G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE
WELCOME
Ave Maria Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) Ashley Dalton, Flute Chuck Andreatta
BECOMING CENTERED We are all meant to be mothers of God—for God is always needing to be born. What good is it to me if this birth of the divine takes place unceasingly, but does not take place within me? And, what good is it to me if Mary is full of grace if I am not also full of grace? What good is it to me for the Creator to give birth to God’s Child if I do not also give birth to the Child in my time and my place? This, then, is the fullness of time: when Christ is begotten in me. —Meister Eckhart, 14th century German theologian CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP

LIGHTING THE CANDLE OF LOVE Barbara Hoffer: On our journey through Advent we have lit three candles—one for hope, the second for peace, and the third for joy. Today we light the fourth candle—the candle of love. Kathie Lansing: There is no greater power than love. It is stronger than empires and armies, stronger than grief or despair, stronger even than fear and death. Claudia Moore: Love is young Mary’s song—hopeful and determined. Love is Joseph’s song— faithful and tender, merciful, protective. Love is God’s song— gentle, strong, full and free, coming among us, holding nothing back. Love is to be our song— welcoming, affirming, full of forgiveness and grace. Gene Saupp: Love is the song we need today. As the coming of the Christ draws near, we light a candle for love. When God Is a Child
CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE, HYMN 132 (verse 4)

Love is a flame that burns in our heart. Jesus will come and will never depart. When God is a child there’s joy in our song. The last shall be first and the weak shall be strong, and none shall be afraid. INVOCATION

A TIME WITH CHILDREN AND BLESSING People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Our prayer is that they grow up to be like Jesus—strong and brave, full of grace and truth! And, that we will help them.

MUSICAL MEDITATION
L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD 2 Samuel 7:1-11,16 Reverend Glaze 1Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, 2the king said to the prophet Nathan, ‘See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent.’ 3Nathan said to the king, ‘Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you.’ 4But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 5Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? 6I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. 7Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of
HEBREW LESSON
Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ 8Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; 9and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. 16Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever. 1Tiempo
PSALTER We read responsively and sing the Refrain.
Psalm 89:1-4, 14, 27-29 Teresa Ferrara, Cantor
Refrain. Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord, the goodness of the Lord. Of your love, O Beloved, ever we will sing—your goodness and mercy the theme of our song. Everything in this life passes away, but your mercy and love last forever. Refrain. In your kindness you have made a promise also without end—an oath to send us one like your servant David, to be our good shepherd, our lord and our king. His kingdom, like yours, will be founded on truth and love and justice done. He will call you “Father,” and you will name him “First-born Son” and call him “King of kings.” All who see his beauty will shout in festive praise, and will walk faithfully in all his ways. And, of his rule, there will be no end. As long as heaven endures, he will reign. Alleluia! Refrain.
EPISTLE LESSON
25Now
to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia Melchior Vulpius (c. 1560 – 1616) Teresa Ferrara, Cantor
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Here am I, the servant of the Lord. Let it be with me according to your word. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! –Luke 1, adapted Luke 1:26-38 Elijah Zehyoue 26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.’ 29But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ 34Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’ 35The angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37For nothing will be impossible with God.’ 38Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her.
GOSPEL LESSON
26Al
This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. Startled by a Holy Humming
GOSPEL HYMN
BEACH SPRING
Startled by a holy humming drumming in her heart and ear Mary heard an angel coming, it was Gabriel drawing near From the loud though soundless beating of the flashing, unseen wings Pulsed the words of sacred greeting: she would bear the king of kings. Troubled by the angel’s blessing, Mary asked how it could be In her mind she was confessing all that doubt can never see How the flesh is filled with spirit, how the heart can beat with love How another heart can hear it, how this comes from God above. Tending to the voice of heaven Mary’s doubts began to fade While her faith like rising leaven grew until she gladly prayed May it be as God has spoken, may it be as I have heard May God’s will be never broken, may I live by God’s own word. Startled, troubled, then believing, Mary’s vision opened wide She by faith began perceiving life and truth from heaven’s side Lord, may we at last like Mary catch the slant of heaven’s light Piercing through the doubts that bury hope and grace from human sight. –Text, Thomas H. G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR PRAYERS—PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Reverend Glaze We invite and encourage everyone to pray aloud the Lord’s Prayer in your native language. Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. INVITATION TO GIVE AND TO SERVE MUSICAL OFFERING

SULLIVAN
The love of God is broader than earth’s vast expanse, ‘tis deeper and wider than the sea Love reaches out to all to bring abundant life, for God so loved the world his only Son he gave. Share His love by telling what the Lord has done for you, share his love by sharing of your faith And show the world that Jesus Christ is real to you, every moment, every day. We show the love of God each day we live, reveal Christ’s presence in our lives And how the Holy Spirit guides us day by day, for God so love the world his only Son he gave. Share His love by telling what the Lord has done for you, share his love by sharing of your faith And show the world that Jesus Christ is real to you, every moment, every day. Elijah Zehyoue
