THE PEOPLE OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH GATHER

THE WORSHIP FEBRUARY 22, 2015

OF

GOD

FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT

11:00 A.M.

We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

BEGINNING IN THE FOURTH CENTURY, Lent served as a period of preparation: for those to be baptized early Easter morning, and for those who, because of some “grievous sin,” had been separated from the church and were now ready to rejoin the community. TODAY, Lent is a time of spiritual reflection spanning the forty weekdays from Ash Wednesday to the Saturday before Easter. The Sundays during Lent are feast days and, therefore, are not counted as part of the forty days but are referred to as the Sundays in Lent. After the waters had receded and the Ark came to rest on dry land, God set a rainbow in the clouds. And, God said, “Whenever the rainbow appears, I’ll see it and remember my promise: never again will floodwaters destroy all of life.” — Genesis 9:12-17

While other vessels steer by sun and stars, the ship we sail into Lent—and, then, on to the cross and resurrection—sets its course by a rainbow and a promise. A rainbow isn’t much, but it’s as much as we get. That, and the promise—both guiding us to our final and true home, where there is nothing to harm us and everything for which to be thankful.

G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE During the Prelude, prepare for worship by centering your heart with this prayer adapted from The Rainbow Christ Prayer by Kittredge Cherry & Patrick Cheng:

Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier, BWV 731 J.S. Bach (1685-1750) John Dautzenberg, Organ

Rainbow Christ, you embody all the colors of the world. Rainbows serve as bridges between different realms: Heaven and Earth, east and west, gay and straight, rich and poor. Free us from apathy, and grant us the grace of activism. Free us from isolation, and grant us the grace of interdependence. Free us from rigid categories, and grant us the grace of interwoven identities. With the rainbow, lead us beyond black-and-white thinking to experience the whole spectrum of life. Rainbow Christ, you light up the world. You make rainbows as a promise to support all life on Earth. Like the rainbow, may we embody all the colors of the world! Amen. LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES WELCOME

CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP

Ubi caritas, excerpt from Motet Op. 10 No. 1 Gregorian Chant/Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) Sanctuary Choir

Where there is charity and love, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us together as one. Amen. PROCESSION, HYMN 200

What Wondrous Love Is This WONDROUS LOVE

LITANY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE

Psalm 25 Zain Shariff, Cantor

Refrain. To you, O Lord, we lift our hearts. To you, we lift our hearts. To you, O God, our gentle conqueror, we lift our hearts in grateful surrender. For, when workers of evil threaten to undo us, you stay close by. And, when under the weight of our own stumbling and sin, we fall into fear and despair, you surround us with your love’s protection—the assurance that we are neither abandoned nor lost. You alone are our hope and our salvation. There is no other. All life long we’ve known your faithfulness and mercy, and so, in confidence and hope, once again we ask that you come and lead us home. The way home is paved with love unending and illumined by God’s grace. Let the redeemed remember and rejoice in our Beloved’s goodness! Yes, let all the redeemed hope in the Lord and sing for joy! Amen! Refrain. MORNING PRAYER

John Appiah-Duffell

O Beloved, searcher of all who wander and falter and fail, with the Psalmist we lift our hearts in praise of your faithfulness. Nothing stops your coming to us in forgiveness and grace. When we’re heartsick over the brokenness of our lives or weighed down by guilt, your mercy races to bring healing and hope. When joy is gone and we’re stained by sorrow and regret, you bathe us in tears flowing from your own broken heart. Now, like one beholding a rainbow after a flood, or one waited on by angels after the desert’s heat, may we hear the sure promise that, whatever comes, we are held forever in your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

John Appiah-Duffell

La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Make Us One MAKE US ONE

Make us one, Lord, make us one; Holy Spirit, make us one. Let your love flow so the world will know we are one in you. A TIME WITH CHILDREN AND BLESSING

Yolanda Appiah-Kubi

People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Our prayer is that they grow up to be like Jesus—strong and brave, full of grace and truth! And, that we will help them. MUSICAL MEDITATION

Nearer, My God, to Thee BETHANY

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON

Genesis/Génesis 9:8-17 Pastor Elijah 8Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9’As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.’ 12God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ 17God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.’ 8Y

18For

Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, 19in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight people, were saved through water. 21And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ Leo Nestor (b. 1948) Zain Shariff, Cantor

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent, and believe in the good news. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. – Mark 1, adapted GOSPEL LESSON

Mark/Marcos 1:9-15 Reverend Glaze 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’ 12And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. 14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’ 9Aconteció

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL HYMN 662 We sing v 1 Spanish, v 2 English, v 3 Spanish, v 4 English. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR LENTEN CONFESSION

Reverend Glaze

In this, the church’s holy spring, we ask you, O God, to renew us. With a cleansing breath blow from our lives the dust of sin, and make us again your faithful people. By your gentle grace lift from us all guilt, shame, and regret so that all that is broken might be repaired. With the lengthening days, stretch our hearts until we might behold your glory stretched out upon the cross and thus be ready for your risen life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE

from Psalm 103:8, 13-14, 17-18 Reverend Glaze

Hear the promise of Scripture: “Our God is merciful, gracious, and slow to anger. As tender as a parent’s heart is for his or her children, so God’s heart is for us. God knows we’re only weak human beings, yet God’s love never quits. Blessed are those who live in the promises and peace of God.” Yes, we’re living in the promises and peace of God. Thanks be to God!
