25 November 2011

Dear Parent/Guardian Industrial Action – 30th November 2011 As I am sure you will be aware, members of the GMB, National Union of Teachers (NUT), NAS/UWT, Unison, Unite and Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) have recently voted in favour of industrial action and notified the Governing Body and the City Council of this. This action is in connection with the proposed changes to Public Sector Pensions. The local union representatives of the named unions have informed me that there are 124 of their members at Calderstones School. The Leadership Group have undertaken a risk assessment of the possible impact of this industrial action on our ability to keep the school open and educate our pupils in safety on Wednesday 30th November 2011. We have discussed this with the governing body of the school and decided that regrettably it will not be possible to provide classes or supervision for any pupils, and pupils should not attend school on Wednesday 30th November 2011. I realise that this may cause you problems but I cannot give you assurances regarding the health and safety of your children on Wednesday 30th November given the very real probability that many teachers and support staff will be on strike and unable to teach classes or supervise pupils at breaks and lunch times. Once again I am sorry to have to take this action and ask you for your understanding and forbearance in this matter. Yours sincerely

Brian Davies Headteacher
