Buford Football 2012 AAA State champions

Buford Football To the Buford Community and Our Guests: On behalf of the Buford Board of Education and the Buford City School System, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Tom Riden Stadium at Buford High School.  The Buford City School System has a strong tradition of football and a program that has been a source of pride for many years.  The Buford football team has the distinct honor of being the 1978 and 2001 “A” Football State Champions and the 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 “AA” Football State Champions, and the 2012 “AAA” Football State Champions.  Among other accomplishments are an amazing 181 wins and only 10 losses in the past 13 seasons, a record for football programs in the state of Georgia.  With each year, the program is growing and making strides to build upon its many successes and Buford Tradition.   Coach Jess Simpson and his assistants have provided strong leadership and dedication to the BHS football program.  However, our program is a combined effort of many talented groups, including the Marching Band of Wolves, directed by Matt Young and assistants, and the Wolves cheerleading squad, coached by Lisa Cole and assistants.  The faculty and staff are also included in this group because of their high academic expectations.  As a result of these high expectations, many BHS student athletes and musicians have gone on to participate and find much success at the college level.   Buford High School continues to be recognized as a leader for its commitment to academic quality and an overall standard of excellence in the total school program.  The community and fan support of the BHS extracurricular programs makes a difference in the lives of young people.  Together, let us continue to support and take pride in our BHS Wolves!

Family is what makes Buford unique, and I am so grateful to be a part of this community. We are very fortunate to have phenomenal support from our Board of Education, Board of Commissioners, Central Office, and community members. This support translates into the many successes that occur at Buford High School on a daily basis. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Coach Jess Simpson and his staff, the Marching Band of Wolves led by Mr. Matt Young, and the Wolves Cheerleading Squad led by Ms. Lisa Cole. Their combined efforts make Friday nights in Buford, Georgia incredibly special. Thank you for your support of our school and community. Join me at all of our football games and other athletic and extra-curricular events this year as we continue building the tradition of excellence at Buford High School! Have a great evening!

Ryan Daniel Memorial Scholarship Tragically, on the morning of January 26, 2012, the Buford Community lost one of its favorite and most beloved sons. Ryan Daniel – Buford Student, Athlete, Teacher and Coach is no longer here, but his memory and legacy will always remain with us.   Ryan Daniel loved others and he loved Buford. He was a gentle giant who considered himself a servant and a caretaker of all he encountered. He lived each day to make the lives of those around him better – a smile, kind word, a great quote, or a selfless act of service were his trademarks.   If RD was here tonight he would remind us to love the Lord, to love each other, and to “get better every day”!   Buford High School, along with with Ryan’s family and friends, began an annual graduation tradition of awarding the Ryan Daniel Memorial Scholarship in 2012. Each Year the scholarship will be awarded to deserving student athletes who embody the heart and spirit of RD. The 2013 Recipients of the Ryan Daniel Memorial Scholarship were Deione Bledson, Coby Durden, Garrett Roebuck and Conner Simpson. This scholarship is funded by donations and proceeds from the Ryan Daniel Scholarship 5K that will be held on November 23, 2013. For more information on the 5K go to the Ryan Daniel Scholarship page on Facebook. Donations can also be made directly to Peoples Bank & Trust.

Championship Tradition The Buford Wolves

One can’t help but be aware of the rich tradition that is associated with this team and this school. There are people, now too old to go to the games, who still remember wearing a green jersey, men for whom “The Buford Wolves” still has great meaning. There are also young men, too young to be left alone in the stadium, who would one day like to wear a green jersey and be a part of the Wolves’ legacy. Tradition is a burden in many ways. A tradition like ours means you can’t quit, you can’t lose your cool, and you always have to show class, even when you aren’t up to it. You have to do some things you don’t want to do and do some things, you think you can’t do, simply because the tradition demands it of you. On the other hand, tradition is the thing that sustains us. It is that which allows us to prevail in ways we could not otherwise. We’re convinced that greatness in any field has to come from some kind of tradition. Our job is to make certain that the tradition that is the Buford High School Wolves means as much and stands for as much to those who are yet to come, as it has for us and those who have gone before us.

2003 Class “AA” STATE CHAMPIONS This year we are absolutely thrilled to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the 2003 State Championship Team. In 2003 the Wolves capped off an unbelievable season with a 31-3 win over Charlton County and their third straight State Championship. This victory extended Buford’s winning streak to 45 consecutive games, 2 short of the all-time Georgia record. Their stingy defense had an impressive 5 shutouts while the explosive offense, led by all-time touchdown record holder Darius Walker, averaged 47.3 points per game. This memorable senior class finished with a 4-year record of 58-2.
