“real music for real people”

THE NEW VINTAGE What brought on your initial affinity for music?

What do you think about the music for in the future?

Well, when I started walking I would always put my hands on my grandma’s piano and have some fun, then in my early school days I discovered rock’ n’ roll bands like the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Guns n’ Roses. My father played guitar in an amateur classical style, he listened to tango and milonga, and that’s what he played influenced by Alfredo Zitarrosa. Then in my break time on college days I would always picked up a guitar and have some fun, at this time I was about 12-yearsold. With a friend who was learning guitar and showed me the “ Smells Like Teen Spirit’s” riff, knocking me out. since that moment I wanted to play electric guitar, then I started listening to Hendrix and Zeppelin and developed a style based on those influences that later brought me to the blues, I am basically a hard blues man.

I really don’t know what to think, music is in a very low point in history, I am talking about songwriting, there are not good songs anymore. Being a musician nowadays is kinda lobby stuff, a fashion. You will buy a Mac and you make music, but then you have to play it live, and that is not so easy if you are not a talented musician. So people in the past, in the 50’s they got 2 mics, and they had to play well or be fired, this type of primitive technique at a recording studio printed in vinyl what really music is all about – a song and interpretation, you can feel it very soulful, the artist is in fact pulling the best of him, and a listener is touched with that, they don’t have auto tunes and pro tools at that time, but they got the best songs and for me, that’s all about it.

How are you inspired now? What are your influences?

Are you guys into the big rock scene?

I am inspired by the life itself, by the same things that I always liked, the music and instruments, girls, love, sunny days under the shadow of a big tree, strange nights in my downtown neighborhood (the barrio), weed, clothes, the beat generation of writers, old school rock’ n’ roll, the blues, the funk, the soul, the boogie, the feeling of living every day with liberty and joy.

Spiritually in the vanguard, the people who are following our music know it. Not commercially exploited, or in any music channel yet, but I feel this is really going to change in a short time, really feel it that way. We began playing as a band in March 2008 and we have played a lot of gigs nearly every weekend since that date, we have made our public in small pubs, like in the old times, people feeling rock’ n’ roll and drinking. We have released our first album RIO BRAVO on the internet, and it’s been going pretty well like 2000 downloads. It has been available for free downloads for 3 months now, so for our country that’s great, but we have an international projection.

You guys have been on the road for quite a while now, what is it that you like best about touring? Well, we’ve been touring in our country Uruguay and in Argentina only. But we are planning a South American tour, Brazil included. I think the best of touring is to reach different kind of people, and see the reaction of your music on them, besides knowing different places and the good things of every city. What kinds of places do you prefer to play? I prefer playing in auditoriums or theaters for a public near 500 people, but it´s all about the energy you can get out of your audience, our shows are really powerful in the spiritual side of music, we don’t do much lights and explosions or crazy dancing, we just play loud and blow your mind. How do you think music blogs have affected music today? They are very important because people who want to listen to music that it is not available to buy in the market can get what they need. Blogs have influenced a whole generation and it is only the beginning.

What are your goals for the future? Our goals is to reach the most amount of people we can, I think that we’re going to make some US and Europe tours maybe next year. We are pre-producing our second record, that is going to have the same style of music, it is what we call NEW VINTAGE, a big mix of spiritually processed great music that is played with excellence by our band, we considered ourselves full time musicians, amateurism got nothing to do with us, we take our music very seriously. In the near future I am travelling to New York to play some acoustic shows without the band and make some contacts for a US tour we are planning in 2011. How your music has been described by the press. How would you describe it? real music for real people

But now, because you guys and The Black Keys and White Stripes and all these other great rock bands have emerged at a similar time, it seems obvious to say that rock is back in full swing? Yes, of course there are some rock acts nowadays that are playing and sounding very good, but I think rock music back in the days it was a revolution, with a mental and spiritual ideology, and that has been lost. Despite that, I am working my ass off to bring good music to the people who needs it and bring back this beautiful sound and feeling of rock n’ roll. Your look and your sound both definitely have a vintage vibe going on. Do you attribute that more to what happened growing up or more from outside influences like music, art and film? Well I can’t change my vintage vibe, I live with it every day, I grew up like that, it’s my style inspiration, both music and clothes. But this thing came out from music and nothing else. Our music and sound style I call it New Vintage. That’s because I love the vintage sound of the guitars, bass and drums, and all that mix that is so sweet but it´s renewed by technological features of these times, and that is for me the perfect combination, but it’s not so easy. We worked a lot with the band and our engineer, Antonio Acosta who was the man that recorded and mixed RIO BRAVO, he loves the vintage vibe too, he´s a very skillful engineer in my country Uruguay... Tell me more about your days at the fashionable look... Well I’m into vintage clothes since I’m a teen, I’ve been influenced by a lot of rock heroes, and I’m in that line, mixing the swinging London days, with glam, punk, mod, rocker, a lot of styles mixed in a personal style, I buy clothes every day I can. So which is it for ............................. - sex, drugs or rock’ n’ roll? Only for the rock’ n’ roll, but I’m lucky to get some sex and drugs.
