Three Caldwell County US 321 Intersections to be transformed to “Superstreet” Intersections in 2019 CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (September 18, 2017)…According to the NCDOT, Caldwell County will see road construction on US 321 as early as 2019. Three intersections will undergo a transformation to a “Superstreet” intersection design. (in graphic below, Mt. Herman Road/US 321 intersection)

What is a “Superstreet” design? A superstreet, also known as a restricted crossing U-turn (RCUT), J-turn, or reduced conflict intersection, is a type of road intersection that is a variation of the Michigan left. In this configuration, traffic on the minor road is not permitted to proceed straight across the major road or highway. What are the benefits of a “Superstreet” design? The so-called "superstreet" traffic design results in significantly faster travel times, and leads to a drastic reduction in automobile collisions and injuries, according to North Carolina State University researchers who have conducted the largest-ever study of superstreets and their impacts. What intersections? Mt. Herman Road/US 321 (TIP: U-4700CA - Project Cost: $2,170,000) Pine Mountain Road/US 321 (TIP: U-4700CB - Project Cost: $2,700,000) Mission Road/US 321 (TIP: U-4700CC - Project Cost: $2,750,000) We have put together a special US 321 Widening Project Website Page to help better explain the entire project. We have also put together an unofficial US 321 Widening Project Facebook Page. www.caldwelljournal.com/us-321-widening-project www.facebook.com/US321WideningProjectforCaldwellCounty

From the Caldwell Pregnancy Care Center September Newsletter By Machelle Kirby

We began seeking an OB/GYN. We searched and investigated, and we could not find a doctor in Caldwell County who was willing or able to commit the time it would take to our cause. We were beginning to think that we would have to start looking outside of our county, something that we really did not want to do, but we felt that having ultrasound available to our clients was worth this small sacrifice. That is when God moved! I received a call from Dr. Andra Kunkle, a board member and local pediatrician, giving me the name of a pediatrician who was moving here from Indiana to work at a local office. During her interview, it was revealed that her husband was an OB/GYN who had recently retired from practice in Indiana. What’s more, this couple were strong Christians who had a heart for missions!! To make a long story short, God brought us our Medical Director from Indiana AND God also brought us another pediatrician to stand along beside us. We now have Drs. Ed and Liz Reece joining our team. With Dr. Andra Kunkle’s faithful leadership on our board, with Dr. Ed Reece as our Medical Director, and with Dr. Liz Reece helping us develop a program for our babies – God has provided more than we ever asked for. I am so excited to see what the future holds for CPCC and the lives we can touch for His name!! We began searching for our Nurse Manager. We prayed for her diligently. This position could not be filled by just anyone who held a nursing degree. She had to not only stand by our mission but truly have a love for the ministry and the women she would minister to. Our nurse would be trained to perform the ultrasounds. She would be the link to us and what that woman would see on the screen when she viewed her precious baby for the first time. Also, because we are a ministry she would not be compensated in her salary for the amount her degree would otherwise mandate in the professional world – truly she had to have a heart for the cause. God sent us Leslie Bumgarner! (I will tell you more about her and the Reece’s in the following newsletter) Leslie’s first day was Tuesday, August 29th!! www.caldwellpregnancycare.org

Final co-defendant in Precision Sports, LLC break-in pleads guilty LENOIR, NC (September 15, 2017)…The third and final co-defendant from a break-in at a southern Caldwell County business pleaded guilty to the charges against him on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, and will spend at least six years in prison. Demareo Whitley, 29, of Charlotte, pleaded guilty to possession of stolen firearms and also admitted to his status as a habitual felon during Caldwell County Superior Court. He was sentenced to an active prison term of six to nine years by the Honorable Daniel A. Kuehnert, Superior Court Judge from Burke County. Whitley will serve his prison time in custody of the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections. The defendant’s admission to habitual felon status enhanced the prison sentence he was given by Judge Kuehnert. Whitley has prior felony convictions in Mecklenburg County for conspiracy to commit common law robbery, breaking/entering and larceny of a motor vehicle. Officers with Hickory Police Department responded to Precision Sports, LLC in southern Caldwell County around 4 a.m. on Sept. 7, 2015, for a security alarm check. Surveillance videos from the business showed a break-in at the business with numerous guns stolen. A tip from Charlotte led to an examination of cellular communications between Whitley and two other individuals by HPD Forensic Analyst Matt Rogers. Rogers’ analysis led to the recovery of some of the guns, identified by the business owners as those stolen. Demarco Lamont McDowell and Deveion Eugene Johnson also pleaded guilty to their involvement in the crimes in March 2017 and currently are serving their prison sentences. Jeff Pruett and John Patterson led the investigation for Hickory Police Department with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant District Attorney Nancy Lee prosecuted the case for the State.

Second Annual Get Moving Day LENOIR, NC (Sept. 20, 2017)…Caldwell County Health Department is hosting a county-wide “Get Moving Day” event on September 26th which promotes setting aside 30 minutes for physical activity and movement amongst all age groups. Movement can be walking, playing a sport, swimming, gymnastics, stretches, weight exercises, and much more. The goal of this day is to raise awareness about the importance of exercise and to encourage community participation. Exercise has a wide range of benefits and is necessary for physical fitness and good health. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that young people aged 6–17 years participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. According to the American Heart Association, physical activity helps with: * controlling weight * reducing blood pressure * raising HDL ("good") cholesterol * reducing the risk of diabetes and some kinds of cancer * improved psychological well-being, including gaining more self-confidence and higher self-esteem. Other benefits include increased relaxation, better sleep and mood, strong immune function, stress relief, and more. We encourage everyone in the community to participate in “Get Moving Day” by doing some type of exercise for at least 30 minutes. Whether it’s a relaxing walk, a yoga class, working out at the gym, doing chores around the house, participating in sports or another activity, make it your goal to set aside the time on “Getting Moving Day.” We also encourage those who participate to take pictures and send to kpfaff@caldwellcountync.org or post on social media, using the hashtag #CaldwellGetsMoving2017. If you have any questions regarding Get Moving Day, please contact (828)426-8462. Pooveys Chapel Baptist Church is sponsoring an Ignite the Passion marriage conference Friday, September 29 at 6:30pm at Club Cola Banquet Hall, 30 South Main Street, Granite Falls. The cost is $30 per couple which includes the conference and meal. Rick Cope will share how to build and grow the marriage you have always dreamed of. “Movies with Mike

Vive La Recurrence! by Mike Holsclaw (September 19th, 2017) Esprit De L'escalier - "Wit of the Staircase": "A sensitive man such as myself, overwhelmed by the argument leveled against him, becomes confused and can only think clearly again when he reaches the bottom of the stairs". Denis Diderot, the famed philosopher and encyclopedist, once made this remark because of his pique at a phenomenon we have all experienced: the tendency to think of the witty rejoinder or juicy bon mot hours after it would have done us some good to have said it. This experience is so common that it has come to be called the "wit of the staircase". I can certainly sympathize with Denis; in my own case, I often find that the day after a "Movie with Mike", I will be walking along when suddenly, apropos of nothing, a perfect topic of discussion, which I should have brought up with the group the night before, pops into my head. In frustration, I can only slap my forehead and say "doh!" In retrospect, it only stands to reason that I would have more than my fair share of moments like this; I've mentioned before how I have started to become a cognitive ruminant - I seem to need time to roll the observations of others around inside my pumpkin shell before I can synthesize what I've heard into some grand gestalt. Unfortunately, by the time I'm ready to share my profound insight, the people with whom I was conversing have all dispersed to the four corners of the earth. Now, however, I'm going to have the chance to rectify that situation; starting on October 10th, I'll be leading a discussion group on movies in the Hudson branch of the Library. The program will be called "Take Two" and, every second Tuesday of the month, at 6pm, I'll have the chance to revisit whatever we saw at "Movies with Mike" and, if I'm lucky, point out some perfectly obvious detail that should have slapped me in the face the night I watched the movie and not a week later! Nevertheless, hindsight being twenty-twenty and all that, I'm grateful for the chance to play catch-up; how often do we have the opportunity for a do-over, especially when it comes to proving that we're not as mentally sluggish as it may at first appear? Of course, revisiting the topics of conversation at our "Movies with Mike" is only the smallest fraction of what I hope we will be talking about. If things proceed as I anticipate, then we will take up a diverse and unpredictable range of subject matter regarding particular movies and cinema in general; many of the "usual suspects" will be in attendance and, when you get that crew together, you never know where the conversation is going to go! Just a few of the things that would be on my wish list to discuss: Is Aronofsky's "mother!" a brilliant glimpse inside the mind of the artist or a misogynistic mess? Why did this newest adaptation of "It" succeed where so many adaptations of Stephen King's work have failed? On the same topic, why did "The Dark Tower" fail? Are there any great dramas coming to the cineplex this fall that you're jazzed about? Do women really like "Wonder Woman" more than men? Finally, does anyone really care whether Daniel Craig keeps playing James Bond or not? As you can see, ultimately it won't matter if you are a regular attendee of "Movies with Mike" or not; if you like film and you like talking about film, then this will be the place to be! Frankly, I'm excited about this new endeavor; as much as I love watching a movie and talking about it later, I also like just starting a freeform conversation and seeing where the wind will take you. If you're intrigued, check us out; I'm proud to say that the folk who have become regulars at my first program are some of the nicest and most welcoming individuals I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, and I feel sure we will recreate that warm, non-judgmental environment here as well. Calling all movie lovers - lend us your ears (and your voices as well)! You'll know me when you see me; I'll be the guy with the striking resemblance to Orson Welles‌ Learn more about classic films and enjoy the magic of movies at Movies with Mike. Held the 1st Thursday of each month at 6:00pm downstairs at the Lenoir Library. This program is free and popcorn is provided! For more information, please call 828-728-4207. Dr. Herb will be missed greatly Last week, we lost one of our loyal contributors, Dr. Herb Cole. Dr. Herb went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 13th. He was not only a large portion of our paper but also our friend. We enjoyed our visits each month as we would discuss medical concerns, area developments, and any family news. He often shared his wisdom and advice with us concerning natural remedies and medicines. Dr. Herb has provided our readers with helpful tips on natural remedies for many years. We will miss him along with all the great contributions he made to our paper. There is absolutely no doubt in our minds that he is in Heaven right now! Dr. Herb was one of the strongest Christians that we have ever had the pleasure to know. Please keep the family in your prayers as they go through this difficult time. The Caldwell Journal sends our sincere condolences to the Cole family...Mark and Merri Lee Jackson

Delayed Harvest Trout Waters Open October 1 RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 18, 2017)…The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will implement Delayed Harvest Trout Waters regulations on 34 trout waters in 20 western North Carolina counties on Oct. 1. Prior to Oct. 1, Hatchery Supported Trout Waters regulations apply to these waters. Under Delayed Harvest Trout Waters regulations, no trout can be harvested or possessed from these waters between Oct. 1 and one half-hour after sunset on June 1, 2018. No natural bait may be possessed, and anglers can fish only with artificial lures with one single hook. An artificial lure is defined as a fishing lure that neither contains nor has been treated with any substance that attracts fish by the sense of taste or smell. The Wildlife Commission stocks Delayed Harvest Trout Waters from fall through spring with high densities of trout to increase anglers’ chances of catching fish. Delayed Harvest Trout Waters, posted with diamond-shaped, black-and-white signs, are popular fishing destinations for anglers who enjoy catchand-release trout fishing. The Commission reminds anglers fishing Delayed Harvest Trout Waters to help prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species, such as whirling disease, gill lice and didymo, by: ▪ Cleaning equipment of all aquatic plants and animals and mud ▪ Draining water from boat, live wells and equipment ▪ Drying equipment thoroughly ▪ Never moving fish, plants or other organisms from one body of water to another. For a complete list of Delayed Harvest Trout Waters, stocking dates, information on regulations and trout fishing maps, visit the Commission’s trout fishing page.
