Winter weather impacts school schedules CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (January 11, 2017)…The winter storm that socked the county with frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall left schools closed for two days and delayed for two hours on Wednesday. With scattered showers and temperatures above freezing in the extended forecast, schools should resume to a regular schedule, as high schools prepare for end-of-semester exams.

Superintendent Dr. Steve Stone said that the winter weather outlook for western North Carolina predicts a penetrating cold and very wet winter.

“We will get through the worst of the winter season before we determine how to make up time for all the days missed,” said Stone.

At the January Board of Education meeting, the Superintendent announced the make-up day for January 9, 2017, missed due to inclement weather.

The Optional Planning Day scheduled January 23 will be a regular school day. Originally on the school calendar, it was a day off for students and a planning day for teachers to make class adjustments and finalize reporting for the end of the semester.

Since students missed January 9 and 10, the exam schedule for high school students has been revised.

Exams will begin after the Martin Luther King Holiday and conclude on Monday, January 23. High school students will have review sessions until the exam schedule begins on January 17. The end of the 2nd 9-week grading period and the semester break have been extended for Hibriten High, South Caldwell and West Caldwell High School to Monday, January 23. For elementary and middle schools, the grading period will end as scheduled on January 20.

The Early College High School and the Career Center Middle College operate on a different calendar approved by the State Board of Education to allow them more alignment with the community college calendar. The snow make-up day for both schools is May 22.

The Board of Education must adhere to the regulations of state law governing school calendars when making any adjustments to the calendar. Public school calendars must have a minimum of 185 days or 1,025 hours of instruction for students. The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will continue to be observed on Monday, January 16.

Baked Popcorn Chicken Ingredients 2 lb. skinless chicken breast, cut into 2-inch nuggets kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper extra-virgin olive oil 2 c. crushed corn flakes Olive oil spray 1/2 c. mayo 1/2 c. sour cream 1 tbsp. sriracha 1 tsp. cayenne 2 tbsp. chopped scallions

Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper.

Season chicken with salt and pepper. Drizzle chicken with olive oil and dredge in crushed corn flakes. Place chicken on sheet pan in a single layer and spray with oil. Bake until golden brown, about 10 to 12 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl combine mayo, sour cream, Sriracha and cayenne.

Serve popcorn chicken with sriracha dip and garnish with scallions.

Community Helping Agencies Receive Foundation Grants LENOIR, NC (January 10, 2017)…Caldwell County citizens will benefit from grants totaling $14,000 awarded in December from Blue Ridge Electric Members Foundation to local helping agencies for the most recent grant cycle.

The grants are examples of why the cooperative – recently rebranded as “Blue Ridge Energy” – established the Members Foundation in 2006 to support the work of community organizations providing services that improve the quality of life for the cooperative’s members. Projects in the areas of health, wellness, education, youth, and economic and community development are the Foundation’s priorities for support.

A total of $80,000 was awarded to 16 different organizations across the Blue Ridge service area during the December grant cycle. Local Caldwell County organizations receiving grant awards include: • Helping Hands Clinic – $5,000 to support two separate programs: an urgent care clinic and a high -risk diabetic clinic • Koinonia, Inc. – $3,000 to help purchase and install an HVAC unit to cool the common areas that serve as areas of socialization for residents • Oak Hill Development, Inc. – $1,500 to assist with upgrades and beautification efforts in the 34year-old rural Oak Hill Park • South Caldwell Christian Ministries – $2,000 for food purchases for six new mobile food pantries • Caldwell Senior Center – $2,500 to help fund the Medication Assistance Program – an interface between doctors, drug companies and low income seniors.

An additional multi-county grant of $3,734 was awarded to “State Employees Credit Union Family House” to assist families and caregivers traveling to Forsyth County for healthcare.

During 2016, the Foundation also provided crisis funding assistance to more than 1,000 Blue Ridge Energy members in need of emergency help to pay their electric bills. While crisis assistance is funded by the Foundation, local helping agencies evaluate needs and determine who qualifies for assistance.

Jeanette was retired from Joan Fabrics. She was active member of Oakland Heights Baptist Church under Rev. Jewel Cook.

Dr. Herb Says‌.Stay healthy with nature “Go Veganâ€?

Vegan means nothing animal; no meat, milk, cheese, yogurt, egg, ice cream, butter. Some people say: if you do not eat animal, where are you going to get your protein, calcium, and B-12? A cow stands all day and eats nothing but grass. So, where does the cow get protein, calcium, and B-12? It is an established fact that a plant based diet is the healthiest. There is much scientific research to support this.

More importantly a plant based diet was designed by God for mankind. Vegan is the best diet. Vegan was the Garden of Eden diet. Vegan is the best way to eat for preventing cancer and other diseases.

The fact is malnutrition and starvation will kill about 14 million people this year. If Americans reduced their intake of meat by just 10%, the land, water and energy freed up from growing livestock feed, would feed 100 million people. Turning grain into flesh is extremely wasteful. Twenty vegetarians can be fed on the amount of land needed to feed one person on a meat-based diet. Another fact: It takes about 300 gallons of water per day to produce food for someone who is totally vegetarian, but it takes more than 4,000 gallons of water per day to create the food needed to feed a meat-eater. Meat is a dead animal carcass; we are humans, not crows. The kidneys of the meat eater must work three times harder than the kidney of the person who eats vegan. It takes meat four times longer to pass through the digestive tract, than for fruits, grains, beans and vegetables. The liability to take disease is increased tenfold by meat eating. Heart attack is the most common cause of death in the U.S., killing one person every 45 seconds. The male meat-eaters risk of death from heart attack is 50%. The risk to men who eat no meat is 15%.

The Human Liver The liver consists of four discrete but interrelated structures which are physiologic-anatomic units: the Circulatory System, Biliary Passages, Reticuloendothelial cells and the parenchymal cells. The strength of the liver is that is has the power to regenerate its own tissue. For the most part it serves silently but you will soon realize: The liver is your life.

The liver pretty much fills up the right upper quadrant of your abdomen and is protected by the rib cage. It weighs about 3 pounds and has the capability of performing upward of 500 miraculous functions of which the simplest of them, should we want to duplicate it, would take a chemical plant sprawled over many acres. It synthesizes over 1,000 enzymes, detoxifies the body of drugs and other poisons, prevents a sudden surge in the blood pressure from damaging the heart, turns animal amino acids into usable protein, retrieves nutrients, stores glycogen, breaks down and manufactures hormones and these are some of the simpler performances. The liver also has tremendous recuperative powers. It is one of the few organs that can renew its tissue.

Unlike the other glands that grab all the headlines, like the heart or thyroid, the liver works silently as a true virtuoso. It will provide blood sugar for your muscles during your work-out. To keep you from bleeding to death when you cut yourself, the liver supplies clotting factors. It will also eliminate excess proteins by turning them into urea and eliminating it through the kidneys. The detoxifying properties of the liver are enormous. Pour some poisons into your system like nicotine, coffee or various drugs it will only take the liver six to ten seconds to extract their sting from the bloodstream after entry into the liver. Some materials produced by the body can be potentially harmful, even deadly. For example, muscles are burning glucose and producing the end product lactic acid, which becomes a toxic substance to the system. But the liver, not only being a guardian, but also a good and thrifty housekeeper will convert this substance into glycogen and store it for future use.

Here is another thing to consider: Every second ten million red blood cells die and must be disposed of. The liver not only breaks them down or catabolizes them but conserves their components to be used over and over again in forming new red cells. It uses some of the debris to make a daily quart of bile – the greenish yellow digestive juice. Occasionally green or red pigmented bile gets into the blood in too great a quantity; if this causes your skin and the cornea of your eyes to get a yellow tinge it does not necessarily mean that you have hepatitis particularly if you do not have clay colored stool and/or nausea.

Certain diseases – malaria, some types of anemia – destroy red blood cells rapidly and the pigments from the destroyed cells accumulate faster than the liver can dispose of them. Obstructions in the gallbladder or ducts can also back up pigments and spill them over into the bloodstream to produce jaundiced shade.

The liver is an organ that digests fat. This is facilitated when bile is secreted into the common bile duct, joining there with pancreatic enzymes that find their way to a little pouch called the duodenum located between the stomach and the small intestine. This is released at mealtime to break down big fat globules into small ones thus forming Micelles in which bile and the pancreatic enzyme lipase play an important role. Bile at this point also serves to alkalize the small intestine.

Remember the liver has tremendous regenerative and compensatory powers. With a loss of 85% of its functional tissue, it will still perform normally without any disturbing symptoms. It will continue to produce clotting factors, antibodies, convert animal amino acids to human protein, emulsify fat, regulate sugar, detoxify drugs, alcohol and other poisons, work as a safety valve for the heart when there is a surge in the blood pressure, and a host of other activities without giving you a hint of its failing unless you can read subtle indications.

Cirrhosis and serious congestion or damage is generally indicated by the sensation of pain, pressure or fullness in the hepatic area. Hardness of the liver and even softness with tenderness as well as swelling definitely point toward liver problems. Note: The symptom chart contains signs that could be easily overlooked because there may not be a conscious awareness of their possible connection with hepatic function.

Signs and Symptoms: Tenderness under right rib cage, tender arches upon arising, diarrhea, cramping, diabetes, painful joints, nervous, irritated, flatulence, bloating, nausea, headaches, anemia, jaundice, intolerance of fatty foods, blood sugar fluctuation, fatigue (chronic), lack of appetite, dull pain upper right abdomen, mood changes, varicose veins, uncomfortable on right side, high cholesterol, hemorrhoids, constipation, hypoglycemia, difficulty awakening, insomnia, unable to function after meals, sudden cravings, night blindness.

Dr. Herb Says….stay healthy with nature Enzymes Enzymes participate in all processes of life: birth and death, growth and maintenance. They are the catalytic elements that accelerate chemical reactions by 108 to 1011 times. Some laundry detergents contain enzymes to accelerate the dissolution of proteins and removal of dirt.

No matter how much good food we eat, the food can’t become part of our bodies without enzymes. Protein, for example, is too large to pass through blood vessels alone; enzymes must first break it down into molecularly miniscule amino acid. Enzymes also produce necessary substances, dissolve unnecessary substances, and help eliminate harmful ones from the body.

As we get older, the body’s natural production of enzymes slows down. That’s why elders often have more difficulty digesting food than do younger people. When digestive problems occur, many people generally take peptic medicines that contain enzymes, such as amylase that dissolves starches, proteolytic enzymes, and lipolytic enzymes.

As stress and environmental pollution increase, so does our need for enzymes. Since cooking and processing food destroys enzymes, you can see why modern people with busy lives often lack sufficient enzymes in their diet, and often suffer from poor digestion, stressed bodies, accelerated aging, and diseases.

Enzymes also need vitamins and minerals to function properly, and these are also damaged and destroyed by cooking. Raw food supplies the enzymes, vitamins, and minerals you need.

We have chronic colon problems in America and there is nothing in the medical arts to help the problem. Most everyone who has ever had colon problems knows that drugs only compound the problem.

SCHS Football Standout Tyler Goins to play in Blue/Grey All-American Bowl SAWMILLS, NC (January 5, 2017)…South Caldwell Senior Spartan Football Player Tyler Goins, was picked 5th out of 7,000+ high school athletes to play in the position of Running Back, in the Blue/ Grey All-American Bowl at the Jacksonville Jaguars EverBank Stadium on January 14th. The game will be televised on ESPN3 beginning at 1:00PM. Tyler will play in the #9 jersey on the Grey Team.

Tyler is planning on attending college and would like to attend either Appalachian State, UNC or Marshall. So, hopefully his hard work will result in a scholarship to the school of his choice.

About the Blue/Grey All-American Bowl Blue-Grey Football was established in 1989. The founders were Gus Bell and his son Erik Bell. Together, they established the brand to help prep prospects from all over the country receive national exposure and increase their chances to secure scholarships to a college, whether that be at the NCAA Division I level, or II, III, NAIA or Junior College.

Fast forward, and today, Blue-Grey Football proudly hosts close to 20 Regional Combines and four Super Combines at venues all over the country, with most taking place inside of stadiums and practice facilities that are home to teams from the NFL. Do well when given the opportunity during these workouts in front of our team of experienced scouts, as well the coaching staff comprised of NFL veterans, and recruits are selected to participate three prestigious Blue-Grey All-American Bowls.

On a yearly basis, the games are East vs. West at Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium, North vs. South at Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Raymond James Stadium and Blue vs. Grey at Jacksonville Jaguars’ EverBank Field.

“Movies with Mike�

The Value of a Broken Heart by Mike Holsclaw (January 5th, 2017) Yeller snarled.

Yeller was the best friend Travis had ever had; actually, he had been a loyal and faithful companion to the entire Coates family, saving one or another of their lives, more than once, from the various perils of frontier life in Texas circa 1870. Most recently, he had leapt in front of a rabid wolf that had tried to attack Katie, Travis' mom, and Lisbeth Searcy. Yeller had fought the wolf long enough for Travis to shoot it but not before the wolf had bit him; Katie warned Travis that Yeller was probably infected but he pleaded with her to pen him up to see whether he was really sick or not.

They put him in the corn crib and waited... and now, Yeller looked at Travis with foam on his lips and snarled. All the love and affection he had felt for his humans had been driven from his eyes by pain and misery; his stare, now black and indifferent, showed only a trace left of the dog they had known. Katie said, "It has to be done, son; he's suffering."

There's a tight close-up on Travis' face and, through the tears that are beginning to well up in his eyes, we share with him the sadness and wounded sense of betrayal that comes from living in a world that can be so unfair. Shouldering more weight than a boy his age should have to carry, he puts the barrel of his rifle between the slats of the crib, takes aim, and pulls the trigger...

Later, Jim, Travis' father, tries to console him about the loss of his dog. In some of the best fatherly advice ever captured on film, he says, "Now and then, for no good reason, life will haul off and knock a man flat." About what happened, he concedes, "that was rough; that was as rough a thing as I ever heard tell of happening to a boy and I'm mighty proud to learn how my boy stood up to it." Travis asks him how to forget about it and Jim says that maybe he shouldn't try to forget, that maybe something that important needs to be remembered. But, he says, with a common sense that's equal parts stoicism and pragmatism, " It's hard to believe, but if you go looking for something good to take the place of the bad, generally you can do it!" I've always cherished the wisdom of this ending to "Old Yeller"; I mean, after all, isn't that the best that any of us can do?

I've been feeling ambivalent about Uncle Walt for some time now; true, he revolutionized animation in America and made it a respected art form, but he also turned the process into a factory and, when his artists tried to unionize that factory for better hours and pay, he accused them of being communists. He created the concept of the modern amusement park and drew themes from his films to bring those parks to life, but he also turned American history into a simplistic myth and sugar coated, or worse, ignored, the messy facts of how indigenous people and people of color fared throughout that history.

He produced "Fantasia" but, despite the best efforts of people who tried to dissuade him, he was also responsible for "Song of the South". It's a curious thing, but he seems to have been a visionary and a reactionary both at the same time. One unalloyed good thing I can say about him, though, is that he knew how to break children's hearts.

There's no irony or sarcasm intended here; without question, for a certain cohort of baby boomers, myself included, there are three traumatic moments in American cinema that stand out in vivid distinction as rites of passage: the death of Bambi's mother, Dumbo being taken away from his mother, and the death of Old Yeller. These scenes are indelibly printed in our memories and, for most people I know, they served as valuable life lessons. In one of those three moments, we faced the stark realization that, despite any pretense on the part of our parents, the world can be, as they say in "Raising Arizona", "a hard place for little things."

Don't misunderstand; I'm not making an argument for sadism. It's just that I don't hold much brief with the current fashion of cushioning the young from every possible source of distress; I grow impatient with talk of "trigger warnings" and "safe zones". Standard disclaimer: obviously I'm not speaking of people who have actually been subjected to assault or abuse; they should be treated with the highest regard for their well-being. I refer, instead, to those persons, on the left and the right, who flinch from hearing an unpleasant word or recoil at the prospect of thinking about ideas they don't like. It's sometimes a wry source of amusement to watch college students running away from "trauma" the way an east European villager runs away from vampires and, apparently, with the same degree of superstitious dread. Their attitude toward "trauma" betrays their basic ignorance of the history of psychotherapy; from Freud onward, it’s been understood that the way to rob a real trauma of its power is to face it again, to re-expose yourself to it enough times to become desensitized. There's a variation of that same principle at work in the "tough love" displayed by Uncle Walt; it's not that he and his generation wanted to be cruel to their children but, after having lived through the Great Depression and World War II, they knew the practical value of hard times. They also knew that, in America's postwar affluence, there was little to no chance their progeny would ever learn any of those hardscrabble lessons first hand. The next best thing was to create stories that gave them a glimpse of the darker aspects of life.

Even then, he was careful to couch those harsher realities in a cushion of positive feeling; in all three of the films I've mentioned, the central traumatic event is offset by a more pleasant outcome in the end; Bambi becomes part of the woodland community, grows up, and becomes a parent himself. Dumbo learns he has a special talent, becomes enormously successful, and is reunited with his mother. Finally, Travis adopts Yeller's son and, as the movie ends, we have every indication that he will take as much satisfaction in his companionship as he did in his father's. Because these three films didn't euphemize the world's hurts but, rather, presented them more or less realistically, some contemporary critics have accused Disney of metaphorical "child abuse"; I couldn't disagree more strongly - I think he did the baby boom generation a service by allowing us to get a head start on our maturation process; I certainly have a fond memory attached to one of the three and I remember how it widened my horizons, at least a little...

It was a rainy Saturday; not necessarily the best day for a matinee but he had promised. I was six or seven and Disney had done another one of their perennial re-releases of one of their animated classics; "Bambi" was back in theaters again and, though it was usually my mother who took me to daytime showings, for some reason she couldn't go and Dad volunteered. My father inclines towards westerns and action films so I wouldn't say "Bambi" would be his first choice in cinematic entertainment. Still, he was a good sport about it or, at least, he was until the Moment; he knew it was coming but he didn't know how I would react. I still recall what it was like: as soon as I realized that Bambi's mother was irrevocably dead with no hope of a sudden, last minute save, I was as emotionally devastated as I had ever been. A fifty megaton bomb had gone off in my heart and I didn't have a clue how to begin to clean up the debris. I cried and I cried freely; Dad tried his best to console me but he was almost as clueless as I was as to how to "fix" it. Eventually, of course, I settled down and became re-immersed in the action on the screen; by the time the movie was over, I had recovered to a large extent, bolstered as I was by the mostly happy events that transpired in the rest of Bambi's life.

Still, as we got in our car and started our journey for home, my mood was more than a little melancholy; the sky was gray, fat drops of rain continued to fall, and the temperature had started to fall.

My feelings were still a little raw and, though I was consciously avoiding admitting it, on the ragged edges of my awareness there was a dawning realization: if Bambi's mother had died then, what did that mean for Mom, Dad, and yes, even me... then, as vividly as the death scene in the movie, I remember these things happening - Herb Alpert's "A Taste of Honey" came on the radio, the rain began to come down harder, and Dad turned up the heater to defrost the windows. The bittersweet tones of the song and the heat that suffused the car blended together perfectly to complement a moment of clarity; yes, living things die, yes someday I and my parents will die, but, right now, I'm warm and safe with my father, who I love, and we're headed for home. As I would hear Travis' dad remind me years in the future, this was a Good Thing and it was just as important as the bad things I would have to face in the course of my life; maybe even more so.

Last week, when I went to bring my father home from the hospital, I thought about that moment in the car all those years ago; when I walked into his hospital room, he seemed mellow and introspective but, in just a few minutes, he and I were sharing inside jokes, ribbing one another about our political differences, and laughing about some of the ridiculous things that happened during his hospital stay. That jovial, relaxed mood lasted all the way to his house and I thought: this is another Good Thing and, no matter what the future may hold, no one can take this away from us. Uncle Walt broke my heart all those years ago but he also made it possible for me to mend it, and he's also helped me appreciate all the little things that truly matter. For that, I thank you, Mr. Disney!

The Path Forward…By Daniel B. Rundquist Special to the Caldwell Journal...January 2017 brings us the inauguration of a new president. Americans have witnessed a busy election season to say the least. Impassioned candidates full of rhetoric, a media buzzing with whatever story they determined might generate the most attention, hopeful voters who cast their ballots, and now protestors upset with the outcome. If it seems to you that this election cycle was more important than the last, there are grounds to support your feelings.

The American condition is in a perilous state at present. The national debt soon topping $20,000,000,000,000; more than 94,000,000 Americans out of work (62% of the labor force!); no real rises in wages in years for those who are still working, with more than 893,000 bankruptcies and nearly 521,000 home foreclosures in 2016 alone. 4.9 million manufacturing jobs have been lost to the nation over the past 16 years. Add that to the nearly 43 million Americans now living in poverty and it’s not at all surprising that the voters decided to make a change in leadership and policy for the nation. Americans of all political backgrounds are desperately looking for the path forward.

I could go on to fill this entire space with additional figures that tell the same alarming story. The tragedy is that these numbers represent the lives of real American families both across the nation and at home. It is a desperate state of affairs for any incoming president to have to deal with, but is certainly not the first time Americans have had to face such hard realities.

Encouragement for success in dealing with these issues may be discovered in our own past. In December of 1778 things were not going well for America. The Revolutionary War was in full swing without an end in sight, there was rampant currency inflation and weakness in congress to act…well perhaps it is better to let General George Washington sum up the circumstances as he did in his letter to Benjamin Harrison: “A picture of the times—& of Men—from what I have Seen, heard, & in part know I should in one word say that idleness, dissipation & extravagance seems to have laid fast hold of most of them. That speculation—peculation—& an insatiable thirst for riches seems to have got the better of every other consideration and almost of every order of Men. That party disputes & personal quarrels are the great business of the day whilst the momentous concerns of an empire—a great & accumulated debt—ruined finances— depreciated money—& want of credit (which in their consequences is the want of everything) are but secondary considerations & postponed from day to day—from week to week as if our affairs wore the most promising aspect—after drawing this picture, which from my Soul I believe to be a true one I need not repeat to you that I am alarmed and wish to see my Country men roused…Your Money is now sinking 5 pr Ct a day in this City and I shall not be surprized if in the course of a few months a total stop is put to the currency of it. …a great part of the Officers of yr army from absolute necessity are quitting the Service and the more virtuous few rather than do this are sinking by sure degrees into beggery & want. I again repeat to you that this is not an exaggerated acct—that it is an alarming one I do not deny, & confess to you that I feel more real distress on acct of the pres[en]t appearances of things than I have done at any one time since the commencement of the dispute…”

Washington here lays out the desperate condition of the fledgling American nation. Just as it is today, Americans were busy chasing the dollar and the divisions caused by “party disputes & personal quarrels” seem to be of more concern to the public than any of the real issues at hand. General Washington is both troubled and alarmed by the nation’s debt, currency, and lack of credit of which too few others apparently seem concerned with. His competent officers faced with the reality that the value of their pay is depreciating at such a rate that they would work themselves into poverty if they remained in service to the Continental Army.

In many respects the times in which Washington and his men lived appear to mirror our own. Not surprisingly, Washington’s first recommendation for a course of action was to start with the appointing of competent and dedicated leadership. Appointments to these representative posts were necessary as the present election process as we know it today did not yet exist.

in such times of pressing danger—they must not content themselves in the enjoyment of places of honor or profit in their own Country while the common interests of America are mouldering & sinking into irretrievable (if a remedy is not soon applied) ruin, in which theirs also must ultimately be involved.”

It also seems plain to me that Washington’s description of who should be appointed (“ablest & best”) differs from the character of many of our politicians today, and I need not list names of the offenders for the sake of brevity here. Washington further attempts to press the sense of urgency of the service of these representatives by asking that they must not rest or spend time using their positions to enrich themselves personally. Americans now know that for a long time our modern political class has been guilty of these offenses—another driver for our electorate at the ballot box in hopes of correcting at least some of this behavior and refocusing Congress and the Executive Branch on the important matters of State.

Bear in mind that because mankind itself is flawed, the American Framers wisely explained for all posterity that they did only the best that could be done in forming a free republic. The U.S. Constitution they ratified begins, “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union…”

Even they understood at our Founding that the system of American government they prescribed could not be perfect, and the American people would have to settle for only “more perfect” than other nations both contemporary and ancient.

It is a fair conclusion that the past courses and policies of two branches of American government were soundly repudiated by the electorate in November, 2016. Whatever our individual political beliefs may be, Americans should take hope in the knowledge that the nation has faced desperate circumstances before and the American people were able to unify to overcome them. It is, however, of great importance to keep in mind that the wheels of government turn slowly by the proper design of the U.S. Constitution. Change—restoration in the present case—will simply take time, and we ought not to rush to frustration if positive progress is not immediately apparent. Patience and cool heads must remain the order of the day among the American citizenry.

U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson Introduces National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Bill WASHINGTON, DC (January 3, 2017)…On Tuesday, January 3, 2017, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after introducing the bipartisan Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 (H.R. 38) with 58 original cosponsors: “Our Second Amendment right doesn’t disappear when we cross state lines, and this legislation guarantees that.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 is a common sense solution to a problem too many Americans face. It will provide law-abiding citizens the right to conceal carry and travel freely between states without worrying about conflicting state codes or onerous civil suits. As a member of President-elect Trump’s Second Amendment Coalition, I look forward to working with my colleagues and the administration to get this legislation across the finish line.”

Rep. Hudson’s bill, which is supported by major pro-Second Amendment groups, would allow people with a state-issued concealed carry license or permit to conceal a handgun in any other state that allows concealed carry, as long as the permit holder follows the laws of that state. It also allows residents of Constitutional carry states the ability to carry in other states that recognize their own resident’s right to concealed carry.

Last month, Rep. Hudson joined “Varney & Co.” on Fox Business to discuss his plan to introduce this legislation and his work to protect our Second Amendment rights.

Rep. Hudson, who is nationally recognized as a strong advocate for our Second Amendment rights, introduced similar legislation in the 114th Congress. This bill, H.R. 986, had 216 cosponsors. In addition, his amendment to stop President Obama’s “green-tip” bullet ban passed the House and helped put intense pressure on the administration to abandon its unilateral attempt to restrict our right to keep and bear arms.
