Year 12 Formal Last Saturday night the Year 12 Formal took place at ‘Leonda by the Yarra’. As always, the evening was a highlight of the School year, especially for the students and their partners. It was a perfect venue where we were able to relax and share a very enjoyable meal and evening with our senior students. It was also very pleasing to see so many staff attend the event to support the students. The boys managed the occasion with aplomb and proved to be outstanding hosts to their guests and were most respectful of the teachers who were there on the night. I am very grateful to Ms Jan Sangster, who did an enormous amount of work to ensure such a successful night.

Year 10 BODi Day Year 10 boys will be involved in a By Our Deeds Inquiry (BODi) Day next Wednesday. The BODi Days are becoming a key component of our wellbeing program and are also run at Years 7 and 11. The Year 10 boys will be involved in two workshops on the day, ‘Show Some Respect’ and ‘Breaking the Man Code’. It promises to be a powerful and thought-provoking day for the boys. Please contact your son’s Head of House if you would like more information about the day.

Premier’s VCE Awards 2018 On Monday 3 June, Mrs Suzanne Jack and Ms Katrina Massey attended the 2018 Premier’s VCE Awards Ceremony at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. This is an annual event that recognises the outstanding results of VCE students of the previous year. Congratulations to the following students from Camberwell Grammar School who received a Premier’s VCE Award for their 2018 studies: • Jake Brown (Biology) • Oliver Papillo (Global Politics) Results such as these reflect very positively on the efforts made by students and teachers, not just in the VCE years but in all years of schooling. The Premier’s VCE Awards Ceremony not only acknowledges the outstanding results of individual students but also pays tribute to teachers and parents who play an invaluable role in supporting and encouraging students during the VCE studies.

Examinations All of our students have now completed their major assessments and examinations for this semester, including our Year 12 students, who sat the GAT examination. I hope that our students enjoyed these opportunities to display their learning and also to discover areas for their own improvement. Next Tuesday 25 June, Semester 2 officially begins, and changes to units and teachers will occur during that week.

After-School French DELF Preparation Courses Term 3 - Enrolment Date Extended The Alliance Française de Melbourne will run a preparation course for the internationally recognised DELF Junior/Scolaire French examination (Diplôme Elémentaire de Langue Française) next term at Camberwell Grammar School. The Diploma is aimed at secondary school students who learn French as a foreign language. It evaluates a student’s ability to communicate in French and comprises four sections: listening and reading comprehension, writing and speaking. There are four basic levels of achievement, from A1, A2 (basic-level users) and B1, B2 (independent users), with the B2 level enabling students to access schools and universities in France and Francophone countries. The results are valid for life and are an asset to one’s personal resume. For further information about the DELF diplomas, click here. The course will run on Tuesdays from 3.45pm to 5.15pm at Camberwell Grammar School for 10 weeks.

Expression of Interest – Galápagos and Amazon Tour, September 2020 After a very successful first tour in 2018, we are delighted to be proposing a School Tour to the Galápagos Islands and the Amazon in September 2020 and are looking to gauge interest in this Tour. This event will appeal to students with an interest in the biological sciences and natural history. The Galápagos Islands feature highly on travellers’ top places to visit during their lifetime, and with good reason. Located 1000 km off the western coast of South America, this remote archipelago hosts an amazing array of animal and plant life. The islands are home to some of the most unique animals in the world, many of which are not found anywhere else on the planet. Because they have not been hunted, these animals have a legendary lack fear towards humans; making this a wonderful place to really appreciate fauna up close. This remote archipelago is a land of stark volcanic formations, cactus forests, lush green highlands, turquoise bays and tropical beaches. Galápagos also hosts a rich underwater world to explore, teeming with abundant and varied aquatic life. Additionally, we will travel to a section of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest for a 3-day/2-night experience based at the Inkaterra Guides Field Station. This is truly an incredible opportunity for boys with an interest in the natural world and scientific discovery to embark on a journey of a lifetime that will reap benefits far beyond the usual curriculum. The touring party is led by three experienced educators and tour leaders: Mr Marcus Jones, Mr Roger Devine and Mr Howard Kelly (Organiser). Please click here for full details. This art exhibition advertised last week is quite incredible. Congratulations to all the boys and support staff who featured. We are incredibly fortunate to have such an impressive program available for the boys. For this project, Middle School artists have explored, developed and resolved a series of two and three dimensional artworks that respond to the idea or concept of ‘Something Special’. Artists were asked to reflect upon imagery, subject matter or personal experiences that are special to them and, to also contribute a photograph of themselves with something special for inclusion in the collaborative Photographic Portrait Collage. The results were incredible. The Camberwell Grammar School Community is invited to view the exhibition in the David Williams Gallery, Lower Ground floor of the McDonald Building from Monday 17 June to Friday 19 July between 8.00am to 5.30pm weekdays. For further information please contact Mr David Williamson, Head of Art and Design at djw@cgs.vic.edu.au. A flyer for the exhibition is attached here.

Cross Country Congratulations to the following boys on their 3rd Place in the U15 Victorian All Schools Cross Country Championships: • Jack Dobbyn (Year 8) • Elliot Fry (Year 8) • Matthew Treagus (Year 7) • Marcus Liew (Year 8)

Middle School Swimming Carnival The Middle School House Swimming Carnival will take place next Friday 28 June. • Year 6/7 - Period 2-3 • Year 8 - Period 4-5 Parents are invited to observe on the mezzanine floor outside the strength and conditioning facility. Please be assured that whilst it is cold outside, the pool vicinity is very warm. Many thanks to Mr Charlie Lockwood and Mr Nic Campbell for their efforts in planning this annual event.

Year 6 Round Robin at Trinity Congratulations to our Year 6 Boys who represented CGS at Trinity this afternoon. The opportunity to represent the School always brings out that extra edge and I look forward to watching this event on a regular basis next year.

The Amazing Adventures of Superstan

Student Free Day

Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s Superstan - a caped crusader fighting for truth, freedom and justice with his super powers, super tights and the strength to lead the citizens of Megaville in a pantomime that will leave you laughing out loud. The boys in Years 3, 4 and 5 have spent an exciting week in the Middleton Theatre developing their characters in preparation for the Junior School musical production The Amazing Adventures of Superstan. In rehearsal, the boys are enjoying learning about stagecraft as the show comes together with storyline, set, lighting, props, sound, costumes, make-up and applause. Superstan opens next Tuesday 25 June with a 1.00pm matinee performance followed by evening performances on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 June. Tickets are selling fast so if you want a seat at the best show in town, make sure you book your ticket. Click here to book.

Footy Day 28 June Let’s celebrate half time on the last day of Term by wearing team colours, playing kick-to-kick and having a treat! Boys can wear sports uniform to and from School and bring their team footy gear (jumper, beanie, cap, scarf or favourite soccer or basketball team top) to be worn at lunchtime. Friends of Norge will provide a sausage sizzle and cupcakes for lunch. Senior School boys from the First XVIII will join us for lunch and then accompany the boys over to the JTO for football drills and skills instead of the normal lunch play session. A letter and sausage sizzle order form has gone home in your son’s Diary. If you have mislaid this, please ring the Junior School office for a replacement. This is a wonderful way to finish the Term and the half way mark of the year.

Sport

Sport has finished for most teams for Term 2. It will resume again for the final three weeks of the Winter season from Tuesday 16 July. A reminder that some teams continue to train and play, so students should liaise with the teacher in charge of their team. This is particularly relevant to Baseball and Firsts teams. Baseball has fixtures scheduled on Saturdays 22 and 29 June and Saturday 13 July. Congratulations to Tom Bowers (Year 11), who finished 4th in the 2019 Victorian All Schools Cross Country Championships last weekend and, as a result, earned a place to represent Victoria at the Australian All Schools Cross Country Championships. An outstanding effort. Good luck to Ryan Walsh (Year 12) this weekend. He has gained selection for the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup to play Gippsland Power. The Spring Sport season commences in Week 4 of Term 3. Students have the opportunity to participate in the Athletics and/or Water Polo programs. Online sign up forms were emailed to all parents earlier this week. Links to the forms are also below: • Click here if your son is interested in doing Athletics. • Click here if your son is interested in doing Water Polo. Over the Summer Sport season, students can participate in Swimming or Triathlon as a second sport. The links were also in the aforementioned email, but you can register your son’s interest using the links below: • Click here if your son is interested in doing Swimming as a second sport in Summer. • Click here if your son is interested in doing Triathlon as a second sport in Summer. Is your son looking to keep fit in the lead up to and over the holidays or wanting to improve his running technique? Elitewellbeing are continuing to host running sessions at the KAO. The next session will take place on Friday morning, 28 June from 6.45am to 8.15am. Sessions will also be held over the holidays. They will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.00am to 11.00am. Students are highly encouraged to attend. If you have any concerns or questions regarding Sport, please contact the staff member in charge of your son’s team or the Director of Sport at dos@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Sport Report After sitting on top of AGSV premiership table for six straight weeks, the First XI Soccer team knew that they were going to a fair target to the rest of the competition, especially against a full-strength Marcellin squad on their home turf. In the first half, both teams had ample scoring chances but were unable to capitalise thanks to great defensive pressure. With the score 0-0 at half-time, Camberwell started the second half strongly, playing a much more open and fast-paced game. However, an unfortunate slip-up deep in defence turned the ball over to Marcellin who slotted the first goal of the game with ease. Much to the boys’ credit, they did not let this dishearten them. They stuck to their game plan and their patience was rewarded with a through ball from Jasper Guthrie (Year 12) that saw Lachie Waycott (Year 11) beat his defender and ultimately the goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1. With this result, Camberwell has now secured their first AGSV finals appearance in over ten years; a great testament to the hard work and dedication shown by all those in the team. Playing on their home turf of the KAO, the Inter A Soccer team looked to gain an advantage over rivals Marcellin. Despite the best efforts of both teams and goalkeeper Jack Hu’s (Year 10) excellent saves, the scores were tied at 0-0 after the first half of play. Early in the second half, Mason Pearson (Year 10) was able to capitalise on a free kick to give Camberwell the first goal of the game, only for Marcellin to equalise minutes later. Excellent footwork from George Kocalidis (Year 10) saw him dribble past multiple defenders to score Camberwell’s second. Unfortunately for the team, Marcellin would refuse to bow down as they would kick two successive goals to take the lead, before a late Camberwell goal saw the game finish in a 3-3 draw. The First XVIII Football team made a competitive start to their Round 7 match against Marcellin. Kicking with the aid of a slight breeze, the boys were able to kick two goals through the efforts of captain Ryan Walsh (Year 12) and vice-captain Oscar Cirulis (Year 12) to trail by only one goal at the first break. Unfortunately, the team were unable to maintain this pressure and conceded seven unanswered goals during the second and third quarters until Finnegan Weston (Year 11) was able to get one back for CGS late in the third quarter. Marcellin eventually finished the game with a 73-point win; however, the game was a lot more competitive than the scoreboard suggests. Harry McColl (Year 10) was a standout for CGS down in defence, playing his best game for the season through tight defensive efforts and creative use of the football. Captain Lachlan Purcell (Year 12) also contributed with a solid game from the centre, leading by example with his tireless work rate. The First XVIII now have their sights set on a win in their last game against Yarra Valley. Following the long weekend break, First XI Hockey travelled to Yarra Valley for their penultimate game of the regular season. The tone of the game was set early with some solid team play, followed by a pin-point long range ball from Nick Gooden (Year 12) that was stunningly deflected into the top corner by Ryan Box (Year 12) . Camberwell continued to apply consistent pressure on the Yarra Valley defenders throughout the first half. The second half proved to be a more even contest; however, Camberwell’s defensive strength, in addition to some skilful goalkeeping from Brodie Carswell (Year 9), saw Camberwell comfortably win 9-0. Sam Garrard, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport
