Onsen 2016 | Bathing Vancouver Studio | George Wagner (tutor) - selected for The Architectural Review Drawing Foilo, July 2016 - present at the AIBC convention, 2016 - film (opposite) selected for the Rio Theatre’s Amature film festival Water is the lifeblood of Vancouver. From sea to the sky water remains omnipresent. The ocean, liquid, creates the arteries through which Vancouver is fed. The mountains, ice, solid, provide escape from the city. And the third, cloud, gas, provide not a resource, or escape but a sense of the season. The cloud, perhaps the one that most effects our daily life. It is paradoxically the one we cannot interact with. As we move towards, it moves away. Like opposite ends of a magnet. This project acknowledges those three states. It lends itself to the experience of each. Because that is why Vancouverites come to the bathhouse. For the escape, the experience of something other than their normal bath curtains.

Comprehensive Studio 2017 | with Qin Yin | Bill Pechet (tutor) Harbour Air, a predominantly seaplane based airline based in Richmond, BC. Their new terminal is the site for our comprehensive project. From parti to detail, the project was thought and rethought to form a coalescence of the existing: the terminal and Flying Beaver restaurant. And new: a capsule hotel, spa and maintenance space. The seaplanes take front page centre, able to be seen from every other program. A public slope bisects the whole, promoting active engagement through and through the whole building and offering a fantastic lookout for the adjacent airport. As is tradition with comprehensive, the project was designed through and through. Idea, detail, structure and environmental systems were all considered during the intensive semester.

The Church of Latter Night’s Love 2015 | Elements of Design Studio | 2019 | Fairy Tales Competition | Blair Satterfield (tutor) “This might not end happily ever after, you know. Statistically, that is. Half of marriages end in divorce nowadays. And I count two of you so, well, do the math. I call it The Church of Latter Night’s Love, catchy, right? I figured because love, it seems, is either intensified by dawn, or it’s snuffed out. At least that’s how I’ve felt. Anyway, the church is pretty simple really. Just an aisle and an altar at the end. Nothing too special, really. Except, that is, that it might take you a long, long time to get to the altar. I’m not precisely sure of the extent. It didn’t always, started out small. That was 30, some odd years ago now. Jeez, I guess you might say we’ve made it the distance, haven’t we hon? Hallelujah! Spent every day and most night’s with her, just building one step at a time. Don’t even remember the last time I made it to the altar. Whew.”

Following their infamous heist of Las Meninas by the artist Velazquez, occupant 1 is lying low. (s)He lives in anonymity, with the bare essentials, Las Meninas and a grand table suitable for a celebration, never to occur. Their only connection to the outside world is through a lost boy who lives above. Their needs are these: Art Thief - A wall suitable for hanging a masterpiece. Measuring 318 cm x 276 cm. - A table for 20 people, preferably within view of the masterpiece.

Lost Boy - A pool and ample places to dive in from. - A platform which can be raised or lowered to allow or deny entry, powered by a John Deere 9410R tractor. 29

The Convivial City 2017 | abroad in Chandigarh, India | Roy Cloutier & Nicole Sylvia (tutors)

Chandigarh’s grid obsessively inserts itself into the home, the woods and the road. This is until reality takes hold of the wheel. The precise line of the facade interrupted by a temporary facade of cloths drying on the line. The tree grid taken over by invasive species, laxness and the unpredictable growth of each tree. Road lanes ignored by the absurdity that is Indian traffic. The unconscious traces of life permeate space and place. The arc of a gates swing lacerates the concrete, a cow sanctuary logically becomes host to a grain mill and temple. Surface beauty is found in gaudy gilding and in full bloom. A deeper beauty can be found in the parables of the quarks and experience of the individual.

India Sketches three books | 600+ pages Among many of the things I fell in love with in India was the process of sketching as method of documenting my time. Part sketchbook, part diary, part map, part memory trigger, part Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, part studio companion, part script, part scrapbook. The contents of the books attempt to be half as idiosyncratic and surprising as a walk down a typical Chandigarh street. Measuring just __ x ___ The books fit easily into my pocket, and would be carried around constantly. Whether walking down the street, at home before bed, on a bumpy tuk tuk ride, I was often found with my head buried in their pages. This format carries itself into the present day.

James K. M. Cheng Architects 2018 | 8 month position My responsibilities were broad and increasing in trust as my time at JKMC moved along. I began in the interior design department, with little responsibility. I moved into construction documentation and eventually drew up details from scratch. Finally I was placed in a fairly large team, working on proposal documentation and finally visualizing structural systems in 3D. The projects I worked on were: -

Shangri-La Toronto Lobby Renovation Fairmont Pacific Rim Lobby Renovation River Green Development ‘Smith’ Residence Chang Residence 123 Fake Street 3rd & Virginia (First Light)

45

First Light I worked on a 5 person team completing our Design Review Board (DRB) proposal for a 50 storey tower at 3rd and Virginia in Seattle. I completed options for balcony railing conditions, designed the mullion placement on the facade, assisted in a 300 page comprehensive proposal for the tower, and built a 3D version of the rooftop, catilever pool structure. Supervised by Mike Green & Veronica Omonte Casanova.

123 Fake St. Lobby Renderings R E S T A U R A N T

I produced lobby renderings for this new construction tower at 123 Fake St. Material choices were changed hourly, a realization that the staircase wouldn’t work to code in our first lobby scheme. The 3D linework was edited on the fly to accurately portray the new scheme.

‘Smith’ Residence Gatehouse I produced a tiny piece of this 20,000 square foot, 10 bedroom residence that has it’s own dedicated Majong room. Cool, eh? I studied what it might look like at various scales and showing it within context of the whole house. After approval from James I drafted construction details of that gate. And the week before I left we visited the fabricator where I saw the gates actually built from my drawings.

Scripts of the Everyday 2018 | M.Arch Thesis part 1 | Dr. Sherry Mckay (mentor) We the architect aim our sights high towards a utopian ideal of what could be. It’s in our nature. We the human fail everytime in our attempt to reach that lofty goal. It’s in our nature. We may yet strive to acknowledge this paradox. That we the architect, the one who builds, has less control of architecture than we the human. Through examinations of both the ideal and cacophonic states within architecture, we might find modes of production through which architecture can further engage with us, as humans. By letting go of the view of the architect as the singular genius, by combining contradictory architectural events to create muddled ways of inhabiting in space, and by exploring form through stories as well as drawings we might insert ourselves in-between existing modes of creating architecture. The resultant is something strange and familiar, of this world but fantastical. Seeped in narrative agency and a twist of the clichés through which we inhabit our world. We might find architecture as the stage in the theatre of the everyday.

Rewritten: The Living City 2016 | M.arch Thesis part 2 | Bill Pechet (chair), Roy Cloutier, Blair Satterfield, Nicole Sylvia (committee). “We want to rethink the place we call home. The architecture of our world. The way we connect. The way we work. The way we shop. The way we travel. The way we exercise. The way we eat and what we eat. The way we meet friends. The way we love. The way we listen to and what we listen to. The way we learn and are inspired. The way we create, experiment and explore. The way we see and try new things. The way we enjoy beauty. How we experience nature. The culture we are a part of. The footprint we leave – the way we live life.” Architecture, to put it simply, is about putting things in order, cleaning them up, making them right. Satire, as a sort of fiction, does just the opposite. Oakridge, as observed by this thesis, becomes the site of a satirical architecture, examining the absurd ideals through an anthology of moments challenging how we produce architecture, to whom it serves, what becomes of it when it’s passed through the meat grinder of construction and inhabitation. 61
