SFL’S GREATEST GAMES

#10

28

January 4, 2014 Little did we know it was a sign that the tables were turning on New York. The eventual Winter 2013 champs took down the Summer 2013 title winners with 20 straight points in the second half, after falling behind 28-14, thanks in big part to 6 INT’s thrown by Joseph Redfeather and a near-perfect day from Kevin Walker.

#9

47

44

July 7, 2013 Yuya Aiba had 287 receiving yards and 3 TD’s. Freeman Goodspeed had 270 receiving yards and 3 TD’s. The two teams combined to pass for 977 passing yards in the first SFL game in which two teams scored 40+ points. 3 of the other 5 games of that nature cracked the top ten list.

#8

29

27

August 3, 2013 The Rollers took their first lead (since pulling ahead 7-3) on a Rocco Marconi pass with 1:14 remaining only to allow the Renegades to complete a big pass downfield, allowing OKC to bleed the clock and kick a game-winning field goal as time expired. Pete Bruschi’s dominance against the Rollers was only just beginning.

#7

40

February 10, 2014 In one of the most epic back-and-forth showdowns ever, Dallas and Grand Rapids went through 7 lead changes in the 2nd half, with the Rollers getting the last laugh on Bobby Vesacaro’s 4th TD. Rocco Marconi threw 5 TD’s and 0 INT’s in the contest and Dallas lost despite 20 1st-quarter points and 263 rec. yards from Scott King.

June 15, 2013 The Dallas Stars and the New York Knights kicked off the history of the Simulation Football League with a dramatic 26-21 finish in Dallas. The Stars picked off eventual-MVP Joseph Redfeather in the final minute to clinch the victory and usher in a new level of Simulation Football.

September 1, 2013 Drama follows the Renegades wherever they’re playing. The semi-final match up with the Renegades and Bulldogs was the first official overtime game in SFL history and it all came about thanks to a missed San Francisco extra point. OKC won the game in OT and advanced to their first-ever SFL Championship Game.

#2

37

31

March 10, 2014 In another classic matchup between Grand Rapids and Oklahoma City, the Rollers converted a fourth-down miracle to force overtime, only to have their playoff hopes ripped away by Oklahoma City in the final minutes. The Rollers have lost all four meetings to OKC, two by 3 points or less and this meeting in OT.

#1

45

41

September 10, 2013 The first-ever SFL Championship Game was one no one involved in the league will ever forget. Tied at 24, New York returned a fumbled punt return for a touchdown as time expired in the first half. Three touchdowns were scored in the final two minutes - including a fourth-down pass from Joseph Redfeather to Freeman Goodspeed.

February 1, 2014 Having a star kicker has never made more of a difference and Orlando’s win in Kailua may have been the turning point on their championship run. Kailua missed a field goal in the final minutes of regulation and than again in overtime, while Orlando hit a field goal with 0:14 left in the 4th and than again in OT for victory.

July 14, 2013 There’s nothing like the Walsh Bowl and the first SFL Walsh Bowl was one to remember. Down 27-17 at the half, Orlando rattled off 21 straight points to take a 38-27 advantage only to give up 21 straight points in the fourth quarter and fall back behind by ten. Since then, Orlando has won two out of three meetings.

OVERVIEW The Baltimore Crabs are the first-ever expansion team in SFL history and they have been the hot topic of conversation since the announcement. The Crabs have built up the biggest staff in league history, which consists of two coordinators and - led by owner Tim Johnston - has taken league promotion to new levels. How they will play on the field, has yet to be seen. Their secondary should contend with Oklahoma City’s as best in the league by season’s end. The Crabs invested heavily in Running Back Elliot Snider and Outside Linebacker Joe Dazzo. The Crabs are a true expansion team and brought in all their own players to try to win a SFL title. Fun fact: Joe Dazzo and his son, quarterback Mike Dazzo, become the first father-son tandem on the same team in professional football history.

CRABS’ STAFF Owner Tim Johnston is the owner of the CAG NFL league and the Crabs are truly the CAG’s SFL organization. From top to bottom, the CAG league has gotten fully involved with the Crabs and the SFL from bronze players all the way up to Johnston. Thomas Paterniti and Benjamin Scheiner will be handling the on-the-field product, while Johnston is focused on getting the word out about the Crabs and running the most professional sim league franchise ever formed.

OVERVIEW The Dallas Stars are coming off their first playoff appearance in franchise history, but owner Ronnie Nickens is still seeking his first playoff victory. The Stars have been a team that has historically struggled on the road and for the team to get over the hump, they must get those elusive victories away from raucous Miller/Gold Stadium. Zach Elpheage was signed this off-season to help the defensive woes after Dallas finished 6th or dead last in the main defensive categories in the winter. Unfortunately for Dallas, locking up running back Johnny English long-term meant the team parted ways with strong safety Ahmad Arrington. If the defense can play the way they played in the second half of the winter, the Stars will be a championship contender.

STARS’ STAFF Owner Ronnie Nickens formerly owned the Cleveland Stallions of the WAFL and lives in the Cleveland area. Nickens - in his three complete sim seasons in the WAFL/SFL has made one postseason appearance. His style is old school and it has given teams fits. Nickens has had terrible luck with injuries in the past and without that bug, his ground and pound/play action game could thrive like no other.

OVERVIEW Grand Rapids is hoping that the addition of Defensive Coordinator Logan Foster and a flurry of off-season activity can launch the Rollers into the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Grand Rapids will have 7 defensive stars following a defensive effort that was lackluster last season and did not sign any star wide receivers - the first team to ever take that risk. The confidence in the passing game has been fully given to Tight End Marcus Campbell, Rocco Marconi’s only downfield weapon after Vesacaro, Miller and Doleman were all let go or traded. How the defense will come together will be the key to the Rollers season. The addition of Jeb Gatlin was the most important addition to the unit, reuniting the Gatlin brothers. How others fit into their new roles is the big question.

ROLLERS’ STAFF Owner Eric Walsh has been with the WAFL/SFL from the very beginning and was a part of historical Walsh Bowl I, although, on the wrong side of history. Walsh enjoyed success with the Las Vegas Diablos before moving operations back to his hometown of Michigan. Logan Foster is the newest addition to the front office. Both owners haven’t enjoyed much sim success in the past, but are hoping to put their heads together to turn the Rollers into championship contenders.

OVERVIEW The Kailua Wyverns made their first trip to the playoffs this past winter, but fell hard to the Oklahoma City Renegades. Kailua will be the second-youngest team in the league this year, with three rookies, including running back Noel Kreiss, who replaces Park HeeChul (now in New York). Historically, the Wyverns’ inability to get the running game going has hurt this team. Sebastian Brock and Lawrence Kirkland joined Nathaniel Graison as bronze stars who have gotten big investments from Walsh. With those three locked in and confidence in Ohno Matsumoto for the first time, the Wyverns rookies will make the difference this year. Kailua became the second team to invest money in a kicker (Jun Kazunari) and also took a cornerback (Koyama Shigeaki) in the Rookie Draft.

WYVERNS’ STAFF Owner Jaimie Walsh started with Irvine-led sim football projects in 2012, when the Osaka Shoguns were born. They were an instant and big success in their one and only completed season. Walsh has always brought the Asian flair and has historically done a tremendous job of bringing in new, fresh talent. She’s done more with less and has easily the best chance of winning a title this year. She is known as being a “players’ owner” and for treating players with trust and fairness.

OVERVIEW This off-season, the New York Knights moved back to owner Erik Barkley’s market: the Buffalo market. The Knights’ and Barkley’s popularity could push the Knights into the spotlight there, instead of in the shadows of The Big Apple. On the field, the Knights cleaned house after a lackluster 3-5 season that saw the offense struggle to produce consistently. For the first time, New York will actually have a running game after New York traded for Park HeeChul this off-season. The Knights also traded away Joseph Redfeather, Freeman Goodspeed and Jeb Gatlin. In their place will be Wes St. Clair, Donald Miller and Rookie Tight End Brock Studwell. The defense returns everyone but Gatlin and should be in good shape. We’ll see if Barkley’s blowup favors or hinders the Knights’ future.

KNIGHTS’ STAFF Owner Erik Barkley started in the WAFL with the Syracuse Six Nations. The Queen City Corsairs and the Boston Maulers were big rivals in the strongest form of the WAFL (the Maulers were owned by AJ Caswell) but Caswell and Barkley joined forces midway through Barkley’s first season in NYC. Caswell and Barkley are the “mad scientists” of the SFL and aren’t afraid to take a risk and make some moves. The Knights have truly wiped the slate clean heading into the summer.

OVERVIEW The Oklahoma City Renegades have been to the Championship Game two straight seasons and have suffered two bitter defeats. The team has been a winner and the only one in league history to have two-consecutive above-.500 seasons but has yet to win the big prize. The Renegades are known for having one of the league’s best, consistent and most punishing defense. The OKC Renegades have had a wackier off-season than most, deciding to cut Wes St. Clair only to see New York scoop up St. Clair after OKC re-submitted an offer to him. OKC thought they had signed Ted Killings to a gold deal, only to be overruled by the league after the contract was signed. Based around their running game and tremendous secondary, if OKC can get back to football, the Renegades could prove lethal.

RENEGADES’ STAFF Owner Michael Irvine watched from afar as his son, Cameron, built his sim empire. He decided to get involved in 2012, taking over a troubled Stirling Surge franchise. He has been one of the SFL’s most devoted and outspoken owners and is desperately trying to find an offensive gameplan that will work around Pete Bruschi. He lives in the small town of Kiowa, Oklahoma, where new sidewalks, the price of milk and moving cattle are the towns trending topics and where the WAFL began in June 2011.

OVERVIEW The Orlando Intimidators enjoyed a crazy amount of success last season, after Kevin Walker and the Orlando offense got things going. Minus an ugly win in Oklahoma City, Orlando scored 41 points or more in their final four games of the regular season. Walsh plans to take the opposite approach than New York did after a winning title, as he’s returned most of his title team. Kevin Walker has been the most efficient silver quarterback this league has seen and he now has four weapons to throw to with the addition of rookie Thomas Gunner. With the loss of Marcus Dorsett, Orlando has no star corners - which is a concern - but their offense might be so good it wont even matter. Until anyone can prove they can stop Orlando, the Intimidators are still the team to beat in the SFL.

INTIMIDATORS’ STAFF Owner Kyle Walsh has always been the most stable owner throughout WAFL/SFL history. Walsh helped Irvine build the SFL when it was originally a test idea to help better shape the WAFL model. His leadership and guidance and his obsession to win titles are just a few reasons why his teams and the SFL are such a big success today. Walsh lives hours from Orlando and has helped, finally, bring successful professional football to the Orlando market.

OVERVIEW The San Francisco Bulldogs made a valiant effort to get back to the postseason last year, but fell short twice by the same score: 13-16. Two things have limited San Francisco’s success in the past: quarterback play and a lack of pulling-the-trigger when changes need to be made. Mr. Holder addressed both those issues this off-season, which has Bulldog fans extremely optimistic. San Francisco made the biggest move in franchise history when they acquired Joseph Redfeather and Freeman Goodspeed in a trade with the New York Knights. That trade helped keep gold star receiver James Cooley happy. Redfeather-Cooley will become the first ever Gold-Gold passing hookup in league history. The Bulldogs also were able to retain Gage Wilson and Jordan Gray, adding Ahmad Arrington to what could be a lethal defense.

BULLDOGS’ STAFF Owner Daley Holder operates the Bulldogs in the shadows. He’s not outspoken and he calmly his built a championship-caliber team this off-season, with the usual questions at running back with Michael Urban. Holder, who hails from New York, decided to go west coast when placing a team in NYC was unavailable. He was in the process of completing one of the most fantastic franchise transformations in 2013 when he owned the St. Louis Hornets of the WAFL, but his run for a title then was cut short.
