RETHINKING THE WAY WE BUY AND SELL. When buying or selling a home, vehicle, electronics, antiques, services, or just about anything under the Louisiana sun, Cajun Classifieds has you completely covered from cover to cover. Each month we take the traditional approach to buying and selling through classified advertising and turn it on its head. Our publication’s attractive print quality and convenient size provides plenty of space to display “for sale” items in simple text, or paired with eyecatching, full-color images. By organizing our classified ads into clear, easy to navigate color-coded categories, we’re helping buyers find what they’re looking for with ease, and sellers sell their goods much faster. The added value of our relevant articles and expert tips, combined with the power of our website’s classified advertising engine, means more eyes on your ads in every single issue. You can go to www.CajunClassifieds.com to place your listing today or join us on Facebook to see how we are “Rethinking the Way We Buy and Sell.”

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE MASKS Southwest Louisiana’s Mardi Gras Heritage
ardi Gras, two words that speak a thousand. A day’s worth of celebration that demands an entire month of festivities. Through the evolution of this annual celebration, Mardi Gras, or Shrove Tuesday, has taken the historical parade route that began in medieval Europe – passing through Italy in the 17th century to the French House of the Bourbons – and from there, the traditional revelry of “Boeuf Gras,” or fatted calf, followed France here to the Gulf Coast states. In Southwest Louisiana, Mardi Gras’ French influence is as rich as our gumbo, sprinkled with the zest of Africa by way of the Caribbean Islands, spiced just right with Latin American traditions passed down from of our heavy Spanish heritage, and made even more potent from the additions of new traditions formed every generation, every year. To me, it is that intertwining thread of history and heritage that makes Mardi Gras as symbolically strong as any other celebration. It is a celebration of human life…a celebration for all the different parts that make us unique! And that is what makes the next twist so important in educating ourselves to Mardi Gras’ symbolic acts of peace and goodwill. Mardi Gras, mixed with all of our influences, is defined by a single act of anonymity – putting on a mask. And now, putting on your disguise, you become a symbol of the celebration, and no matter your race, gender, wealth – you become one with the parade and the community. And for that moment, however brief, a kind act – laced in tradition and completely anonymous – is shared between two people…a token of prosperity in the form of beads or a doubloon is offered. That moment and the magic it presents is the true reason why Mardi Gras has become so defining of the good people here in Southwest Louisiana. No longer judged for their exterior, but for their generousity, Mardi Gras participants enjoy the act of Charity. And despite the loss of conscious connection to Ash Wednesday and the 40 days of the Lenten season – a good and decent act is still committed and the true point of both Christianity and Mardi Gras delivered. So let your shouts be loud this Mardi Gras, let your throws be strong, and let your acts of goodwill inspire others to follow you in a long parade line. Because life is uncertain, and beautiful. We must celebrate each other for what our pasts bring to the present and to the future. Because once the parade ends…the masks come off. This year, try to pretend they didn’t. –Christian White

The average Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras costume weighs more than 50 pounds. The construction of most Southwest Louisiana costumes begins as early as the day after Mardi Gras. Most of the caps that you see on the costumewearers began as a simple piece of aluminum foil. That Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras is the second largest in the state behind New Orleans. That there are more than 50 krewes involved with Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras. That the Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu contains the largest collection of Mardi Gras costumes in the world. Cajun Mardi Gras costumes are often made of shirts and pants that feature large, colorful fringes.
The tall, pointy hats typically seen at a Cajun Mardi Gras celebration are called “capuchons” and are meant to parody the headdresses of France’s noble ladies. One of the earliest recorded Mardi Gras celebrations believed to have taken place in Southwest Louisiana was on Tuesday, February 21, 1882. The first Miss Mardi Gras of Imperial Calcasieu was crowned in 1983 and the title went to Miss Christine Marie Campbell.
