Battle for the Golden Horseshoe Cal Poly snapped a three-game “Horseshoe Classic” losing streak with a 28-20 victory over UC Davis last year in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. The Aggies won 23-10 in 2009 at home, rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat Cal Poly 22-21 in 2010 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium and also won 24-17 in 2011 at home. Cal Poly won three straight from 2006-08 and the Aggies won the first two games of the Battle for the Golden Horseshoe -- 20-13 in 2005 and 36-33 in 2004. UC Davis holds a 5-4 advantage in the “Battle for the Golden Horseshoe.” In 2004, the two schools’ student-run spirit clubs, Mustang Maniacs and the Aggie Pack, came together to sponsor a perpetual trophy that resides with the team that wins each year. The horseshoe-shaped trophy signifies the agricultural influence at both universities. Although the trophy was established in 2004, the two teams have met for football games 37 times. UC Davis leads the series 19-17-2. From 2001-05 and in 2007 and 2010, the visiting team won each time. The series began in 1939 with UC Davis posting a 28-0 shutout at Davis. Cal Poly returned the favor in 1940 with a 27-0 victory in San Luis Obispo. The two teams have met every year since 1978. Seventeen of the games in the series have been decided by seven points or less.
