‘Drawn from History’ presents the work of American artist Elise Ansel, who having explored the collections of London has taken some of our most familiar Old Masters and iconic paintings and used them as inspiration for her own works or ‘translations’.

The artist’s interpretations of works by Masters such as Titian, Rubens and Manet create an exhibition showcasing vibrant, alluring oils together with delicate, intimate watercolour studies and preparatory drawings.

Ansel’s proficiency in both palette and form allows her to render illustrious narratives into shapes and colours, laden with suggestive brushstrokes; a method inspired by Cézanne.

“The work of Frank Auerbach has always been a great source of inspiration for me. I saw a catalogue of an exhibition he had at the National Gallery in 1995, entitled ‘Working After the Masters’. This, in conjunction with seeing Gerhard Richter's series of abstract paintings based on Titian's Annunciation in the church of San Salvador in Venice, made me realise that translations of Old Master Works could be the subject of serious contemporary painting.”
