Dear friends of CATC, Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC) has been opening the door to greater educational opportunities and launching talented students on the path to leadership for over 20 years. When The Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW) opened its doors in 1989, CATC was created to help ensure that the school was a reflection of this wonderful city that we live in, drawing on the many talents of children from every neighborhood in Chicago, regardless of financial need. Now, over twenty years later, we are proud to say that over 30% of all students who have attended FXW have received financial support, thanks to the generosity of donors to CATC. As we move into our third decade, we hope to continue transforming the lives of Chicago’s children. But we know that this will be impossible without the continued commitment and engagement of our many partners, supporters and friends. We hope that we can count on you to partner with us in changing the course of a child’s life by making a gift to CATC. Thank you for your support.

Supporting Our Children’s Futures Making a difference through programs designed to transform the lives of promising young children and enrich our community takes revenue. This year Children at the Crossroads Foundation raised $1,397,912 from individuals, corporations and foundations. Here is a brief summary of our fundraising activities: Over 400 attended Children at the Crossroads Foundation’s 22nd annual Scholarship Dinner, raising over $330,967 for our scholarship program. This year’s dinner honored longtime CATC supporter, Eve Tyree, as the recipient of the Founder’s Award and Board Member, Lisa Ruble Murphy, as the recipient of the Heart of the Crossroads Award.

A record 330 golfers showed their support for Children at the Crossroads Foundation at the Children at the Crossroads Foundation Invitational Golf Outing.

Over 158 children (and their mommies and daddies) turned out for the 5th annual Ultimate Family Playdate, featuring a full schedule of singing, dancing and messy art projects. The event raised over $17,500 for our scholarship program.

Parishioners at Old Saint Patrick’s Church and Holy Name Cathedral showed their support for our scholars by participating in our annual Scholarship Sunday fundraisers, which raised over $86,000 for our program.

Bequests from donors who included Children at the Crossroads Foundation in their will or estate plan totaled $297,000.00.

Mariana Gonzalez Class of 2007 Mariana was born to working class parents living on the southeast side of Chicago. Like many working class families, the Gonazalez struggled to make ends meet, and paying for private school was not even a consideration.

Mariana enrolled at FXW and excelled academically.

Thanks to Mariana’s hard work and the support of the faculty and staff at FXW, she was admitted to St. Ignatius and was offered a full scholarship. She excelled academically at the school, and graduated in June 2011 at the top of her class. She received a full scholarship to Georgetown University and is currently majoring in International Studies with a minor in Portuguese.

Jennifer O’Connor Class of 2007 Jennifer discovered her passion at FXW. Beginning in the third grade, she captured each and every day of her FXW experience on film, thanks to a video camera that she received as a gift. Now, nearly a decade later, she is pursuing a degree in film and journalism at the University of Denver.

“I was one of four children, all very close in age, so an FXW education would not have been possible without the support of my CATC scholarship,” she explains.

While a student at FXW, Jennifer became active with the Foundations Youth Ministry at Old St. Patrick’s Church. The group encourages teen volunteerism in and around Chicago and sponsors service trips to more distant locations such as hurricane-ravaged New Orleans. Jennifer chronicled these trips on film, creating professional-quality travelogues and inspiring other students through her leadership.

Her passion for film continued through her high school years at The Francis Parker School, and at college at the University of Denver. This past summer, Jennifer interned at local CBS affiliate, WTTW, and will travel to London for a film and television internship this fall. “FXW was an incredible school.

Ari Fulton Class of 2001 Ari Fulton knew she wanted to graduate from college since she was 8 years old. She was raised by a mother and grandmother in a turbulent urban neighborhood in Chicago. Money was tight and her family struggled, but her mother recognized that, “The road to success should not be left to chance. It is only achieved when opportunity meets hard work and persistence,” says Fulton.

During her time at FXW, Ari was exposed to her lifelong passion, the arts. In addition to sparking her passion, they taught her that she was just as special and as important as each of her classmates, despite the fact that she struggled with dyslexia and was challenged by her home environment. Ari came to believe that, “No matter the living environment, a child has the right and the ability to prosper.”

After graduating from FXW, Ari went on to attend high school at the Chicago Academy for the Arts, and later majored in theater design at DePaul University. Currently, she is working on her master’s degree, studying stage design for film and theater at NYU. NYU’s master program is extremely competitive, only admitting 6 applicants a year. Not only was she able to land one of these coveted spots, she was also awarded a full tuition scholarship.

When asked what the biggest gift that FXW has given her, she responded, “The belief that that no goal, no dream would be out of my reach if I worked hard.”
