Edition 51, 24 May 2019

From the Acting Headmaster Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea Thank you to all of our staff members and students who came together yesterday to support the Cancer Research Foundation and “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea”. The School raised over $700 towards the fight against cancer, with the money going to fund research and to provide support services to patients and their families. A special thank you to our Health and Wellbeing Committee and our Prefects for organising this very worthy event. Thank you also to all of our students and staff who supplied a delicious array of treats for the morning tea. Several of our boys displayed outstanding baking skills and their wares were most appreciated.

Middle School

It was another busy week for the boys. It has been rewarding to see the support shown for boys who seek to challenge themselves outside of their comfort zone. Boys should feel comfortable in seeking support when they need it and should be able to identify at least one member of teaching or support staff who they feel comfortable to speak with. This is a valuable conversation to have with your sons.

Middle School Sport Representing the School is indeed a great honour and I wish all boys the very best in their fixtures tomorrow, amid challenging weather conditions. Boys are reminded about their obligation to their team at practice and on Saturday so that they have the best opportunity to play to their potential. Sport is an important element of the holistic development that we strive to instil our in our School values.

Year 7 Da Vinci Decathlon Eighteen teams participated in the ten Academic Disciplines competition on Monday 18 May 2019. After an intense day of pondering over Mathematics problems, writing poetry, completing English tasks, tacking the Science of land degradation among a host of other code breakers and Cartography exercises, Camberwell Grammar School’s two teams were placed first and third overall. Both teams achieved their excellent results by demonstrating great teamwork, perseverance, a solid knowledge of all the areas of the decathlon and having fun. The winning team now progresses to the State Final to be held next week at Methodist Ladies’ College. The results for the Regional da Vinci Decathlon (Victoria) held at Camberwell Grammar School were: Place

Sport

There were some fantastic results from last weekend’s sport. Firsts Soccer defeated PEGS and continue their charge towards a finals birth, while Firsts Hockey had their first win of the season against a fast and furious Ivanhoe. The Cross Country team performed well at Yarra Bend Park, with Tom Bowers (Year 11, Senior), Jimmy Smith (Year 10, Intermediate), Harrison Car (Year 7, Junior) and Jack Dobbyn (Year 8, Junior) all achieving top 10 finishes in their respective races. The Fencing squad had another competition on Sunday and two of our Junior teams did exceptionally well. Julian Lim, Colin Joshi, Jim Zhu (all Year 7) and Luke Nguyen (Year 9) combined to win the Junior Schools League Epee, beating Trinity in the final, while the team of Akalanka Gunawardana (Year 9), Ming Han Low (Year 9) and Steven Lu (all Year 9) took out third place. We are about to enter a busy period with a host of extra-curricular activities occurring during Week 7 and an examination period. Despite that, the Sport program will continue as normal and students are expected to train as scheduled, other than Week 7 and the Queen’s Birthday weekend. During that time, only Firsts teams will train. Students should confirm details with the Teacher-In-Charge of their team if they are unsure about their commitments. The final round of Sport this Term for all teams, other than Firsts Football and Soccer, will be on Saturday 15 June. The season will recommence in Term 3. We have been blessed with fantastic weather so far this season, but it appears winter is truly upon us with rain and colder temperatures forecast. A reminder to refer to the Uniform Booklet on the Parent Portal to ensure your son is wearing the appropriate uniform for their sport. Some students are still wearing outdated uniform. Also, students should refrain from wearing non-CGS clothing when representing the School. If you have any concerns or questions regarding Sport, contact the staff member in charge of your son’s team or to contact the Director of Sport at dos@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Sport Report The Third Blue Football team had a resounding win over PEGS to record two straight wins for the season. Jasper Fodor and Joshua Pollocks (both Year 11) led the team in defensive intensity as they laid countless tackles and desperately fought for numerous second effort opportunities. In the forward line, Harry Rice (Year 11) starred, kicking six goals on the back of great run and carry by the midfield led by Kosta Froutzis (Year 11), who himself kicked five goals. Camberwell continued their dominant performance from start to finish as the team finished 137 point winners. The Futsal Gold team had a very high scoring encounter against Trinity as they looked for their first win for the season. Camberwell came out strongly as the boys scored three early goals to put themselves in the box seat for the rest of the game. However, with a lapse in intensity from Camberwell, Trinity took full advantage, tying the scores at the half. Ray Son and Henry Sutton (both Year 12) combined brilliantly in the second half as they kicked 6 of Camberwell’s 8 goals. The team ultimately came away comfortable winners. The 9A Hockey team faced a very competent PEGS opponent on the weekend to continue their incredibly successful season so far. Manhar Singh scored the two very quick goals thanks to team play by the forwards, led by Ethan Aw and Connor Laird (all Year 9). The boys continued to press hard on both the defensive and offensive ends, leading to four more Camberwell goals from Hamish Campbell-Cowan (Year 9) and Connor Laird. The final score ended as 6-0 Camberwell’s way with plenty of positives to take out of the game heading into the next round. In a winner-gets-top-spot clash against PEGS, the First XI Soccer team knew they would have to bring their best efforts to finish victors. Camberwell got out to an unbelievably quick start, scoring the first two goals in under ten minutes with great finishes from Lachie Waycott (Year 11) and the ever-reliable Tristan Patsiotis (Year 12). The rest of the half was completely in Camberwell’s control as chances kept coming the team’s way. Coming out after half-time, the team started where they left off as Chris Han (Year 12) headed the ball into the back of the net with absolute precision. Despite conceding a late goal, Camberwell were able to cruise to a 3-1 win to position themselves a game clear in the top spot on the ladder. Good luck to all teams in this week’s round of sport. Sam Garrard, Captain of Games Page 4

Music Mid Year Concert Instructions The music students and staff are looking forward to presenting their efforts next week at the Mid-Year Concert, and it is so exciting to see the ensembles in their final rehearsals in the PAC this week. Below are some brief instructions for boys and families who are attending the Concert, which will be familiar to families who have been involved in this event before. The only major difference is that rather than distributing water in single-use disposable bottles to the boys at interval, this year, we ask the boys to bring their own water bottle, which can be kept with their instrument or in their designated place in the Mallinson Music School. • Students performing in the Concert should arrive at school no later than 6.45pm. Their ensemble conductors will let them know which room to report to in the coming days. • The Concert is expected to finish at 10.30pm. Students can be picked up from Gate 3 or Gate 5. • If students wish to make use of refillable water stations in the Music School during Interval, they can leave their water bottles in the Henley Rehearsal Room (Room 1.02) prior to the Concert, or with their instrument case. • Students performing in the Concert do not require a ticket. They can sit in the first four rows of the auditorium, and come backstage before performing in their item(s). If students are in the Choir, they should sit in their choir seats in the Middleton Theatre. Ben Bishop, Head of Music
