Biography Mario Piraino Born: 1946 Italy Migrated to Australia as a 9 year old in 1955 Grew up in Melbourne and attended Melbourne University achieving a Bachelor of Engineering, Civil Construction. Started work as a Civil Engineer and after a short while opened his own furniture and bedding business in Heidelberg, Victoria. This business grew over time with Mario having a number of furniture outlets throughout suburban Melbourne. In 1996 Mario realised that bedding hadn’t had substantial change over time noting that mattresses were all quite similar with varying spring systems, comfort layers made from various products. He also identified that mattresses did not cater for varying shapes, sizes and weights of the people purchasing them. Mario, using engineering principles then embarked on redesigning mattresses and beds that would provide proper support and spinal alignment that could be varied and adjusted to suite the individual. Mario undertook research to understand how the body varies in both shape and weight along its length; however, there was no published data providing this information. With the help of the Chiropractors’ and Physiotherapists’ Associations as well as the Melbourne City Morgue, Mario settled on a model body and a set of common incremental variations on which to base his calculations Trading as ‘His & Hers Orthopaedic Beds’, ‘Health Beds International’ and ‘Beds for Backs’, Mario designed and produced two mattress ranges, and a base range that incorporate body zones and adjustability reflective of actual weight and shape variations in the human body. He also designed an electric bed with automatic lumbar support. Mario had a number of scientific studies undertaken on these new designs to ensure what he had set out to achieve actually worked. More recently Mario engaged one of Australia’s leading Safety and Ergonomist Consultancies to undertake an independent review of these designs to ascertain if they were indeed ergonomically designed or the required ergonomic features were included to allow the claim they were “ergonomic”. Mario, was before his time in developing beds that not only incorporated body zones, reflected the need to address actual weight, shape and height variations of the human form and were actually adjustable and incorporated ergonomic principles. The Ergolife series of bed designs marketed by Ergonomic Beds International is the only ergonomic bed on the market today.
