LSC matches return to the Aggie Gym First Serve

The Aggies will be traveling to Abilene Christian possibly for the last time on Saturday morning to play two matches in Moody Coliseum. First up for CU will be ACU who will be moving to the Southland Conference and NCAA Division I. Last season, Cameron was swept in their two regular season match ups with the Wildcats. In the Lone Star Conference Tournament, Cameron pushed ACU to a fifth set but would fall in a tough battle to end their 2011 season. Since their first meeting in 1988, Abilene Christian leads the overall series 10-31 over Cameron and has taken every match since the 2001 season. However, the Wildcats are currently sitting in last place in the LSC standings with a 1-6 record and are in need of a win to stay in the tournament race. Cameron fell to eight place in the conference standings with a 2-6 record after their loss to Midwestern State (3-1) on Tuesday at the Aggie Gym. A win over the Wildcats will snap an 11 year streak and set the pace for the LSC Tournament in November.

Last time out

The Aggies were upset at the Aggie Gym on Tuesday night against nearby rival Midwestern State (3-1). Cameron started off the night by winning set one 25-19, but could not hold of the Mustang attack, losing set two 25-19, set three 25-18, and, though they fought hard and had a chance, lost set four 25-23. In the first set the Aggies came out firing with Kathryn Evans and Rebeeca Green both perfect with six kills each. The team had a combined hitting percentage of .429 with 16 kills and only one error through one. Additionally, CU went on a 14-5

rally to win set one. The second set was back in forth with no team holding more than a two point lead up to the 17-17 mark. MSU then went on an 8-2 run that the Aggies could not come back from. The third set was similar except Cameron was able to get a couple three point leads. After a 14-14 tie, the Mustangs mounted an 11-4 run to end the set. CU bounced back and started set four with a 15-9 lead, but let MSU get back in, trimming the Aggie lead to 21-20. After two Aggie points, the Mustangs added a late five point rally to end the set and the match.

Evans Named LSC Offensive Player of the Week

Cameron University earns its first individual award of the season as freshman Kathryn Evans was recognized by the Lone Star Conference as an Offensive Player of the Week. Evans, a native of Pearland, Texas, broke her career high in kills twice this past week. The first was at Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 25 where she had 22 kills. To out-do herself she came back on Saturday Sept. 29 to record a now career high of 24 kills against St. Mary’s (TX). This last week Evans has had a total of 68 kills while averaging four kills a set on a .198 hitting percentage in four games for the Aggies. Head coach Doug Tabbert was pleased with the week his young hitter had and how she has improved as the season develops. “She did a good job of taking care of the ball and was pretty consistent. She took some big swings, minimized her errors, and put a good set of numbers together,” said Tabbert. “She is learning to limit her errors, still makes some unforced ones once in a while, but she is learning when she has a chance to make a big swing and when she needs to hold back a little bit and keep the ball in play. That is a part of her game that has really developed.”

The 2011 season was head coach Douglas Tabbert’s first season at Cameron University. Tabbert took a team picked 11th in the conference preseason polls to a their first Lone Star Conference Tournament birth in three years as the sixth seed.
