Change Your Clock Change Your Battery HICKORY, NC (March 2, 2017)…Is your smoke alarm working? On Sunday, March 12 the spring time change will occur and this is a good time to make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working. “A working smoke alarm provides an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape. This is particularly important for those most at risk of dying in a home fire, such as children and seniors. Changing smoke alarm batteries once a year is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce these tragic deaths and injuries. In fact, a working smoke alarm nearly cuts in half the risk of dying in a home fire,” states Hickory Fire Chief Fred Hollar. Hollar continues “To save lives and prevent needless injuries, the Hickory Fire Department reminds the public to change the batteries in their alarms. If Hickory residents do not own a smoke alarm or need help changing the batteries, I encourage them to contact their fire department immediately to receive assistance.” Although a large percent of American homes has smoke alarms, many do not work because of dead or missing batteries. Non-working smoke alarms are robbing residents of the protective benefits these critical home fire safety devices were designed to provide. To check an alarm, firefighters recommend pushing the test button. The alarm should sound by the time you count to 10. Firefighters also suggest taking time to plan “two ways out” and to practice escape routes with the entire family. Have a question?...Call your local fire department.

Suggestions include: refundable tax credits for all based on age instead of advanced tax credits based on household income, expansion of Health Savings Accounts (HSA’s) which are paired with HSA eligible High Deductible health plans, repeal of the mandates for not having health insurance coverage, removal of the minimum essential benefits instead letting each State decide what constitutes those benefits, taxing employer sponsored coverage above the 90th percentile of current premiums similar to the “Cadillac” plan tax already in Obamacare and removal of Medicaid expansion which did not happen in North Carolina in the first place. One of the newest happenings are “silent tax returns” meaning you can choose not to answer on your taxes the question of whether or not you have health insurance coverage. Another recent change is for Short-term Health plans. Short-term Health is interim health coverage to fill in gaps between jobs, after graduation or for someone waiting until Annual Enrollment comes around again to enroll in an Individual Health plan. As of April 1, 2017, though, the longest term you’ll be able to get on those will now be up to 90 days at one time. You can renew a Short-term Health policy, but you must qualify medically to do so. It’s important to note that these policies do not cover pre-existing conditions, do not meet the ACA’s requirements for having coverage, and require medical underwriting. They are exactly what they say they are: a short-term solution for coverage. Despite all the rumblings in Washington of spikes in premiums, rising deductibles, and less carrier choices, more than 12 million people signed up for coverage for 2017. This shows there’s still a demand for coverage. Predictions for 2018 indicate coverage choices will remain about the same as in 2017. The Annual Enrollment time period will have a shortened window to enroll as well. Another prediction from the repeal of the ACA or from what Congress plans to do to it, is the removal of mandates to have insurance. Until the law is completely repealed and a new plan is in place, Continued on page 3...

those of us buying or working in the health insurance market are faced with possibly many unanswered questions about the future of individual health insurance. This much is certain for 2017, you can currently enroll on an Individual Health plan on or off the Marketplace if you have a Special Enrollment circumstance, if you have a business you can purchase a Group Health insurance policy for you and your employees, you can be exempt from the mandate (individually) if you have a Hardship Exemption, if you have no insurance you can purchase a Short-term Health insurance plan if you qualify medically, and you can keep your Grandfathered or Transitional health plan (group or individual). You can also purchase additional gap coverages such as Hospital Indemnity, Accident, Cancer, Disability, Critical Illness, Vision, or Dental plans. You can also use discount drug cards at your pharmacy. Many questions surround healthcare and health insurance, but there are plenty of resources you can use to navigate the complexities: healthcare.gov, reference materials at your local library or online, or your local insurance Agent. Take a little time, consider your options, and make your healthcare decision wisely. It goes without saying it’s never too early to start thinking about what you want to do for your healthcare coverage next year now. Seven N.C. schools getting a solar boost from Duke Energy…including Lower Creek Elementary School CHARLOTTE, NC (March 1, 2017)…As part of a $300,000 grant, Duke Energy today announced it would pay 100 percent of the funds needed to install a solar power system at seven North Carolina schools. Recipient schools: • East Chapel Hill High School, Chapel Hill – Orange County • Gaston Day School, Gastonia – Gaston County • Hickory Ridge High School, Harrisburg – Cabarrus County • Lower Creek Elementary School, Lenoir – Caldwell County • Olympic High School, Charlotte – Mecklenburg County • RS Central High School, Rutherfordton – Rutherford County • South Stokes High School, Walnut Cove – Stokes County Schools applied for the grants last year. Working with Raleigh-based nonprofit NC GreenPower and modeled after its Solar Schools program, the initiative will pay the installation costs for rooftop or top -of-pole mounted systems on school property. The program also provides monitoring equipment, training and curriculum to students and teachers.
“These systems will give students a chance to see solar power production firsthand and allow them to learn more about this energy resource,” said David Fountain, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president. ”North Carolina is second in the nation for installed solar power. These seven schools will now be part of the state’s success story.” Continued on page 7...

Dr. Herb Says….Stay healthy with nature Magnesium: The Calcium Problem Excess calcium is a vastly widespread problem, as Excess calcium DEPLETES magnesium from the body, and as a result brings about all of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency. At this point, it will be unimportant how much magnesium you consumed, but how much is left in your body. If you feel your body is out of balance and isn’t functioning right (with some symptoms and manifesting), I would suspect excess calcium especially if you have been supplementing it. Remember, calcium and magnesium need to be in the correct proportions for your own needs, otherwise the calcium turns from a nutrient into a pollutant causing heart disease, arthritis, hardening of the arteries, senility, osteoporosis and calcification of organs and tissues that eventually completely degenerate. For this very reason excess calcium can become a real problem, while excess magnesium, on the other hand, is not of any concern. Unlike calcium, magnesium does not build up in the body, as excess is eliminated. Take the following example: What country has the highest rate of pasteurized milk consumption? That’s right: America. Now, what country has the highest rate of consuming calcium supplements? Correct again: America. So, America must have the lowest occurrence of osteoporosis (calcium loss & bone fragility) of all countries? Right?... Wrong! We have the highest rate! Why? Excess calcium combined with low magnesium. A lethal combination indeed. Taking more calcium will not fix a calcium deficiency, which is quite evident from the statistics. It is magnesium that will handle the calcium deficiency as well as the magnesium deficiency itself (it w ill dissolve any excess calcium from the body, while helping any needed calcium to assimilate.) The Heart Connection Did you know that without sufficient magnesium you would actually die? Your heart will stop beating and the doctors will then call it “a heart attack” (#1 cause of death in America). Never do they say, “He died from a Magnesium Deficiency.” This is how critical it is to have proper magnesium levels in the body. The early signs of such terminal extinction are racing heart-beats, or any unusual change in heart beats, angina pains, collapsing from exhaustion after heavy physical exercise or work such as running a race, playing football or basketball. Due to lack of magnesium the heart muscle develops a spasm or cramp and stops beating. This is because there is insufficient magnesium to relax the heart ready for the next contraction. Irregular heartbeats are also caused by magnesium deficiency. Drink some magnesium and it will go away. PMS & Osteoporosis PMS is mostly a magnesium deficiency. Too much calcium and not enough magnesium causes PMS. Instant relief can be obtained by taking the magnesium drink. When it comes to Osteoporosis, magnesium is crucial in regulating bone density, as it is magnesium, which allows calcium to assimilate. Calcium alone is useless and potentially harmful.

Dr. Herb Says….stay healthy with nature Minerals and Trace Minerals Minerals are essential to human life. Minerals help the body to quickly and accurately perform its activities. They are needed for proper composition of body fluids, the formation of blood and bone, and the maintenance of healthy nerve function. Unfortunately, studies show that 92% of our population is mineral deficient. According to Dr. R. Schiffer, in Las Vegas, NV, “In the research I have conducted as a doctor of Chiropractic and my knowledge gained over the years, I have found that trace minerals are very important in every chemical reaction that takes place in the human body. They either take active part in the reaction or act as a catalyst to a reaction. When the body becomes depleted in minerals, these reactions also slow down and allow a disease process to take over, destroying the physical structure. I have also found that the way food crops are being raised today depletes the soil of life giving minerals more so than vitamins. Forty years ago, farmers used to rotate their crops and allow soil to be refurbished. Today this crop rotation is forgotten to the point that our food supply is being devitalized in even fresh foods. Food no longer tastes the same as it did even twenty-five years ago because of the mineral content being absent. Mineral supplementation with an active trace minerals would be of great benefit to the human race forced to live in this stress filled environment we have.” Dr. Schiffer first used a liquid trace mineral concentrate from the Great Salt Lake on his wife when she shattered bones in her spine in a car accident. He found that her bones healed faster. Dr. James Balch, author of Prescription for Nutritional Healing says, “These minerals are fundamental to the healing of all kinds of different diseases, and more importantly, keep us well so we don’t get sick.” Mental stability, thought process, and reaction to stressful situations appear to be greatly dependent on proper trace mineral balance in the body. Vitamins appear to function better if proper mineral are present. Children need minerals to develop strong teeth, bones and bodies. Adults need minerals to remain active, healthy, and full of energy. It is important that mineral supplements be water soluble to be absorbed. Many people have used the popular liquid colloidal mineral products. While these are generally well absorbed, ionic minerals on the other hand, are much smaller; therefore, more easily absorbed. Minerals must enter the blood stream in order to work. One authority compares colloidal minerals to the size of a baseball and ionic minerals to a pea. Ionic minerals are found in the waters of the Great Salt Lake. The history behind using trace minerals from salt or sea waters began with the Shoshone Indians. They used the waters of the Great Salt Lake for medicinal purposes and strongly believed in its healing powers. They depended on the minerals in the lake, not on the white doctors to heal them. For 30 years, manufacturers have tapped in to the water of the Great Salt Lake to produce mineral supplements. The vast lake has accumulated minerals for hundreds of years. If a container of water from the lake is allowed to evaporate, ¼ of the container will still be crystalline minerals and trace minerals. Continued on page 11... Sun 7 to 6 M-T 7 to 6

Dr. Herb Says….stay healthy with nature Minerals and Trace Minerals Dr. Car Jelstrup of Bellevue, WA, says, “We have found the Trace Minerals to be very effective in a wide range of stress and pollution related diseases. They are also very effective in stabilizing spinal problems, especially low back conditions. From Scandinavia we have had favorable reports about their effect on osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. This has also been the experience of this clinic. In short, we consider the liquid trace minerals to be by far one of the most effective single food supplements on the market. This is an assessment based on fourteen years of work with the Minerals.” “We cannot ignore Minerals assimilative abilities to prevent against such mineral-related applications as osteoporosis, muscle problems, and glandular disorders such as seen in clinical practice. These minerals should always be used in preventative health programs for all individuals.”
Fasting One or two days of fasting per week will do more good than all the medicine in the world. Many people take bunches of medicine and still have no relief from their symptoms. A person who eats until ill should fast until well. Fasting is a wonderful, inexpensive benefit to your health. Just relax and rest and with no cost nature will do all the repairs necessary if you will only consent. Many people think that they cannot fast, they have to eat. Jesus never sinned, and He fasted. The first test given to Mankind, Adam and Eve, was about eating. The first temptation presented to Jesus was about eating. Moses fasted, Elijah fasted, David fasted, Daniel fasted, Paul fasted, if Adam and Eve had fasted that day, we would not be in this sinful mess we are in. Most regular drug doctors will tell you that fasting is starvation. Thinking that fasting is starvation reveals ignorance of the functions of the human body. Fasting is allowing the body to rest from continuously processing food, and catch up on elimination. Most people put more into the body than comes out. There is an accumulation of toxins in the body. Imagine over many years how many toxins get in the glands, joints, and all throughout the body. People are faithful to take showers, and clean the outside of the body, but seldom ever clean the inside. If you decide to fast, and it is a decision, mind over the body, who is boss your mind or your stomach? It is important that you do not put anything into your mouth until the fast is broken, but water. The first three days the body is adjusting and just getting used to the idea. Day four and onward, the body begins to clean the toxins out. The body will devour from one to one-half pounds of toxins per day. It begins with unwanted materials first such as tumors, pimples, cysts, etc. This is bloodless surgery. Then the body will begin to work on the adipose or fat deposits. This is where the over-weight person becomes happy. If you are one hundred percent faithful and do not even taste or chew on anything but water until your fast is finished, you will have success. In other words, do not cheat. Your body is either processing food, or cleaning itself. If you continuously eat, it is continuously processing food, and never gets a chance to cleanse itself. Fasting can bring about healing and weight loss, whichever is needed. When fasting, your body now has no food to process, so it gets busy with the long-over-due house cleaning. This throws a lot of toxic materials out of the cells into the blood stream. In the beginning you may experience headache, dizziness and weakness. Continued on page 12...

Dr. Herb Says….stay healthy with nature Fasting Continued from page 11... This is not from the lack of food but from the toxic blood. If you do not let this get you down, and continue, in about one week or ten days you will feel better than you have ever felt before. The largest part of cleansing has passed by and you feel great.
Osteoporosis Most every person has bone deterioration; some worse than others. We have all been brain-washed to take calcium, and/or drink milk. Milk is designed for an animal growing bones, but not sustaining bones. Once a person gets the bones growing, we need sunshine, exercise, and hormones to sustain healthy bones. When you start growing; start living. Do something; get exercise. Get outside and get some sunshine. Interact with people. In other words, LIVE! Do not just stay cooped up in a box called a house, and do nothing, and let yourself deteriorate. There are other things besides lack of living that cause you to deteriorate. Watching the world and all that the devil is doing in the world, can dry up your spirit, keep you depressed and will take a toll on your body. Watch God: He has a great future for everyone who wants it. He will lift your spirit and give you hope. Also, there are some physical things you can do that can cause you to deteriorate. Eating animal protein actually wears your digestive system down. Eating sugar destroys nutrients and can add to the deterioration of your body. Alcohol, caffeine, drugs, smoking all take a toll on helping your body to go downhill, and take away your health. Eating too much physical food and not enough spiritual food will cause to deteriorate.

LENOIR, NC (March 2, 2017)…March Gardening Tips from the Caldwell County Center of the NC Cooperative Extension. • Prune spring flowering plants like breath-ofSpring (Winter Honeysuckle) and flowering quince after the flowers fade. • Prune roses late in March. • Prune shrubs like abelia, mahonia and nandina this month if needed. • Pick off faded flowers of pansy and daffodil. Pansies will flower longer if old flowers are removed. • Overgrown shrubs can be severely pruned (not needled evergreens). Spraying • Spray the following landscape shrubs for the following insect pests: euonymus-scale, juniperspruce spider mites and hybrid rhododendronborer. • Start your rose spray program just prior to bud break. • Spray your apple and pear trees with streptomycin for control of fireblight while the trees are in bloom. Lawn Care • Cool-season lawns may be fertilized with 10-1010, but NOT with slow-release fertilizer. Apply recommended soil test rates. Do not fertilize tall fescue after mid March. • Apply crabgrass herbicides to your lawn late this month to help control crabgrass in the turf. • Mow your tall fescue lawn as needed. Mow lawn at height of 3 inches. • Seed fescue and bluegrass if not done in September. Propagation • Continue to divide perennials like daylilies, shasta daisy, gaillardia and coreopsis this month. Specific Chores • Check garden supplies like fertilizer, insecticides and fungicides to see if you have adequate amounts. • Check all garden equipment, lawn mowers, tillers, hedge trimmers, tools, hoses and sprayers to see if they are in find working order before they are needed. • Be certain that old plantings of perennials like peony, hollyhock and phlox are clean of last season’s growth.

The More Perfect Union Special To The Caldwell Journal (By Daniel B. Rundquist)…There is that phrase at the very beginning of the U.S. Constitution that nagged at me when I first set out to study this subject many years ago. It was the preamble, “We the people…In order to form a more perfect union...” The very phrasing assumed that the Constitution we were about to read was inherently flawed. It was only a best attempt to be “more perfect.” It appears that with such wording the Framers seemed to understand that only God’s Law was in fact perfect and anything created by mankind would come up short. So how did the founders know to “form a more perfect union?” More perfect than what, exactly? Were they only referring to the Articles of Confederation which preceded the American Constitution? We would like to believe that these men intended to learn from the mistakes of other statesmen, but how could they ensure that their America would be “more perfect” unless they knew what had not worked prior and why? The nation they sought independence from, England, was certainly “less perfect,” but it was a monarchy, not a “union.” So how did our Framers formulate their ideas about what a “more perfect union” must look like? Perhaps one of the better short descriptions of the foundation of a republic is discovered in a letter written by American General Charles Lee to Robert Morris: “I have ever from the first time I read Plutarch, been an Enthusiastik for Liberty…for liberty is a republican garb, indeed it is natural to a young Person whose chief companions are the Greek and Roman Historians, and Orators, to be dazzl’d with the splendid picture, but alas, I now find, this perfect kind of liberty cou’d be only supported by qualities not possess’d by the Individuals of the Modern World, a publick and patriotick spirit reigning in the breast of every individual superseding all private considerations, it was this spirit alone that carried several of the Grecian States and the Roman Republic triumphantly through so many ages, for as to the formal literal consummation of these Governments. They were defective to absurdity, it was Virtue alone that supported them, all writers agree that Virtue must be the basis of republics, and most of all of federal republics, have the Americans this necessary virtue?” It was virtue, then, that was expected to support Liberty in the United States, in the view of the hopeful General Charles Lee. And where did he get that notion? It was common practice in those days for every student to learn the history and literature of the ancient world from a young age; Charles Lee was no exception and neither was Thomas Jefferson. Many of these school texts in the classic area were still being published in Greek and Latin, forcing pupils to learn these languages at the same time. This was arguably a positive, and something we generally do not require of students today. We know that Jefferson read the Iliad very early on and even collected ancient Greek and Roman coins. He wrote: “Among the values of classical learning I estimate the Luxury of reading the Greek & Roman authors in all the beauties of their originals ... I think myself more indebted to my father for this, than for all the other luxuries his cares and affections have placed within my reach.” The connections of our Framers with the world of the Ancients were deep and broad. The Federalist Papers are littered with so many discussions and writings by the Framers citing the successes, failures, and philosophies of the Greeks, Romans, and other civilizations past. In reading these exchanges, one begins to understand just how serious our Framers took up the matter of their work for the new Constitution, both in form and function. In addition to his voluminous body of writings, Thomas Jefferson gifted America with even more permanent evidence of his connection with the ancient world—his architecture. It was no accident why Jefferson latched on to the architecture of Greece and the Roman Republic. His education was based in the ancient world, which emphasized above all, “civic virtue” and a manifest resistance to the elements of tyranny. While in England the architecture of the day focused on Baroque and the neoclassical styles, Jefferson’s architectural designs were a rebellion away from both of these. One might say an extension of his beliefs and commitment to the American cause. Continued on page 15...

The More Perfect Union Continued from page 14…
This was to be a lasting reminder that America was not to be like England. We were to be a free nation, embracing the “civic virtues” akin to the Roman Republic. Not only did Jefferson design his villa style home, Monticello in the Palladian style but he contributed many more similar works in his lifetime and thus contributed to an explosion of the same Palladian style throughout America in the form of churches, libraries, government buildings, universities, and private homes. These all stand today as a silent testament to the man we seem to want to forget in the 21st century. The final, ratified American Constitution that the Framers settled upon was about as “perfect” as could be expected from any convention of statesmen of the time. It is our responsibility as American Citizens to keep the Constitution functional and intact. Today we must not forget the warning issued by Thomas Jefferson—years before the convention began in 1787—even while the Revolutionary War still raged: "But is the spirit of the people an infallible, a permanent reliance? Is it government? Is this the kind of protection we receive in return for the rights we give up? Besides, the spirit of the times may alter, will alter. Our rulers will become corrupt, our people careless. A single zealot may commence persecutor, and better men be his victims. It can never be too often repeated, that the time for fixing every essential right on a legal basis is while our rulers are honest, and ourselves united. From the conclusion of this war we shall be going down hill. It will not then be necessary to resort every moment to the people for support. They will be forgotten, therefore, and their rights disregarded. They will forget themselves, but in the sole faculty of making money, and will never think of uniting to effect a due respect for their rights. The shackles, therefore, which shall not be knocked off at the conclusion of this war, will remain on us long, will be made heavier and heavier, till our rights shall revive or expire in a convulsion."

Obituaries The Good Word from the Bible ...a weekly Inspirational Message for today’s life-styles...
Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” The humble and broken heart, subdued by genuine repentance, will appreciate something of the love of God and the cost of Calvary; and as a son confesses to a loving father, so will the truly penitent bring all his sins before God. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Sin is unrighteousness, and in God’s Kingdom there is no sin. Sin cannot exist in God’s presence. Since sin entered this world, in His mercy and love God provided a means for our restoration. The covenant that God made with His Son Jesus, before the foundations of the earth was simply an arrangement for bringing men again into harmony with the divine will, placing them where they could obey God’s law. There must be sincere repentance and reformation. There must be decided changes in the life; everything offensive to God must be put away. That will be the result of genuine sorrow for sin. God wants us to put away the evil of our doings from before His eyes. God wants us to cease to do evil, and learn to do well. There is no excuse for sin, and any attempt to justify self, is not true heart felt repentance.

Hudson Elementary PE Teacher in the national spotlight for heart health LENOIR, NC (February 28, 2017)…Moira Brookshire, a physical education teacher at Hudson Elementary School has been selected to receive one of only 10 national grants for Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart awarded by SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators. She will be recognized on March 16 during the association’s Celebration of Professional Excellence Ceremony at its National Convention & Expo in Boston this month. (Moira Brookshire in photo below.) Brookshire will hold her 19th school-wide heart health event March 1 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Over the years, students have raised more than $36,000. “We were ranked #1 in the county last year and #8 in the Western North Carolina Region,” said Brookshire. “The kids here at Hudson Elementary do an amazing job! We raised $4,800 last year for the American Heart Association, and our goal this year is $5,500.”
Brookshire used to teach high school physical education but made the choice to move to Hudson Elementary School. “Working with high school age students for fourteen years, I witnessed unhealthy lifestyle choices, serious medical issues, and many students who led inactive lives. I made the move to Hudson Elementary School, so I could affect healthy changes at a much earlier age.” At Hudson Elementary School, the month of March is known for more than Dr. Seuss’s Read Across America. “Hoops for Heart Madness Month” kicks off, when students wear their favorite basketball team apparel and during the month recognize family members or loved ones who have heart related health problems by writing the name on a heart and placing them on the gym wall. To reinforce the heart-healthy messages, some of the school staff dress up as members of the JRFH/HFH ‘Zoo Crew.’ Each animal friend has its own heart-healthy message, many of which are already taught in health and PE. Brookshire said that participating in the Hoops for Heart program is a fun way to begin to encourage students to form healthy habits while giving back. With a degree in physical education from Pfeiffer University, a master’s degree in administration from Gardner-Webb University and national board certification, she said that she fully understands and sometimes witnesses the impact of inactivity and poor nutrition with students. “There is a need to increase awareness of staying active and healthy,” said Brookshire. As part of the grant package, she will receive a US Games gift certificate to enhance her PE program, a free one-year membership to SHAPE America as well as expenses paid for travel and registration to the national convention.
