid, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), Pariet. PPI’s are a common drug prescribed for this and is one of the top 10 prescriptions sold in Canada. I started talking to John about his diet and asked if he had any allergies. He said he did not and

then I asked him what very high. I explained symptoms of allergy that there is a long would he look list of allergy for if he had symptoms and them. that reflux, gas, Most gastritis, and people say: gallbladder hives, rashes attacks were and breathing included. problems. I also Dr. Ingrid I had him clarified that Pincott fill out our the word Naturally Healthy “Immune allergy usually System applies to a Questionnaire” which food or substance to identifies all those which the person has a symptoms that relate life-long reaction, but to allergy. He scored what I was speaking

about were sensitivities that could possibly be reversed over time. Dr. Breneman, M.D., first published the book ‘Basics of Food Allergy’ in 1978. In this book Dr. Breneman focuses on food allergy or intolerance that can be the cause of chronic disease in 50 per cent of cases or more. He lists many symptoms that he felt that were often caused by allergy. These include: asthma,

recurrent bladder infections, recurrent bronchitis, canker sores, chronic low back pain, depression, diarrhea, recurrent ear infections, eczema, fatigue, weight gain, headaches, hyperactivity, irritable bowel syndrome, joint pain and swelling, sinusitis, recurrent infections of any type and ulcerative colitis. Most conventional allergists focus the majority of their efforts

on diagnosis and treatment of allergy symptoms caused by dust, pollens, grasses, trees, flowers and other living plants and animals. These are diagnosed using skin scratch testing and then the person is desensitized to those substances using injections over the course of a year or more. Skin scratch testing is often not accurate for the diagnosis of food

intolerance. I explained to John that we identify food intolerances using the Electrodermal Method (EDS) where over 200 items are checked against the skin conductivity of an acupuncture point in response to the test substance. Once the foods are identified, he would be asked to avoid them for two months at which time he would be tested Cont. on Page 10

Success achieved, John’s feeling better From Page 8 again. Usually by then the overall allergic load on his body would be greatly reduced so that he could then add previously suspect foods back into his diet. This would then be his long term ideal diet recommendations. During the EDS testing performed by our technician, wheat and dairy came up prominently in his testing and his O type blood confirmed that these food avoidances would in fact be a good long term recommendation for him. He also showed a very high dysbiosis score in his intestinal tract. Not only do the acid inhibiting drugs

inhibit absorption of Vitamin B 12 they can also interfere with the natural ecology of the intestinal flora. This natural gut ecology is important for preventing colds and flus as well as infections with H. pylori and C.difficile bacteria. Within three months of following my dysbiosis protocol and avoiding the most common food intolerances John was feeling 100 per cent and was able to stop using the PPI’s because he had a clear endoscopy for esophagitis. Now John realizes that whenever he eats wheat or dairy his reflux gets worse. He now has some

natural remedies to help when this comes up, but mostly he is able to stick to his diet because he feels so much better. Finding alternatives to wheat and dairy were not as hard as he had suspected. As a natural side effect he is losing weight and his seasonal allergy symptoms get better every year as his total body allergy load has been greatly reduced. His family is also benefiting as they are making changes too! Dr.Ingrid Pincott, naturopathic physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at 250-286-3655 or www.DrPincott.com

From left to right: Rhonda Harper and Craig Gillis (Campbell River Daybreak Rotary), Mickey Leo (Delaware Youth Fundraiser), Bobbi Colwell (Campbell River Daybreak Rotary), Kat Eddy (Literacy for All), and Lori McKeown (The John Howard Society of North Island).

Donation accesses training Thanks to the Campbell River Daybreak Rotary Club, young people attending the Delaware Youth Internet Café will have the opportunity to take short courses related to work and education this summer. The youth identified that they need Drivers’ Licenses, Foodsafe, and First Aid courses. Daybreak Rotary donated $300 towards the cost of this training. The John Howard Society of North Island

(JHSNI) is partnering with Literacy for All, Vancouver Island Regional Library, and the Campbell River Association for Community Living to offer the Delaware Youth Internet Café pilot project. Delaware officially launched on May 10th, 2011 and since the first day has had a very strong user group of up to 20 young people between the ages of 13 - 24. The drop-in Youth Internet Café provides a safe place for youth
