Pari-mutuel wagering is the only interstate wagering currently permitted on the internet but three states have legalized intrastate online gaming – Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey – to permit people physically within their respective borders to participate. Several online gaming bills have been introduced in this Congress, including those to license, regulate and tax the activity. However, the NTRA Legislative team does not expect any immediate action by Congress on this issue.—NTRA www.ctba.com

CHRB Elects Officers For 2014 California’s seven racing commissioners voted unanimously Thursday for Commissioner Charles “Chuck” Winner to serve as Chairman of the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) beginning January 6, 2014, the date that current Chairman David Israel’s final term will expire. The commissioners also elected Commissioner Bo Derek to serve as 1st vice chair and Commissioner Richard Rosenberg to serve as 2nd vice chair. Chair Elect Winner presented Chairman Israel with a framed gavel

on behalf of their fellow commissioners and thanked him for his years of service on the board, especially for his tireless efforts this last year as chairman, indicating that “everybody who has anything to do with horse racing owes you a debt of gratitude.” Chairman Israel was appointed to the CHRB in July 2008 and reappointed in March 2010, marking 5 1/2 years of service. His parting advice to his colleagues and the industry was to “keep the sport clean and safe and it will find its audience.”—http://www.chrb.ca.gov/press_releases/2013_12_12_press_release.pdf, continued at www.chrb.ca.gov

Weekly Update The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Accredits 23 Facilities

Jockey Club Registration Due December 31 The Jockey Club reminds owners of unregistered yearlings and two-year-olds that the requirements for foal registration must be completed by December 31, 2013, to avoid additional late registration fees. The late registration fee increases from $550 to $800 after December 31 of the yearling year and from $800 to $2,025 after December 31 of the two-year-old year. Interactive RegistrationTM is the most efficient means to complete the Application for Foal Registration and other registration requirements. Interactive Registration enables customers to check the status of their applications and, through the Registration Center, view and resolve outstanding conditions of registration. —continued at https://www.registry.jockeyclub.com

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) has announced that 23 accredited facilities are now eligible to receive financial grants from the organization for the ongoing care of retired Thoroughbreds following the addition of 20 new facilities. The new facilities, which represent a cross-section of rescue, retirement, retraining, and adoption programs in the U.S. and Canada, join the first three accredited facilities—Florida Thoroughbred Retirement and Adoptive Care, New Vocations and Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue. Following a detailed application process and careful onsite examinations by TAA inspectors and independent veterinarians, each facility was judged to have met or exceeded the TAA Code of Standards in the areas of operations, education, horse care management, facility standards and services, and adoption policies and protocols, the TAA said in a release. —continued at www.BloodHorse.com,
