THE PEOPLE OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH GATHER

THE WORSHIP FEBRUARY 8, 2015

OF

GOD

FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

11:00 A.M.

We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

BECAUSE OF HIS UNDETERRED OPPOSITION to apartheid, Reverend Beyers Naudé (1915-2004) was expelled from his Dutch Reformed Church, was rejected by his community, and was “banned,” placed under house arrest by the South African government. “THIS BANNING,” he said, “ will not stop me from loving people…from following Jesus Christ...it will not rob me of my inner freedom. Through prayer and by God’s grace I’ll never allow this to break my spirit. It will never rob me of the conviction that the evil of apartheid will crumble and disappear, and that one day our land and her people will be free.” Early, while it was still dark, Jesus went out to a lonely place to pray. Simon and the others were looking for him. When they found him, they said, “Everyone wants you. Come back.” “No,” he said. “I’m moving on to do what I came to do—to preach the good news!” –Mark 1:35-39

“THERE IS NOTHING MORE EXHAUSTING than the constant awareness that one’s life is being lived at cross-purposes. What we long for is the energy that comes from a concentration of one’s forces in a single direction, toward a single end.” — Howard Thurman (1899-1981), African-American Baptist minister and influence on Martin Luther King, Jr., The Inward Journey

G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE During the Prelude, prepare for worship by centering your heart with this prayer by Howard Thurman:

Andante, from Sonata in C-sharp minor, Op. 5 Basil Harwood (1859-1949) John Dautzenberg, Organ

Lord Jesus, open unto me—light for my darkness, courage for my fear, hope for my despair, peace for my turmoil, joy for my sorrow, strength for my weakness, trust for my doubt, forgiveness for my sin, tenderness for my toughness, love for my hate. Lord Jesus, open unto me—thy self for my self. Lord Jesus, open unto me! LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES

LITANY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE

Psalm 147 Teresa Ferrara, Cantor

Refrain. Praise to God who reigns above: Alleluia! Alleluia! Our whole being longs to be a song to you, O Beloved. With lyrics set to the sound of all those you have gathered up and are leading home: the outcast, the weak, the wounded and broken. To the rhythm of their feet—shout! To the melody of their coming—sing! God speaks, and it is done. God breathes and cold winds sweep across the land! God breathes again, and warm breezes blow! A horse’s speed or mighty armies do not impress our God. Wealth and power and position count for nothing! But, the Lord delights in those who honor God’s name, who walk in God’s love. Sing praise to our God! All peoples, with your whole being make music and sing! Refrain. MORNING PRAYER

Nancy Renfrow

God, our Beloved, in our worship may we be so overwhelmed by the beauty and power of your love that we drop all attachment to that which distracts and binds us, that which makes us fearful and anxious. Before your grace may all burdens fall from our backs until we see ourselves only as you see us—children, loved and forgiven. And then, set free, may we rise with singleness of devotion and purpose to sing your praise and to live for Jesus Christ as his faithful followers, doing good and making peace. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Nancy Renfrow

La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Make Us One

MAKE US ONE

Make us one, Lord, make us one; Holy Spirit, make us one. Let your love flow so the world will know we are one in you. A TIME WITH CHILDREN AND BLESSING

Reverend Glaze

People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Our prayer is that they grow up to be like Jesus—strong and brave, full of grace and truth! And, that we will help them. MUSICAL MEDITATION

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON

Isaiah/Isaías 40:21-31 Pastor Erica 21Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; 23who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. 24Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their

stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. 27Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God’? 28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. 21¿No

sabéis? ¿No habéis oído?

I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe betide me if I do not proclaim the gospel! 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. 18What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. 19For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself

am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law) so that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I might by any means save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia Melchior Vulpius (c. 1560 – 1616) Teresa Ferrara, Cantor

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! He cured many who were sick, and cast out demons. In the morning he went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! – Mark 1, adapted GOSPEL LESSON

Mark/Marcos 1:29-35 Pastor Elijah 29As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. 32That evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 33And the whole city was gathered around the door. 34And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. 29Al

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL HYMN 575

G IVING AND S ERVING BLESSING THOSE CALLED TO SERVICE ON THE CALVARY BOARD AND DIACONATE There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve the same Lord, yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do. The body of Christ has many different parts, just as any other body does. A body isn’t really a body, unless there is more than one part. It takes many parts to make a single body. Together you are the body of Christ. —1 Corinthians 12:4-5, 19-20, 27 Thanksgiving for those who completed their service in 2014. Questions for those called for service in 2015. Do you trust that you have been called to serve God and Calvary Baptist Church? We do. Will you be faithful to this call, doing your tasks with care, diligence and joy? We so promise. Will you challenge us to be the best we can be, to live up to the things we say we believe and to our calling to share Christ’s love with all the world? We will. Question for the congregation. Will you be faithful to these servants by honoring their leadership, offering encouragement, praying for them, and serving beside them? We will. Congregational Prayer. Loving God, we thank you for these sisters and brothers whom you have called to work within this church family. We give you thanks for their following of Jesus and for their willingness, by your grace, to serve us. As we commission them for their ministry, we ask your blessing upon them. Guide and equip them so that your church would grow in peace, love and unity—and that your name be glorified in all the earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Pastor. Brothers and sisters, you are commissioned for service. May God bless you as you share in the ministry of Jesus Christ. In all your words and deeds, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God through him. MUSICAL OFFERING
