PASTOR’S PAGE

The Shepherd’s Notebook Grant us wisdom, courage, and an extra measure of love One of my favorite sayings rhymes in Latin and is memorable in any language. “Qui cantat, bis orat”He who sings, prays twice! Who doesn’t have a favorite hymn? Or, many favorites? I’ve been humming and praying an old favorite of late, as I continue serving as Calvary’s interim senior pastor and prepare to receive the Doctor of Ministry degree on May 3-4, 2012, at the 50th Commencement of the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage … …for the facing of this hour; …for the living of these days; …lest we miss Your Kingdom’s goal; …serving You, Whom we adore. This hymn-prayer, written for a fledgling church in the Great Depression, is so timeless! Is there ever a time when we do not need God’s gifts of wisdom and courage? I don’t think so. "Grant us wisdom, grant us courage….” Interesting, isn’t it, what the prayer –hymn doesn’t ask for? Knowledge! This hymn reminds us that knowledge without wisdom, courage and a healthy dose of love can end up doing more harm than good. But knowledge, wrapped up in the wisdom and courage that come from our Lord and tied up in the love of Jesus Christ, makes community stronger, healthier, more able and available to be Christ -- to each other at Calvary, and in all the places our Lord calls us to serve Him and our neighbors. St. Paul got it right when he reminded the church at Corinth, and us, how “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” 1 Corinthians 8:1-13. Yes, let’s celebrate the gift of knowledge, whether it comes with a diploma or in the knowledge that Calvary is gaining of itself and God’s will during this interim. Even more, let us sing – and pray twice – for the Lord to grant us wisdom and courage, tied up in godly love as we patiently prepare to recognize and welcome a new pastor when the time – he or she – arrives and as we become the New Calvary the Holy Spirit is preparing us to be. Grant us, O Lord, an extra measure of wisdom, courage, and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Pastor Cathi

God of Grace and God of Glory God of grace and God of glory, on your people pour your pow’r; crown your ancient church’s story; bring its bud to glorious flow’r. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour. Lo! The hosts of evil round us scorn the Christ, assail his ways! From the fears that long have bound us free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage for the living of these days, for the living of these days, Cure your children’s warring madness; bend our pride to your control; shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss your kingdom’s goal, lest we miss your kingdom’s goal. Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore; let the gift of your salvation be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving you whom we adore, serving you whom we adore.

CONGREGATION NEWS

It’s About Our Family Sympathy Sincere condolences go out to friends and family of Virginia Thorkildsen, who passed away on April 4th.

Pastoral Search Team Update Last month, we reported that we had received additional names from Pastor David Wendel, Ministry Coordinator for the NALC. Since then, we have held initial interviews with these candidates and will conduct second interviews with two candidates in the near future. We have been very encouraged by our conversations and want to speak a word of encouragement to you as well. The Holy Spirit is blessing and guiding this search process! At this point, we’d like to review the next steps in the search process, which we shared at the adult forum in December. It is quite different from what has been done before at Calvary, and we are convinced it is an exciting and welcome difference. When the search team has prayerfully come to a decision on the candidate we believe the Holy Spirit has identified and chosen for a call to Calvary, we will share information about the candidate with the congregation as has been done in the past. In addition, we will invite that candidate and his or her family to spend a weekend in Brookfield. Part of the weekend will be spent in further conversations between the search team and the candidate and spouse. On Sunday, the candidate will lead and preach at the worship service. Afterward there will be opportunity for the congregation to meet and visit with the candidate and his or her family. We believe this will be an important time for the candidate and the congregation to meet.

Please forward all news of births, illness, deaths, or any change of address/contact information to the church office.

by Grace Gunnlaugsson, PST chairperson Following that weekend visit, the pastoral search team will meet to confirm that this is indeed the pastor to whom the Holy Spirit has led Calvary. The church council will call a special congregational meeting to be held after it has been announced at two consecutive Sunday services and notice has been mailed or e-mailed to all voting members at least 10 days in advance of the date of the meeting (per Calvary’s constitution). According to the NALC guidelines for the calling of a pastor, a letter of call will be sent on behalf of the congregation. The pastor will communicate an acceptance of the call through a personal letter to the congregation within thirty days of the congregation’s vote. While we are extremely hopeful that we are in the latter stages of the search, there is always a chance that something delays the process. But we wanted you to be aware of the steps ahead and the opportunity for all of us to meet and welcome the pastoral candidate before a call is voted upon. Of course, the pace of these events will also be subject to the availability of the candidate for a weekend visit. Thank you yet again for your patience and your prayers. Please include in your prayers the candidates, their families, and the congregations they may currently be serving. May our loving, omnipotent and omniscient God continue to bless this congregation!

Thank you... From Don & Jean Anderson: Thanks you! We wish to express our deep appreciation to all our friends at Calvary for attending our 65th anniversary celebration on April 15th, an particularly for the many cards received. We were asked many times as to our success formula, to which we respond: “It takes a lot of love, understanding, patience and forgiveness, coupled with a strong commitment to each other and God & His daily teachings. Sincerely, Don & Jean

From Judy DeBruine and David DeBruine: What an awesome response! On behalf of Compassion International, we want to thank everyone for the wonderful support given to the Water Of Life during the February Mission of the Month. Our goal was 10 units, at $55 each. Through your very generous giving, Calvary will be donating 67 units to families in need of safe drinking water! If you didn’t have an opportunity to participate, you can still provide safe water through Compassion at www.compassion.com/wateroflife. Thank you for your willingness to be used by the Lord to bless so many families.

Friends of Luther Manor Membership Drive In conjunction with Older Adults Month, Calvary is conducting our annual membership drive for the Friends of Luther Manor all this month. What is Friends of Luther Manor? It is an association of more than 70 Lutheran congregations dedicated to serving the needs of older adults in the Greater Milwaukee area. Formerly named the Auxiliary, the name was changed in 2011 to reflect the broader scope for new membership and to encourage a new generation of members.

What does the organization do? It lends its support to Luther Manor’s ministry through prayers, gifts and service. Membership dues, $ 5.00 per year, and other contributions underwrite the cost of special projects at Luther Manor. Past projects include looms, ceramic kilns, aviaries, beauty shop equipment, and equipment for Luther Manor’s popular Ice Cream Parlor. A table of information will be available in the narthex all month. Nancy Marsho or another Friend of Luther Manor will be available in the narthex after most services during May.

SHOW A LITTLE KINDNESS WITH COOKIES! May is Luther Manor month at Calvary. Did you know that each weekday Luther Manor volunteers deliver cookies, coffee and tea to the 200+ residents of the Health Care Center? The volunteers visit each resident and offer these treats, while individually greeting each person. We invite you to support this important ministry. Please consider donating homemade or packaged, store bought cookies for this program. Softer cookies, without nuts or seeds, help comply with the dietary needs of many residents. Any day in May, drop off your cookies in the Calvary kitchen. Please label the package with: • • • •

Iglesia Luterana Agustina de Guatemala At the March council meeting the council approved an $800 gift to Iglesia Luterana Agustina de Guatemala (ILAG). The gift comes from $800.00 that the Calvary Sunday School raised several years ago to purchase pews for the church we helped build in Guatemala. However the church decided to use folding chairs to make better use of their worship space. Because of the decision, the council felt that it would be good to put the funds to a Sunday School-Christian Education related purpose in Guatemala. While in Guatemala earlier this year, Pastor Cathi and met with the leadership of ILKAG and explored, among other things, how they might be able to use this gift. They have two projects that could use financial support and the council approved this gift.

The Iglesia Luterana Agustina de Guatemala (Augustinian Lutheran Church of Guatemala) was founded in 1991 by Padre Horacio Castillo and his family. The members come from the margins of the Guatemalan society, people of few resources and are predominantly indigenous. The philosophy of the ILAG is to provide pastoral accompaniment and holistic development. The center of the ILAG is Christ and from this center we seek to provide for all aspects of the life of our members and their communities - the spiritual, physical, emotional and material. The church has about 3,000 members in nearly 20 congregations spread throughout Guatemala. ILAG also operates two elementary schools in Guatemala City.

Prayers Please check the weekly announcement bulletin for those people needing our urgent prayers. If you have any prayer requests, please call or email the church office. Please also continue to pray for the following Calvary family and friends: Shut-Ins: Betty Schraith, Elaine Shaw, Paul & Marj Skarie, Lorene & Greg Fleckenstein, Shirley Derse, Lorraine Zembinski, Mickey Rash, Bill Rash Jr. (son of Mickey Rash). Compassion Sunday

May 12/13

Calvary is participating in Compassion Sunday on May 12th & 13th at both worship services. This is a national event that helps us grow in our understanding of God’s very special love for the poor. It’s also an opportunity for each of us to intervene in the life of at least one child in poverty.

For more information, speak with Dave DeBruine on Compassion Sunday (and Saturday!) or visit their website at compassionsunday.com.

On these days, each of us in our church family has the opportunity to change the world for one child. After worship, visit the Compassion table in the narthex where you can view packets showing boys and girls who need a sponsor right now. This is your opportunity to release a child from poverty in Jesus’ name. You will give them a future and a hope through the loving intervention of a Christcentered program run by a local church in their neighborhood.

Thank you to Panera Each Sunday, Panera (located in the Ruby Isle shopping center) supplies fresh baked bread to Calvary for communion. They do this for no cost to Calvary!

As a thank you, we encourage you, our members, to frequent Panera, whether for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even just a cup of coffee & a snack! And while you’re there, let them know you are from Calvary and that we appreciate their generosity.

First Communion On Sunday, April 22nd, two special 4th graders received their first Holy Communion: Emily Berger and Emily Otten. We, as a congregation rejoice with them and their families as they now join us at the Lord’s table.

Have you ever wondered…? Where did the stained glass angel window in the Calvary narthex come from? The window was a gift from the Derse family in memory of Tom Derse, a Calvary member who passed away in 1997. The window was dedicated in March of 1999 “to the glory of God”.
