Milosan & Pogacean versus Al Jazeera
PHOTO: Tv-screenshot of Prima TV trasmission. Original tape was first broadcasted by Al Jazeera. From left to right: Marie Jeanne Ion, Prima TV, Sorin Dumitru Miscoci, Prima TV, Ovidiu Ohanesian, Romania Libera. The story of abduction can be found here, and here.
The abduction of three Romanian reporters by terrorists in 2009 in Bagdad proved to be source of inspiration for the contemporary artist Cristi Pogﾄツean and maquette hobbyst Lucian Milosan.
ARTIST: Cristi Pogﾄツean TITLE: The Abduction from the Seraglio 2006 YEAR: 2006 MEDIUM: polipropilen carpet EDITION: not known, made by INCOV S.R.L. , Alba Iulia.
ARTIST: Lucian Milosan TITLE: Abduction of Romanian reporters YEAR: not known
Unknown Bactrian artist versus Brancusi
ARTIST: Constantin Brancusi TITLE:Bird in Space (L'Oiseau dans l'espace) MEDIUM: "brass smoothed and polished to the point where the materiality of the sculpture is dissolved in its reflective luminosity." YEAR: 1932-1944 COLLECTION: Peggy Guggenheim, Venice.
The bird theme represent an axis in the universe of Brancusi's ouvres. His obsession for capturing the essence of flight begun with "Maiastra" sculptures, followed by Golden Bird group, and, finally, the Bird in Space series. According to S. Geist, sixteen examples of "The Bird in Space" series , dating from 1923 to 1940, have been identified. ARTIST: Unknown Bactrian artist YEAR: Circa 3,000 years before Brancusi TITLE: Unknown PURPOSE: Probably a Bactiran stone ritual object.I am fascinated by this (probably) ritual objects, they are subject to my ongoing research, I hope to publish soon my findings.
Wall versus Hokusai
ARTIST: Jeff Wall TITLE: A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai) YEAR: 1993 MEDIUM: Transparency in lightbox (2290 x 3770 mm) "This work is one of Wall's earliest digital montages. It refers directly to a woodblock print by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. Wall transposes the nineteenth-century Japanese scene to a contemporary cranberry farm near Vancouver. Amateur actors play the odd assortment of rural and city characters, surprised by the forces of nature. It required over 100 photographs, taken over the course of more than a year, to achieve a seamless montage that gives the illusion of capturing a real moment in time." (source: tate.org.uk)
ARTIST: Katsushika Hokusai TITLE: 'Ejiri in Suruga Province' (Sunshū Ejiri), From the series ‘ThirtySix Views of Mt. Fuji' (Fugaku sanjū-rokkei) YEAR:1830-1833 MEDIUM: colour woodblock print Ejiri was a post-station on the Tōkaidō Highway on the west side of Suruga Bay, near modern Shimizu City. This was close to the famous beauty spot of Miho-no-Matsubara. This view depicts a much more prosaic location, a path that snakes through a marsh. The silhouette of Mt Fuji is drawn with a single line, providing a backdrop for the figures and trees battling the wind in the foreground. Bending their bodies and clutching at scarves and hats, all turn their faces away from us - as if we were the source of the blast that carries off the tissues that had been tucked into the woman's kimono. The tissues flit skyward, accompanied by dancing leaves and an escaped hat. The porter who has lost his hat gesticulates in surprise, a circle of padding left forlorn on his head. Source: T. Clark, 100 views of Mount Fuji (London, The British Museum Press, 2001)
Regina versus Ray and Duchamp
Regina Silveira explores anamorphic perspectives of well-known objects. Regina has "anamorphosed" Marcel Duchamp Bicycle wheel and Man Ray iron with nails. Her technique is not new, Leonardo Da Vinci first experimented anamorphic perspectives. Hans Holbein the Younger created in his painting "The Ambasadors" the most famous and striking example of a hidden anamorphosis. Andreea Pazzo dome and vault of the Church of St. Ignazio in Rome represent the pinacle of anamorphic illusion. Andreea Pazzo was commisioned to paint the flat ceiling of the curch in such a way to create the illusion of a dome.
The Bruce High Quality & all versus GĂŠricault
TITLE: The Raft of Medusa ARTIST: The Bruce High Quality The Bruce High Quality Foundation is group of anonymous artists founded in 2001 in Brooklin. The Foundation declared activity is the social scupture: "The Bruce High Quality Foundation, the official arbiter of the estate of Bruce High Quality, is dedicated to the preservation of the legacy of the late social sculptor, Bruce High Quality. In the spirit of the life and work of Bruce High Quality, we aspire to invest the experience of public space with wonder, to resurrect art history from the bowels of despair, and to impregnate the institutions of art with the joy of man’s desiring. Professional Challenges. Amateur Solutions."
Hu Jieming was born in 1957 in Shanghai. He graduated from Shanghai Light Industry College, Fine Art Department in 1984. He resides and works in Shanghai. ARTIST: Hu Jieming TITLE: Raft of the Medusa MEDIUM: Colour coupler print YEAR: 2002
ARTIST:Joel Peter Witkin TITLE: Raft of the George W. Bush MEDIUM: b&w print YEAR: 2006 Witkin made this manifesto photograph against the politics of former U.S. president , George W.Bush. Accordingly to the artist: "There are many parallels to the Raft of the Medusa and the Presidency of George W. Bush. The Captain of the Medusa was an incompetent, a nobleman who owed his appointment to the ministerial favor and not seamanship. George W. Bush is also incompetent, a rich man's son who gained the presidency through favor and deceit, rather than statesmanship. As politician and president, he is a demagogue, a leader who make use of popular prejudices, false claims and promises in order to gain and hold power. Both these men, the captain of the Medusa, Hugnes de Chaumareges and George W. Bush are murderers.
The making of the Raft of the Medusa was the result of the "the Captain and many of his senior officers who, caring only for their own safety, brutally commandeered the seaworthy life boats, leaving it to the lower ranks and the soldiers to try their luck on a raft." The abandoned people left on the ship built a raft sixty five feet in length and twenty-eight feet wide out of the masts and beams, crudely lashed together before the Medusa sank. One hundred and fifty people, including one woman, were herded into the slippery beams. So closely were the people huddled together that it was impossible to move a single step. Mutiny, murder, cannibalism and madness followed. After fifteen days, only fifteen survived The people on the Medusa were victims of class struggle. The people on the Raft of George Bush-his party and regime-are the victims of their own rationale, their conservative elitism, their hunger for political and social power and their unilateral military ambitions. It took a very sick group of people to dream up a phony war from the tragedy of 9/11, against a country which had nothing to do with 9/11. In my photograph, I want to show the leaders of this regime as royalty without clothes. As the fools they really are. The president is seen wearing a McDonalds gold paper crown. His despair is the result of a mind distorted by extremism. By the lies, torture, pain and death he has caused. He is the Lear of all inept politicians. He holds the naked body of "Condi Rice". She is his ideal black woman. His brain-dead muse. Secretary of Defense "Rummy" lies face down nearby, holding his glasses, wrapped in a flag of the nation. Former Secretary of State Powell is pictured dressed only in military epaulets holding the "proof" he presented at the United Nations for justification for the war against Iraq. The vice-president and his wife are shown as an operatic star and diva straining to proselytize their doctrines in song. Barbara Bush is tied to a mast. She holds a un-reflector under her chin-representing her joy in basking in the sunlight of power yet always looking like "The Quaker Oats Man". Near her is a conservative minister trying to hang himself while a sailor performs fellatio on him. Finally, an African American waves the flag of his mother country as he sights the Medusa's survivors, a Chinese junk and a Space Ship."
ARTIST:Gerald Rancinan TITLE: Raft of Illusions MEDIUM: photography YEAR: 2009 "There's really no difference between an artist of the 15th century and a photographer working today," Rancinan told The Associated Press in an interview. "Our job is to be witnesses of what's happening in society and show it to the world." The raft of Rancinan is his view of migration, and is capturing desperate people who wash up onto Europe's shores daily.
