The Tesco Showroom and calnewiltshire.com Robin Robson has a huge input into the running of the Showroom and the town website- calnewiltshire.com. Some of his thoughts and innovations.

Commerce and the W.I. have put the venue to good use. It was nice to see Sue Peskett of the Rotary manning the showroom too”.

“I’ve enjoyed my time at the Showroom and I’ve been helped by Chris Robins in the main and more latterly Judy Hallimond. Chris has used her time to develop markets at the Showroom and in the town centre. Judy has been a driving force in the ‘Morsbags’ promotions to reduce plastic use. I’ve tried to focus on Showroom promotion and the website”.

“The website is something I work on and try to develop. I’m always asking for articles and interesting news locally. I’ve just launched ‘Calne Local Offers’ as a new concept. The website is there for booking the showroom, markets and you can advertise your business also. There is a ‘What’s On’ that people are checking out more and more. I’m now building the Club’s Page on the website. Good to see that my work has been utilised and has grown”.

“Laptop Tuesdays is something I’m really proud of. Two Tuesday’s a month we open the Showroom Door to local businesses to ‘Hot Desk’ and interact. It has been a great way for people to meet and work in a different environment. Especially for those who are self employed/work alone. People have arranged meetings and given them a different venue for their work. Quite a few businesses have used the Showroom for meetings and being able to advertise themselves at the same time. Calne Artist Enjoying Success at the Tesco Town Showroom The Town showroom is now in consistent use with businesses and good causes taking advantage of the facility. We asked one of the regular attendees, Artist Nellie Hearn, to comment on their Show Room experiences. “We have been exhibiting at The Pop-Up Shop for two days per month since May 2018. We cannot believe the reception we receive from the residents of Calne. Every month is better for us, with more new customers and numerous repeat business”.

There have been numerous Pop-Up Shops, Local Charities, Sunday Markets and Promotions this year so far. Use of the Show Room can ber linked to advertising on the calnewiltshire.com website and the Calne Guide.

“The booking process is simple, reasonably priced, one can have it for just a few hours, a day or a week, it’s a fabulous venue”. “Calne really has a fantastic community spirit; other market towns need to take a leaf out of their book. We will be there again on Friday 31st of May and Saturday 1st of June”. We have pictured some of the art that has excited local customers. They are Donald, Burst of Morning Colour and Ronald. You can check out more of this fantastic art at artistnelliehearn.co.uk. You can book the showroom on calnewiltshire.com which has an array of prices. If things don’t quite fit your model, then please email calnesprings@mail.uk or call 07932 156397 to talk things through.

7th March 2019 Calne Community Area Fairtrade Group As of Thursday 28th February 2019 CALNE has been declared a FAIRTRADE TOWN Calne Community Area Fairtrade Group has been promoting Fairtrade in Calne and the surrounding area for many years. The Campaign to achieve Fairtrade Town Status intensified in January 2017, with a structured plan to attempt to meet the Fairtrade Foundation’s criteria for an initial award within two years. A Fairtrade Town application supported by a large portfolio of evidence was submitted to the Fairtrade Foundation at the beginning of January this year. This announcement was timely, as the

group was about to mount its keynote Fairtrade Fortnight Event at Calne Library on the forthcoming Saturday 2nd March. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor were present throughout the Event. Stan Woods, chairman of the group said: “Having achieved Fairtrade Town Status we now have to work to build on, expand and keep it by continuing to raise Fairtrade’s profile to more and more organisations throughout the town and the surrounding parishes,

including schools, retailers, caterers, businesses, the parish councils and societies and clubs.” 2019 heralds the 40th Anniversary of Traidcraft (a pioneer Fairtrade goods importer, wholesaler and retailer) in the UK, and the 25th Anniversary of the Fairtrade Foundation’s FAIRTRADE Mark.

The Fairtrade Group in Calne Library with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor (left to right): Adrienne Darts, Jenny Woods, Caroline Foster, Ros Mills, Jenny Colby, Cllr. Glenis Ansell, Cllr. Robert Merrick, Penny Errill, Colette Som, David Evans, and Stan Woods (Chairman).

Simple Things In Business Sometimes it is the simple things that can help a business succeed but it is interesting how many businesses miss them.

Starting a business is about planning, knowing your costs and if there is a real want for your product or service: • • •

What is the long-term goal? Have you done a customer survey? If you are running a shop, then what are the busiest times for foot traffic?

What seems like a great idea may need re-thinking before plunging in. Existing businesses ideally need to review themselves consistently to adapt to changes. A crucial part of this is to find out why your customer has approached you, or popped in, and even where from. On good old

Dragons Den many years ago, a man had devised a chip to go into slot machines. It monitored not only when the coins went in but what times of the day. He knew which days were his busiest and which machines obviously were favoured. It allowed him to alter his opening times and understand when more staff were needed. No guessing required. Sometimes you can customer service a person to the point of giving bad customer service. Listening is probably the most important skill and saying thank you goes a long way even if you don’t do business with someone. The real hope is for businesses in Calne to

thrive and there are very successful businesses in Calne. Many will take the time to give helpful advice, share experiences and how they overcame similar challenges. Calne Chamber will be doing a big relaunch and promotion in the latter part of 2019. The Chamber is looking for Business People who can give a few hours a month to interact and help other businesses. The Chamber have had a fantastic success rate of achievement in the last few years and are looking for new members to take it to the next level. Contact calnesprings@mail.uk to register

Great West Way is Gaining Momentum The Great West Way vision is to create one of the world’s premier touring routes between London and Bristol. The programme has been funded by £1million from the UK Government’s Discover England Fund . VisitWiltshire are leading the project. The justification for this investment is explained by the facts that the latest Government statistics show that Wiltshire Tourism is worth £1.6 billion, supports 29,159 jobs, which is 9% of total employment in Wiltshire. Tourism is also one of the fastest growing sectors of the UK economy.

The event was attended by James Gray, our local MP, Peter Wragg, Chairman of VisitWiltshire, David Andrews, Chief Executive of VisitWiltshire, Councillor Glenis Ansell Mayor of Calne, Councillor Robert Merrick Deputy Mayor of Calne and David Dillamore, Leader of the Calne GWW Tourism Group in Calne Our Place.

The Great West Way Tourism Route is gaining momentum and is becoming well known in national and selected international markets. In Calne we face serious competition from more affluent towns along the GWW but we are fortunate to have many hidden gems to attract more visitors to spend some time and money in Calne and surrounding parishes.

On April 5th, the newly installed GWW branded Welcome to Calne signs were chosen to be featured as part of the England Tourism Week celebrations. Calne is the first town on the Great West Way to have the GWW logo on their Welcome signs.

Not the winning but the taking part When you enter Calne Recreation Ground from Anchor Road you will find a plaque commemorating Walter Goodall George who held the world record for running the mile, a time that stood for nearly 30 years. RiverView Portfolio Ltd Producing the annual accounts and managing the tax liability is vital for every business. RiverView Portfolio Ltd offers more than just ‘number crunching’. The purpose of every business is to make profit and money, and at RiverView Portfolio Ltd we work with you to plan and control your business to achieve your goals. By careful tax planning during the year, the tax that you pay should be minimal. Cash and profit are not, however, the only consideration. In order to be satisfied with your business and to gain a sense of achievement, your work / life balance must remain a clear goal. The Practice maintains the balance of being owner-managed, whilst having the size and expertise to handle almost any instruction it receives. We have offices in Calne, Devizes and Tetbury, and regularly visit Cheltenham and other Wiltshire and Gloucestershire towns. Wherever possible, we agree a fixed fee for our work so that you know in advance what your costs will be. This allows you unlimited direct contact with your consultant accountant by telephone and email. First established in 1986 in London and the Southern Home counties, we are now based in Wiltshire.

CALNE TOWN GUIDE

The intention will be to do four editions in 2019 with a special summer edition. This year the summer edition will be a celebration of the Calne Bike Meet. It will be an incorporation of the Calne Bike Meet Magazine and the Calne Guide. It will inform the town of this year’s schedule and activities. Check out www.calnebikemeet.com for updates on the 2019 event.

The magazine will be closely working with the town website on

www.calnewiltshire.com and will also be available up at the Tesco Showroom.
