VACUUM

Vacuum - Basics The definition of vacuum Vacuum is the term for air pressures which lie below normal atmospheric pressure. The vacuum values used depend on the specific application. For vacuum handling, relatively low vacuum values are sufficient.

THE SPECIFICATION OF VACUUM

Specification as a relative value. In the vacuum handling sector, the vacuum is specified in the form of a relative value, i.e. referred to the ambient pressure. These vacuum values always have a negative sign, because the ambient pressure is used as the reference point, which is defined as 0 mbar.

-1000

Vacuum -500

0

Overpressure +500 +1000

Specification as an absolute value Scientists specify a vacuum in the form of an absolute value. As reference point, in this case the absolute zero is used, i.e. the vacuum existing in space. The vacuum values are therefore always positive.

WHICH MEASUREMENT UNITS ARE USED?

Of the many units of measurement which exist for pressure, vacuum technology generally uses the units Pascal [Pa], hectoPascal [hPa],Bar [bar] e Millibar [mbar]. The conversion between Pascal and Bar is the following. 0,001 bar =1 mbar =1 hPa =100 Pa

All values in the Camozzi catalogue are specified in bar, mbar or in %. The specification as a percentage is typically used to show the relative performance of a vacuum generator, since it is unaffected by changes in the actual ambient pressure. Internationally, various other units of measurement are used. Some of these are shown in the table below.

ENERGY REQUIRED TO GENERATE VACUUM

The energy required for the generation of vacuum increases much faster than the vacuum value which is achieved. When increasing the vacuum from -600 mbar to -900 mbar, the holding force is increased by factor 1,5 while the evacuation time and the energy needed to achieve this value increases by a factor of 3! It is thus clear that the maximum achievable vacuum value is not he optimum value for vacuum handling tasks. Widely used typical vacuum values: - for air-tight surfaces (e.g. metals, plastics, etc.): from 60% to 80% vacuum (from -600 to -800 mbar). - for porous materials (e.g. cardboard, chipboard and MDF sheets, etc.): from 20% to 40% vacuum (from -200 to -400 mbar); in this range the necessary holding force is generated by increasing the suction rate of the vacuum generator and by increasing the effective area of the vacuum grippers. Important: In the catalogue, the holding forces of the suction pads are always specified at the most economical vacuum level of -600 mbar!

THE ATMOSPHERE AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE VACUUM TECHNOLOGY

The (ambient) air pressure depends on the altitude of the place where it is measured. As illustrated here beside, the pressure at sea level is 1013 mbar. At an altitude of 600 m the air pressure is 938 mbar. At an altitude of 2000 m the air pressure drops to only 763 mbar.

Ambient pressure at altitude 2000 m=763 mbar

Ambient pressure at altitude 600 m=938 mbar Ambient pressure at sea level (0 m)=1013 mbar

This pressure drop naturally affects the use of vacuum. As the air pressure drops with increasing altitude, the maximum pressure difference which can be achieved also drops, which means that the maximum possible holding force of a vacuum gripper is also reduced. For each 100 m height increase, the air pressure drops by about 12,5 mbar. A vacuum generator which achieves a vacuum of 80% ( -800 mbar) at sea level can thus generate a vacuum of only -610 mbar (80 % of the ambient air pressure of 763 mbar) at an altitude of 2000 m. The maximum possible holding force of a vacuum gripper decreases proportionally. Operation at sea level is thus the ideal situation. Important: All indications in the Camozzi catalogue refer to an ambient pressure of 1000 mbar and an ambient temperature of 20 째C.

Functioning of the main components HOW DOES A SUCTION PAD WORK?

V A C U U M

When the ambient pressure (atmospheric pressure) is higher than the pressure between the suction pad and the workpiece, the ambient air pressure presses the suction pad against the workpiece. This pressure difference is achieved by connecting the suction pad to a vacuum generator, which evacuates the air from the space between the pad and the workpiece. If the suction pad is in contact to the surface of the workpiece no air can enter it from the sides and a vacuum is generated. The holding force of the suction pads increases proportionally to the difference between the ambient pressure and the pressure inside the pad.

A VACUUM EJECTOR - PRINCIPLE FUNCTION

Ejectors generate a vacuum on the basis of the so-called Venturi principle. Compressed air enters to the ejector at A and flows through the nozzle B. This results in a pressure drop (vacuum) just behind the tip of the nozzle and air is drawn in through the vacuum inlet D. This air, and the compressed air passing through the nozzle, leaves the ejector through the silencer C.

B C A

D

Compact ejectors The compact ejectors are also single-stage ejectors, but they also have two valves for direct control of functions “grip” and “blow off”. In addition, these ejectors are also available with vacuum switches or system monitoring and regulation. The combination of the “grip” valve and a vacuum switch permits implementation of an automatic air-saving function which ensures that compressed air is consumed only when the vacuum measured by the vacuum switch drops below a value defined by the customer. The advantages of compact ejectors are their compact design, which results in lower space requirements and a lower weight, combined with the many integrated functions.

Multi stage ejectors Besides single-stage ejectors, there are ejectors which have several Venturi nozzles arranged in series. These multi-stage ejectors have a higher suction capacity than single-stage ejectors.

A VACUUM PUMP - PRINCIPLE FUNCTION

A vacuum pump contains an eccentrically mounted impeller with vanes which seal off parts of the cylindrical space in which the impeller turns. These vanes are pressed against the walls of the internal space by centrifugal force. Due to the eccentric mounting of the impeller, the spaces between the vanes have different volumes. The large volume of space B permits the incoming air to expand, which results in a pressure drop. In space C the volume is smaller and the air in this space is compressed.

Principle of operation of a vacuum pump

V A C U U M

B

C

Pumps generate a very high vacuum and provide, depending on the type, suction capacities which can be very high.

A VACUUM BLOWER - PRINCIPLE FUNCTION

In a vacuum pump, the rotating blades (A) draw air in from the outside and accelerate and compress it. This means that kinetic energy is transferred from the impeller to the air. Since the air is pulled in by the blades, a vacuum is created at the inlet side (B). The compressed air leaves the pump through the outlet (C).

Principle of operation of a vacuum blower

Vacuum pumps have a high suction capacity, but the vacuum value is not as good as those generated by ejectors and vacuum pumps.

A

B

Important: The suction capacity of all vacuum generators is specified in l/min or m 3/h. These specifications refer to an ambient pressure of 1000 mbar and to an ambient temperature of 20 째C.

VACUUM SWITCHES - PRINCIPLE FUNCTION

Vacuum switches operate mechanically, pneumatically or electronically. In the mechanical and pneumatic versions, a diaphragm reacts to changes in the air pressure and actuates a mechanical switch or a valve. In the electronic version, the pressure is measured by means of a piezoresistive sensor and an electrical, digital (on/off) output signal is generated. It is also possible to generate an electrical analogue signal which is proportional to the measured pressure.

The company reserves the right to vary models and dimensions without notice. These products are designed for industrial applications and are not suitable for sale to the general public.

Vacuum switches can be used to monitor and control processes. Most vacuum switches permit adjustment of the switching point, and some also permit adjustment of the hysteresis.

Calculation examples SYSTEM DESIGN - THE PROCEDURE

V A C U U M

In this section the design procedure is described for a complete system step by step. The below exercise is based on a typical design example.

7. Vacuum switch 6. Solenoid valves 5. Vacuum generator 4. Vacuum hose 3. Mounting elements 2. Suction pads 1. Calculation of the forces

Flowchart for system design The calculations in the example are based on the following data: WORKPIECE

HANDLING SYSTEM

Material: steel sheets, stacked on a pallet Surface: smooth, flat, dry Dimensions: length: max.2500 mm width: max.1250 mm thickness: max.2,5 mm weight: circa 60 kg

System used: Available compressed air supply: Control voltage: Transfer procedure: Max. acceleration values: Cycle time: Planned times:

portal transfer unit 8 bar 24 V DC horizontal - horizontal X and Y axes: 5 m/s 2 Z axis: 5 m/s 2 30 s for picking up: <1s for releasing: <1s

CALCULATING THE WEIGHT OF THE WORKPIECE

For all subsequent calculations, it is important to know the mass of the workpiece to be handled. This can be calculated with the following formula:

Mass m [kg ]:m = L x B x H x ρ L = length [m] B = width [m] H = heigth [m] ρ = density [kg/m 3] Example: m = 2,5 x 1,25 x 0,0025 x 7850 m = 61,33 kg

FORCES - HOW HIGH FORCES DO THE SUCTION PADS HAVE TO SUPPORT?

In order to determine the necessary holding forces, the above mass calculation is needed. In addition, the suction pads must be capable of handling the acceleration forces which, in a fully automatic system, are by no means negligible. In order to simplify the calculation, the three most important and most frequent load cases are shown graphically and described below.

Important: In the following simplified representations of the load cases I, II and III, the worst case with the highest theoretical holding force must always be used for the subsequent calculations.

LOAD CASE I: HORIZONTAL SUCTION PADS, VERTICAL FORCE F TH = theoretical holding force [N] m = mass [kg] g = acceleration due to gravity [9,81 m/s 2] a = system acceleration [m/s 2] (remember to include the “emergency off” situation!) S = safety factor (minimum value 1,5; for critical, inhomogeneous or porous materials or rough surfaces 2,0 or higher)

The suction pads are placed on a horizontal workpiece which is to be lifted vertically.

Example: F TH = 61,33 x (9,81 +5)x 1,5 F TH = 1363 N

HOW TO SELECT THE SUCTION PADS

V A C U U M

The suction pads are normally selected on the basis of the following criteria: Operating conditions: the operating conditions (single or multiple shift operation, expected lifetime, aggressive surroundings, temperature etc.) at the point of use are decisive for the selection of the suction pads. Material: Please select the best material for the suction pads from the detailed table in chapter 2.

Surface: depending on the surface of the handled workpieces, certain suction-pad versions may be more suitable. The product range includes flat and bellows suction pads.

Example: In this example, where steel sheets are to be handled, we will use the flat suction pads, Mod. VTCF in NBR. This is the best and most efficient solution for the handling of smooth, flat workpieces. The data for this suction pad type can be found on the related pages in chapter 2. Calculation of the suction force F S [N] F S = F TH /n F S = suction force F TH = theoretical force n = number of suction pads Example: For medium sized (2500 x 1250 mm) steel sheets, normally 6 to 8 suction pads would be used. The most important criterion for deciding the number of suction pads in this example, is the flexing of the steel sheet during transport.

Calculation of the suction force F S [N] F S = 1822/6

F S = 304 N

According to the Technical Data as shown on page 2.00.004 for Series VTCF, 6 pcs. of suction pads Mod. VTCF-0950N are needed with a suction force of 340 N each. F S = 1822/8

F S = 228 N

According to the Technical Data as shown on page 2.00.004 for Series VTCF, 8 pcs. of suction pads Mod. VTCF-800N are needed with a suction force of 260 N each. In this example we decide to use 6 pcs. of suction pads Mod. VTCF-950N since this number is sufficient and helps to keep the costs down. Important: • The load which each suction pad can carry is shown in the table Technical Data for each suction-pad type in chapter 2. • The load-carrying capacity of the suction pad must always be greater than the calculated value. 1.00 008

SELECTION OF THE MOUNTING ELEMENTS

V A C U U M

Normally, the manner in which the suction pads are mounted is defined to meet the customer’s needs. However, there may be special reasons which make a specific mounting element mandatory in certain cases: Uneven or sloping surfaces The suction pad must be able to adapt itself to the slope: > flexible nipple NPF Different heights or thicknesses The suction pads must be spring-mounted in order to compensate for varying heights: > spring plunger Example: In this example the steel sheets are stacked on a pallet. If the sheets are larger than the pallet, they may hang down at the ends. This means that the suction pads must be able to compensate for considerable height differences and slope angles. We decide to use: Spring plunger Mod. NPM-FM-1/4-75 We need the largest possible stroke to cope with the hanging ends of the steel sheets. The 1/4 thread is needed for connection to the flexible nipple. Flexible nipple Mod. NPF Optimum flexibility for inclined workpiece surfaces. Check valves Mod. VNV These are used on vacuum gripper systems containing multiple suction pads in order to shut off indivual suction pads which are not covered by the workpiece, (when handling work pieces of different sizes).

Note: When selecting the mounting elements, please make sure that these can be screwed onto the suction pads, i.e. that they have threads of the same size. Also note the load-carrying capacities of the mounting elements. The various mounting elements and their technical data can be found in chapter 3.

SELECTION OF VACUUM HOSES

The size of the vacuum hose must match the suction pads which are used. Recommendations for the cross-sectional size of the vacuum hose can be found in the table Technical Data in chapter 2. The various hoses are shown in the General Catalogue page 7.08.009. Example: For exampe, from the table with Technical Data we choose a TRN 8/6 hose in polyammide.

CALCULATION VACUUM GENERATORS

Based upon our experience and upon the values measured during the system design, we recommend to choose the vacuum generator depending on the diameter of the suction pad, according to the table below:

REQUIRED SUCTION RATE AS A FUNCTION OF THE SUCTION PAD DIAMETER Suction pad Ă˜ up to 20 mm up to 40 mm up to 60 mm up to 90 mm up to 120 mm

Required suction rate Vs 0,17 m 3/h 2,83 l/min 0,35 m 3/h 5,83 l/min 0,5 m 3/h 8,3 l/min 0,75 m 3/h 12,7 l/min 1 m 3/h 16,6 l/min

Note: The indicated values apply to all types of vacuum generators. The recommended suction rate is for a single suction pad and is valid only for smooth, air-tight surfaces. For porous surfaces we recommend the execution of a suitable test before selection of the vacuum generator. Calculation of the required suction rate V [m 3/h, l/min] V = n x VS n = number of suction pads V S = required suction rate for a single suction pad [m 3/h, l/min] The suction rate values of the different vacuum generators can be found in the table Technical Data for each vacuum generator in chapter 4.

Example: V = 6 x 16,6 V = 99,6 l/min We choose a compact ejector Mod. VEC-20 with a suction rate of 116 l/min.

SELECTION OF VACUUM SWITCHES

The following functions are available: • adjustable switching point • fixed or adjustable hysteresis • digital and/or analog output signals • status LED • display with keypad • connection with M5 Female thread, G1/8 Male, flange or plug-in tube The various versions and their technical data can be found in chapter 6.

V A C U U M

Vacuum switches and pressure gauges are normally selected on the basis of the functions required in the application and on the switching frequency.

Example: • vacuum switch SWD-V00-PA with digital display, adjustable hysteresis (already integrated into the compact ejector) • pressure gauge.

SELECTION OF THE VACUUM SWITCHES AND PRESSURE GAUGES

Even if you are confident that the results of the system-design work are correct, you should still carry out tests with original workpieces to be on the safe side. However, the theoretical system design will give you a good idea of the general parameters for the intended application.

Suction pads

P A D S

Suction pads are components used in situations where objects (parts, packaging materials, etc.) need to be lifted, transported, turned or any other movement. Since these components are in direct contact with the object, their technical design, shape and material composition are of great importance. Based upon their shape, the suction pads can be divided into: - Flat suction pads - Bellows suction pads - Oval suction pads

From diameter 60 mm and up, a mounting plate is vulkanised into the rubber part to which the nipple should be mounted. The suction pads can also be ordered separately without nipples as spare parts. The suction pads Series VTCF are generally used for handling of objects with smooth or slightly curved surfaces such as sheets of different materials, extruded profiles, cardboard boxes, plastic components, wood panels etc. Applications -Handling of flat parts with smooth or slightly rough surfaces -Version in silicone for the handling of parts at high temperatures.

Advantages Wide range of diameters, all available in materials NBR or Silicone. Low profile, with reduced intrinsic volume which enables short cycle times and/or the use of smaller vacuum generators.

Compact design for good resistance towards transversal forces at high accelerations, thus suitable for applications with fast movements. Supports on the bottom of the suction pad which reduce the risk for permanent deformation of thin-walled objects.

SUCTION PADS - SOME DEFINITIONS

When designing a vacuum circuit and selecting suitable suction pads it is necessary to follow certain calculations to select each individual component in a correct way. Listed below is a summary of the most common data to take into consideration.

THEORETICAL SUCTION FORCE

Theoretical force (N) at a -0,6 bar measured at sea level. Since this is a theoretical value, it is necessary to reduce this value by adding a safety factor to compensate for friction or loss of vacuum, depending on the application (from rough workpiece surface or porous material etc.)

F TH

FG

LATERAL FORCE

INTERNAL VOLUME

The measured value in N at a vacuum of -0,6 bar on a dry or oily, flat and smooth workpiece surface. These values do not include a safety factor.

FR

This is used to calculate the total volume of the gripper system. With this value, it is also possible to calculate the evacuation time

FG

MINIMUM WORKPIECE CURVATURE RADIUS

SUCTION PAD STROKE

This specifies the minimum radius at which the workpiece can be gripped securely by the suction pad.

Corsa ventosa

This is the lifting effect which occurs during evacuation of a bellows type suction pad.

R

SUCTION PAD MATERIAL SELECTION

Applications Food Oily parts Slight marking of workpieces For high temperatures For low temperatures Very smooth surfaces (glass) Very rough surfaces (wood, stone)

SELECTION AND CONFIGURATION Planning check-list for selection of suction pads What are the workpiece dimensions and weight?

This is important information to select the suction pad dimensioning (see technical information) and also for the design of the dust filter. Temperature is important to select the suction pad material. It determines the structure, the type and the suction pad version This data is important for the dimensioning and plays a part in the calculations (for instance the vacuum generator suction capacity calculation); (see the technical information). This is important for the dimensioning and design of the suction force, together with the related calculations (for instance the suction capacity and the moment of inertia); (see the technical information). This data is important to establish the dimension and the suction force calculation.

What is the maximum acceleration during handling?

Which kind of handling is needed (moving, slewing, turning over)?

How is the workpiece surface (rough, structured, smooth)? Could the workpiece be dirty? If so, what kind of dirt? What is the highest workpiece temperature? Is an accurate gripping/placing/positionining required? What is the cycle time?

This is important data for the suction force calculation and to establish the required suction force and number of suction pads, (see technical information). It determines the kind of suction pad (material, shape, dimensions).

Accessories for suction pads

A C C E S S O R I E S

Camozzi offers a range of accessories necessary to create complete gripping systems There are different alternatives to integrate the suction pads into the system depending on the conditions in combination with the requirements. Following accessories are included in the most common solutions: - Flexible suction pad mountings - Spring plungers - Check valves

3.03

Flexible suction pad mountings Series NPF

This flexible suction pad mounting has a rubber connection between the two metallic parts, which allows it to tilt in all directions in order to obtain a better orientation to the suction pad towards the workpiece. Especially if this is slightly angled.

Spring plungers Series NPM - NPR (non rotating)

A C C E S S O R I E S

The spring plungers are used in situations where significant height differences of the workpieces have to be compensated for. The spring provides furthermore a gentle approach towards the workpiece without further complex controls in fully automated systems, which is important when handling sensitive workpieces.

3.08

Check valves Series VNV

The check valves Series VNV are mainly used on vacuum gripper sytems containing multiple suction pads in order to shut off individual suction pads which are not covered or accidentally pulled away from the workpiece. In this way the gripper system can operate correctly maintaining the vacuum level necessary for the application

A C C E S S O R I E S

Flexible suction pad mountings Series NPF The flexible suction pad mounting Series NPF permit a better adaptation between the suction pad and the workpiece due to its ability in all directions, (up to 12). Application - Suitable to use in conjunction with larger flat suction pads on bigger workpieces like metal or wooden sheets which are either inclined or have a tendency to sag during the lifting operation or simply have a slightly irregular shape. They can also be used in combination with spring plungers for further compensation in height if needed.

Advantages Flexible in all directions for optimal adaptation to the workpiece (up to 12°) Low pivoting point which reduces the wear on the suction pad. Rubber covered (vulcanised) metal connection for heavy loads. The vulcanisation provides perfect sealing and automatic return to neutral position.

Compact ejectors Series VEM One of the most important features of the Compact ejector Series VEM is the extreme compactness. This compactness and low weight makes them suitable for “dynamic applications such as robots, when assembled directly on the part in motion (gripper head etc.) The Compact ejectors Series VEM have integrated suction-and blow off valves together with a monitoring system (vacuum switch). With these it is therefore possible to command suction and blow-off individually without using external valves. The Compact ejectors Series VEM are often used in completely automatic handling systems. For cables and connectors see page 4.00.016

Once reached the preset vacuum value, the ejector is shut OFF. The ejector remains OFF as long as the vacuum value lies within the set hysteresis range, (the ejector consumes no compressed air in this phase). If the vacuum level drops (e.g. due to a leakage in the vacuum system) below the preset limit value, the ejector is re-activated (vacuum on) by the electronic control circuit until the preset vacuum value is reached again. NB The compact ejectors with air-saving system are delivered complete with connectors and cables.
