What is ECDIS mandation? The International Maritime Organization (IMO) approved amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) mandating the fitting of Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) at the 86th session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) in June 2009. The amendment to SOLAS means that all large passenger, tanker and cargo ships will be obliged to fit ECDIS on a rolling timetable that begins in July 2012. How your fleet will be affected? Fitting of ECDIS will become mandatory in a rolling timetable that begins in July 2012. The legislation will be phased by vessel type and size to eventually apply to almost all large merchant vessels and passenger ships. Use the diagram to determine which of your ships will be affected and when. The timetable for newbuilds is based on the date the vessel’s keel is laid. Existing vessels will be required to fit ECDIS in advance of the first survey after the implementation date. There are no requirements for existing cargo vessels of less than 10,000 gross tons. Flag States may exempt vessels that will be taken permanently out of service within two years of the implementation date.
Integrated Navigation Systems
CAIM ECDIS READY is a one-stop-shop where you can find hardware supply and installation, official digital and paper chart data supply, licence management, updates and training. Our goal is to assist the mariner to: • Ensuring safe passage • Improve efficiency. • Save fuel • Reduce operating costs Simrad Maris ECDIS900 MK5 - MK15 The Simrad MARIS ECDIS900 MK15 is an IMO- type approved navigation system, designed for use aboard SOLAS vessels subject to ECDIS carriage mandates such as merchant cargo ships and tankers. Easy to use with a standard Windows PC interface, the ECDIS900 delivers precise navigation with comprehensive route planning and optimisation tools, integrated chart management and ordering, radar overlay, and optional highly customisable conning display. All-in-One PC Solution The ECDIS900 MK15 includes a 24-inch ‘all-in-one’ flat panel display with integrated Windows PC, suitable for pedestal, table or flush-mount installation. The single-unit design, including four integrated NMEA0183 ports, dual Ethernet ports, and AC/DC power supply, allows for simple installation in a variety of locations, including consoles or tables with limited space where a separate display and ECDIS processor may prove impractical. Advanced Route Planning and Optimisation The ECDIS900 offers powerful route planning tools, with integrated Voyage Decision Support (VDS) for route optimisation. Voyage Decision Support assists navigators in selecting a route most likely to provide an on-time arrival, avoid poor weather conditions, and optimise fuel consumption. Taking into consideration detailed ship information and both current and forecasted weather, VDS evaluates multiple route options and highlights the risks and benefits of each. The user may then select and begin navigation of the preferred route. The ECDIS900’s Search And Rescue (SAR) moduleautomatically creates drift-compensated routes for search patterns, including Expanding Square, Sector, and Parallel Tracks. Precise Navigation Tools The ECDIS900 offers tools to facilitate safe and precise navigation, including position prediction and docking assistance. The Predictor module calculates future ship positions based on GPS, gyro, speed and course data, and displays the full ship’s outline extended forward in time. In narrow waters, this provides an accurate visual representation of the entire ship’s position throughout turns – allowing the navigator to optimise speed and rate of turn accordingly. The Docking module helps to facilitate safe docking manoeuvres by calculating and clearly displaying the ship’s distance and approach speed to both bow and stern docking points. During docking the ship’s current, historical, and predicted future positions are alsodisplayed graphically on the current chart.
Training & Simulators
TRAINING & SIMULATORS CAIM, in cooperation with the ACMA Enterprise STCW Approved Training Center, provides a ‘flag-state’ approved ECDIS IMO Model Course 1.27 in accordance to the latest STCW 2010. This course teaches the navigator to get the most out of their equipment and particularly familiarizes the user with using traditional navigational methods on the ECDIS. In addition to this OCIMF has made it a mandatory requirement for their members (VIQ/tanker ships) that bridge officers should undergo equipment specific ECDIS familiarization training. Training can be divided into two fundamental courses: • STCW ECDIS Generic Course (40 hours, 5 days) • ECDIS Type-Specific Course (1 day) STCW ECDIS Generic Course, performed according to the IMO Model Course 1.27 (The Operational Use Of Electronic Chart Display And Information System - ECDIS), shows the trainee how to safely navigate by using ECDIS, including: • Concept & Capability • Familiarisation • Principal Types of Electronic Chart • Legal Aspects • ECDIS Data • Additional Information & Manual Corrections • Defining Safe Water • Limiting Danger Lines & Clearing Bearings • Presentation of Data • Route Planning • Route Monitoring • Chart Updating • Sensors • Errors & Alarms • Voyage Data Recording • Backup Systems • Confined Waters Planning • Fixing ECDIS Type-Specific Course has been designed for trainees who have completed ECDIS Generic Course IMO Model 1.27 and now require equipment specific training. The course has been designed for Officers and other persons with navigational responsibilities to familiarize with the menu structure and practical use on the actual ECDIS equipment to cement understanding. As MARIS accredited distributor and installer, CAIM provides ECDIS Type-Specific Course directly onboard. We can also provide CBT (Computer Based Training) Modules covering all functions that a MARIS ECDIS operator must be able to demonstrate on the relevant ECDIS equipment in question to be IMO and ISM compliant. Please contact our “Digital Dept” and you will receive an offer more than attractive and the best support on training. CAIM supplies simulator systems for the professional training and certification of sea specialists. The simulators enables training in different maritime specialties. The current simulation product line covers practically every aspect of modern ship operation including bridge operations, communications/GMDSS, VTS, engine room, liquid cargo handling and crisis management.
