2012 KICK OFF MEETING It is hard to think about 2012 without looking back at 2011. Cal Tri fulfilled its vision of being a community service organization with a multisport habit. Many Cal Tri volunteers gave of their time and efforts to give something back to a sport that has so richly rewarded us all. For that we want to say thank you. It was nice to kick so much booty in our first year. The RD at TriEvents said in her 30 years what Cal Tri did at Bonelli was unprecedented. Lets do it again, right?

Newsletter Objective The Cal Tri newsletter’s primary objective is bringing the world of triathlon in California closer to home. The newsletter focuses on Cal Tri members, upcoming events, affiliated clubs, races and training and focuses on what Cal Tri members want to know about. It is a member driven publication so share your items of interest and they may end up in the next edition.

COACH CRAIG’S RACE TIP So here we are at the beginning of the year. You’ve likely been laying out a plan for your assault on the 2012 triathlon season, and if you haven’t started thinking about 2012, it’s time to start. However, we’re still at the beginning of the year and there are likely months before your first race of the season. With races so far off, I recommend setting an intermediate goal over these next few months to stay motivated to get out in the cold (that’s a relative term, since we live in California...sub 65 is cold, right?) and work towards building a platform to launch off for the start of the next tri-season. There are many approaches you can take during these early months to make effective use of your time. Whatever your approach is, I recommend you set a goal that will help you in some aspect of your triathlon racing in 2012. Focusing on a single sport can be a fun and very worthwhile winter diversion from regular triathlon training. And by single sport, I mean swimming, biking, or running...not badminton. This approach is particularly worthwhile if the sport is a limiter, i.e. the sport that has been particularly limiting your performance in races. For example, if your inner gazelle has been itching to get out, the winter is a perfect time to devote 8-12 weeks of preparation to run a distance you’ve never attempted before or to set a personal record in a shorter 5km or 10km event... not only will you finish the winter with a new accomplishment, but you’ll be prepped to run faster off the bike when the regular tri-season starts back up again. Did I mention that you should be excited about however you choose to spend your time this winter? That’s one of the keys to keep motivation... so find something that is meaningful to you and commit to it. - Coach Craig

UCSD Member Spotlight

Bill Jones, president of a great Southern California UC San Diego Triathlon Club. Here is a spotlight moment: 1. Tell us what is unique about the UCSD Triathlon Team. First off, we are honored to be Thom’s “first”, and by Thom’s first I mean the first club to be featured in the first California Triathlon newsletter. Back to the question; the most unique aspect of the UCSD Triathlon Team is our commitment to sustainability. We are directing two sustainable competitions each season. In winter, we host Tritonman, a sprint triathlon, and in spring we host the Grove Run trail run (actually with the addition of a fall aqualthon this year we are now directing three sustainable races). The May, 2009 Grove Run was the most sustainable running race ever documented based upon our certification score from the Council for Responsible Sport and was southern California’s first documented “green race”. Competitions bring athletes together, and sustainable competitions show athletes and the community-at-large that sports are more fun and fulfilling when environmental, socially, and physical health are considered. Our green races are an example of a sustainable relationship between triathlon and the environment – and we encourage other triathlon clubs and race directors to follow our lead! In fact, several other triathlon teams in the WCCTC (collegiate conference) are now focusing on making their races more “green”. “Green” racing is catching on fast! 2. What are some of the best ways California Triathlon can support you? Thom driving a van full of bikes to Alabama for us! Actually, we are always looking for support. One of the best ways to support us is to compete in our races! This will most directly help us get to Nationals! There is also volunteering at our races – we could have a California Triathlon booth or aid station at our Tritonman race in February. Another great way would be to help us find lodging when we travel up to LA our collegiate races. And of course organizing and inviting us to group rides - we are thinking of doing an “in town” cycling camp toward the end of January so perhaps we could organize a long ride together (Palomar?). I’ll keep brainstorming of more ways! 3. Every club has an outrageous tale or member. What is UCSD’s? I want to highlight Tim Ray as UCSD’s most “outrageous” team member. “The Great Timothy Ray” was outrageous for not only the crazy things he did (like running 100 mile races), but for his “larger-than-life” presence on the planet. Tragically, Tim suffered a heart attack and passed away in May of this year – but is remembered by his competitive spirit, environmental passion, and near-infinite charity. Within the UCSD triathlon team the only things that eclipsed his dedication and impressive race performances were his camaraderie and the energy he put forth reducing the team’s environmental impact. Tim focused especially on making our team’s races more sustainable and was the driving force behind our green initiative. What made Tim stand out to me was that his dream was his reality; he didn’t just dreamed of making the world a better place, he carried it out everyday - from the small things he did to reduce his carbon footprint to his willingness to listen and discuss anything and everything with anyone, Tim Ray was truly larger than life.
