Vasile Randu Luxemburger Wort

A traveller once said on returning from Greece: “In the hours of the afternoon, the deep blue of the sea becomes a rare source of light. It’s as if it begins to take the form of an Impressionist painting, with its hazy water, whose ambiguity makes time stand still. As the light plays games, the different shades make strange vibrations, and the water suddenly turns into music.” Gestural and lyrical, abstract and yet unusual, the work of Sofia Petropoulou recalls the Mediterranean, with its vast expanses of translucent blue.

Landscapes and figures emerge first as recollections and then as iconography in the work of Sofia Petropoulou. The flow of colour on the canvas is reminiscent of places visited or narrated and of people met or imagined- not as they might have been but as they are recalled. Sofia Petropoulou creates works that inspire a dialogue between the heart and the mind. Her work indeed constitutes one of the most noteworthy chapters in contemporary Greek painting.
