The statistics contained in these rankings are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc. (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates that a stallion has been pensioned, an asterisk (*) that he has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere, a number sign (#) that he did not stand in California in 2009 but is standing in the state in 2010, a double dagger (‡) that he is not standing in California in 2010 but will stand in the state in 2011 and in bold that he is a freshman sire. In all cases, a sire will remain in the rankings until the year after his last California foals are two-yearolds. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates only.

Weekly Update Successful Opening Day For Santa Anita Park

Thirtyfirststreet First In California Breeders’ With a perfectly timed move along the rail, Thirtyfirststreet rallied to nail odds-on favorite Arresting Officer at the wire to win the $100,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes for Californiabreds at Santa Anita Park on December 26. Thirtyfirststreet is the first Calbred stakes winner by Good Journey, out of the Sky Classic mare Avian, was bred by Doug

O’Neill and Mark Gorman, is owned by Gorman and Sterling Stable and is trained by Doug O’Neill. He was coming off a Nov. 20 maiden win in his second start and now has earnings of $90,400. Thirtyfirststreet ran the seven furlongs in 1:22.20, went off at odds of 5-1 and won by a neck over Arresting Officer, with Contemplated third.

California Nectar Drinks Up California Nectar rolled past odds-on favorite Teddy’s Promise to a rapid win in the $100,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes for California-bred 2-yearold fillies at Santa Anita Park on December 27. California Nectar is by Stormy Atlantic, out of the Carson City mare Absolute Nectar, was bred by Pablo and Michelle Suarez, is owned by Suarez Racing and trained by Doug O’Neill. She has two wins in six starts,

With a new track surface in place, Santa Anita Park opened the doors for its 74th winter/spring meet Dec. 26 with 34,268 fans in attendance for a nine-race program that included four stakes. The track opened on schedule, despite having endured 14 1/4 inches of rain over the past nine days, including three quarters of an inch overnight before the opener. “I’ll have to admit, I was a little nervous last night,” said Santa Anita president George Haines. “To be able to open on schedule and put on a world-class show as we did today, is incredibly gratifying. This was a great day for our fans and our horsemen. Due to the weather we’ve experienced, we faced some very significant challenges and we proved that this new track can handle just about anything. The racing was terrific and although we had some fast times, we had no problems during any of the races, and that is more important to us than anything else.” Haines said the track’s performance on opening day 2010 illustrated that the Southern California oval still one of the nation’s premier sporting venues. “I think it’s safe to say that we again demonstrated in a very profound way that our fans will continue to support Santa Anita in a big way on our big days. We’re very hopeful we can build on the momentum we generated today and carry it through the entire meet. As much as anything else, I think it was imperative for us to show our fans and horsemen that we are back in business. Despite the fact we took on an unprecedented amount of rain leading into our opener, the new surface, as well as the plant, came through with flying colors.” On-track wagering totaled $3,851,594 and total mutuel handle reached $11,707,276.—www.Blood-Horse.com PUBLISHER’S NOTE: This article has been republished with permission from www.Bloodhorse.com

earnings of $123,800 and was coming off a fourth in the Nov. 28 Miesque. She ran the seven furlongs in 1:21.66 and won by 1 ½ lengths with Warren’s Flyer second and Bathing Beauty third in the field of seven.

James Vreeland, a successful California owner, died Dec. 20 of cancer at his Buellton, Calif., home. He was 65. Vreeland, whose family was involved in the car industry while he was growing up in Michigan, owned a car dealership in Buellton and advertised himself as “Mr. Nobody.” The slogan must have worked because Vreeland proved successful in the car business. Vreeland raced 11 stakes winners alone and in partnership, including graded winners Devious Boy, Evening Promise, Islay Mist, and Untouched Talent. Vreeland was the breeder of added-money winner Test the Waters. Survivors include sons Dan and Jim Jr. and daughter Pam.—www.Blood-

Weekly Update In Memoriam: Don and Jean Engel Stronach To Give Up MID Real Estate The Reuters News Service is reporting that owner-breeder Frank Stronach is working out a deal in which he would relinquish control of his real estate company in exchange for some of its racetrack assets. Stronach, who holds a controlling voting stake in the company, MI Developments, is prepared to exchange his control of the $800 million real estate development company for some of its horse racing track assets, Reuters reported, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the deal. The deal, which will swap his special voting shares in the company for the racing assets, is expected to get the support of some of the firm’s big shareholders like hedge funds Farallon Capital and David Einhorn’s Greenlight Capital, according to Reuters. Under the deal, Stronach would no longer control the board, and a new board would be elected by the new shareholders, Reuters reported, noting that the sources asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak with the media about the talks. MI Developments shares rose 4.4 poercent on the New York Stock Exchange and its Toronto Stock Exchange-listed stock was halted pending news. Stronach, who is founder of auto parts company Magna International Inc., may still retain a smaller stake in the company after the deal, which could be announced as soon as this week and is expected to close by April 2011, one of the people said. MID owns Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields, Gulfstream Park (including an interest in The Village at Gulfstream Park, a joint venture with Forest City Enterprises, Inc.), The Maryland Jockey Club (Pimlico and Laurel), Portland Meadows, AmTote and XpressBet, and through some of these assets, is a supplier, via simulcasting, of live horseracing content to the inter-track, off-track and account wagering markets.—www.BloodHorse.com

Longtime California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) members Don and Jean Engel of Rohnert Park died on Dec. 6. They were both 85 years old. Don Engel was a breeder, consignor, bloodstock agent and publisher during his half-century of the in involvement Thoroughbred industry. A former high school teacher and newspaper sports editor, the Texas native operated Honey Lake Farm Thoroughbred during the 1960s and created his own marketing and advertising business, Thoroughbred Information Agency (TIA), in 1966. He published “The TIA Newsletter” as an industry watchdog vehicle until 2007, in 1997, and established a vast portal website for stallion, farm and business owners at www.thoroughbredinfo.com in 1997. The website is now operated by Lisa Groothedde, who acquired TIA from Engel upon his retirement in 2008. The Engels were frequent consignors at California auctions. Among the notable horses they sold were the grade II winner Amber Ever, who commanded a state record $800,000 purchase price for a filly in training during a 1982 dispersal of Hastings Harcourt’s equine holdings, and the stakes producer Mitzi, who set a state record weanling price of $67,000 in 1973. The couple also sold Harcourt’s stakes-winning broodmare Bold Captive for a record $350,000; the Relaunch foal she was carrying in utero during the dispersal was the 1986 Breeders’ Cup

California-Bred Flashback Young Flyer On December 27, 1986, Young Flyer, a daughter of Flying Paster, won the $100,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes for 2-year-old California-bred fillies at Santa Anita, with Saros Brig second and Dance All Summer finishing third in a field of nine. Young Flyer was trained by Neil French and ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye. She ran the seven furlongs in 1:24 on a fast track and won by two lengths at odds of 3-1. Young Flyer was the third of 16 foals out of the Youth mare Youthful Lady, who also produced stakes winners Young and Daring, Ladies Cruise, Lady Pastor and Young Beau. The California Breeders’ Champion was Young Flyer’s second win in four starts. She also won the Turkish Trousers Stakes and placed in four other stakes, finishing her career with four wins in 24 starts and earnings of $215,000. Young Flyer was bred by Mr. and Mrs. John Mabee, was foaled at and owned by their Golden Eagle Farm in Ramona. As a broodmare, Young Flyer had eight foals, including Grade I winners River Flyer and Victory Ride and the stakes-placed First Flyer and Lovely Pet.

CTBA Magazine Update The January 2011 issue of California Thoroughbred, the official publication of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA), is now in the final stages of production and is scheduled to be mailed out to its subscribers and the CTBA membership at the end of next week. Featured as this edition’s cover story is Donald and Karen Cohn’s 220-acre Ballena Vista Farm in Ramona, California, where the addition after the 2010 breeding season of the River Edge Farm sires Benchmark, Bertrando, Dixie Chatter and Tribal Rule to a stallion roster that already included Idiot Proof and Sea of Secrets now makes this pristine facility even more of a major player in the Golden State’s Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry. Besides this article, the latest magazine also includes many other feature stories of interest, such as: a preview of Sunshine Millions IX, the day of six stakes races worth $1.8 million exclusively to California-breds and Florida-breds being held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia and Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida, on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011; a CTBA Member Profile on Peter and Barbara Walski, the owners of California stallion Awesome Gambler and whose homebred filly Faisca was a stakes winner earlier this year; an analysis of those stallions who are retiring to stud in California or have been relocated to the Golden State for next year’s breeding season; a preview of next year’s Barretts January Mixed Sale that will be held at Fairplex in Pomona on Monday, Jan. 24; a wrapup of the win by the seven-year-old Cal-bred gelding Cost of Freedom in Hollywood Park’s grade III, $100,000 Vernon O. Underwood Stakes on Nov. 25, 2010; reviews of the stakes wins by Cal-breds Dance With Gable and Ultra Blend, as well as a second blacktype victory by Cost of Freedom, at Hollywood Park this past month; an Industry Insight editorial on the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), the Thoroughbred charity that derives the majority of its revenues through a percentage of racing revenues in California; a story about the dual stakes-winning Cal-bred Cost of Freedom who is now working wonders in Texas with Grant and Greta Hays and their autistic sons, Jack and Dylan; a Down on the Farm article with a title of “Eye Injuries In Horses” that provides a wealth of information on this subject; the biographies and mission statements of the five CTBA members who are on the ballot for the 2011 election to the association’s Board of Directors; a Guest Forum piece on Tell, the 1969 Hollywood Derby winner who lived out his life in California as a successful sire; and all the many other interesting and informative features, departments and columns that the publication’s loyal readers look forward to every month. So now is the time to secure valuable advertising space in the February 2011 copy of California Thoroughbred, the monthly publication that remains the best medium for marketing Thoroughbred stallions, farms and businesses in the Golden State. To ensure participation in this next issue, please contact the CTBA’s Advertising Manager Loretta Veiga without further delay at either Loretta@ctba.com Loretta@ctba.com or (626) 445-7800, extension 227. Arrangements can then be made to secure the placement in this magazine of a high quality, competitively priced advertisement that’s certain to provide the maximum possible exposure to your services and/or products on offer. —Rudi Groothedde rudi@ctba.com
