LETTER FROM CAD PRESIDENT Diversity in Society: Intersectionationality and embracing our deaf community As an organization, California Association of the Deaf (CAD) is the oldest civil rights movement in California. Its mission is to preserve, protect and promote linguistic, human, and civil rights for all Deaf Californians. Concerned about our rights, the spectrum of issues on various important subjects such as deaf seniors, employment, deaf-blind, CODAs, Mental illness, interpreting and deaf owned business allow the members of CAD have a place to speak their voice freely and help support those around them unconditionally.

Two years ago, when I decided to run for President in 2017, I said during my campaign presentation that I would commit myself to the current issues that people of color have raised and help guide society with the understanding of what is intersectionationality. I wanted CAD to recognize our people of color’s talent and their devotion to work together on various task forces and standing committees as one big unified organization.

CAD invited Dr. Carla Garica-Fernandez to present the community her presentation, “Radical Healing and Activism.” It was really a successful workshop because of the heavy, healthy, positive discussion led around the room. Thus, CAD decided to host a separate workshop to solely focus on social justice and others related to intersectionality; partnering with CSUN Deaf Study Department soon to come this Fall.

With this in mind, not only is Deaf Education CAD’s main advocacy focus because of the recent oppression and discrimination we’ve seen recently within the media, CAD’s pathway to accountability as the premier leadership advocacy organization for Deaf California’s is refered to Dr. Laurene Simms’s vlog, “3R: Revisit, Rethink, Re-educate.” This highlights that we, Deaf people, need to “own it”. It is more imperative that the Deaf Community utilizes CAD and optimizes the diversity amongst them alongside promoting Deaf Education within the milestones.

Thus, I have decided to run again as CAD President. I am continuing my commitment and my passion to make sure that ourvision as deaf members of California is present within our society. They [people of color] are counting on you and I to continue to spread diversity and love.

Education Symposium: Addressing Intersectionality in Education

DEAF EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM PRESENTERS Roberto Cabrera Senior Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor ASL instructor at community colleges

Session Description: The DeafBlind People of Colors community in California has been growing strong in the last few years as more DeafBlind Leaders of Colors have emerged.

This workshop is an opportunity to explore the impact on identity development in young DeafBlind People of Colors. The workshop is an opportunity to apply the ProTactile philosophy in promoting young DeafBlind People of Colors.

Biography: Roberto is a mentor of the core team with DeafBlind Interpreting National Training and Resource Center and one of the leading mentors with DeafBlind Interpreting Training Institute at Western Oregon University. Roberto is representing different organizations: Counsil de Manos, California Manos del Corazon, and Southern California Association of the DeafBlind. As an active community member, Roberto has embraced his intersectionality identities – Third Generation DeafBlind, Dominican and Queer. Besides community involvement, Roberto loves chatting with people in ProTactile American Sign Language.

Raquel Espinoza-Ortega Galludet Student

Session Description: Young people are less likely to be open with people of higher status or “privileged” people in fear of having their deepest fears and secrets exposed, leading to insecurity and possibility of self-isolation.

Biography: Raquel, Better known as Taz to many friends and colleagues, we born and raised in Los Angeles, California. As very family-oriented Mexican-American woman, she enjoys spending time with her family and dog and appreciated their on-going support for her. She also is involved in her local community by contributing her time as much as she could. After graduating from Marlton School in 2012, she attended National Technical Institutive of the Deaf, one of nine colleges in Rochester Institutes of Technology. Her major at the time was Information Technology.

However, she couldn’t see herself in this field of career, so she transferred to Mount San Antonio College in California, studying General Education, but it did not last long. It wasn’t until she attended Greater Los Angeles Agency of Deafness Inc (GLAD) event where she was volunteering at a booth that she finally realized her true passion. She was approached by one of the event directors who request her assistance in providing an interpretation for a woman with low vision. Despite not having experiences, Taz proceed with the woman’s approval. After the event had ended, the woman expressed a deep gratitude. At another event where John Maucere was performing, she was asked to copy sign for a group of deaf people with low vision. After she was done, she received so much praise that she knew what she wanted to do with her life. Deaf Interpreting became her passion. Currently, Taz is attending Gallaudet University, situated in Washington D. C. This coming spring, she will be receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Interpretation. Despite many obstacles that occurred during her journey, she persevered and achieved her dreams.

Taz is hoping to become a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) to bring positivity and hopes in her future. She knows that her future is full of promises and will not abandon hopes and works hard to ensure that her dreams become realities.

DEAF EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM PRESENTERS Susan Gonzalez

Community activity, educator, advocate, and private practice attorney

Biography: Susan attended University of Calfironia - Davis, California State University - San Francisco, New College of California School of Law, and Golden Gate University School of Law LLM Program. A Bay Area native, Susan began her community activism with a variety of grassroots organizations committed to HIV/AIDS education, communication access, equality and animal rights. Susan works at Deaf Counseling Advocacy and Referral Agency (DCARA) as their Systemic Advocacy Coordinator. The majority of Susan's time at DCARA is devoted to IEP Advocacy working with families whose children experience instiutional discrimination at school.

Mingchen Yang High School Teacher, CAD South Director at Large, retired SCADA president

Session Description: The word “intersectionality” seems to be popping up everywhere. I believe that people should recognize the vital importance of intersectionality and take it into account for future endeavors. Based on my past experiences, I have encountered with number of discriminations and disadvantages at school.

Biography: Mingchen Yang (aka Ming) was born in Taichung, Taiwan. She was born hearing; then she became deaf at 8 months old. During 1980, Mingchen stayed with her beloved grandma and older hearing sister while her parents moved to America to find a job and a place to settle down. After a year, her grandma bought Ming and her sister to America for her parents. She went to oral program at Longfellow Elementary School. Next, she went to hearing school, Parras Middle School in Redondo Beach. She was the only deaf student at that time. When she was in eighth grade, her itinerant teacher taught her how to use ASL. Then, she enrolled the mainstreamed program at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. She finally found to fit in a group who were deaf like her. She received an AA degree from El Camino College, and then BA in Deaf Studies and teaching credential from California State University, Northridge (CSUN).

She taught at Marlton School and was involved in students’ life activities such as cheer coach, academic bowl assistant coach, science club advisor, student council advisor, yearbook club advisor, class sponsor advisor, and athletic director assistant. After ten years, she decided to start a new journey and taught at South Hills High School in West Covina. She continues to be an academic bowl assistant coach and school club advisor. Beside her work and school life, she was a treasurer (8 years) and a president (6 years) of Southern California Asian Deaf Association (SCADA). She loves to encourage Deaf Asians in finding their own identity, culture, and selfesteem. The SCADA board recently hosted a big successful event - 20th Anniversary Gala on June 22, 2019. On that day, she was retired from being a president.

EMBRACING DEAF COMMUNITY PRESENTERS Paola Morales CODA

Session Description: we journey through the Coda (Child/ren of Deaf Adults) identity formation as heritage speakers and language brokers and their mutual relationships within the deaf communities.

We will explore what we already understand about CODAs, their differences and similarities and what we understand about their careers as sign language interpreters.

Biography: As private practice Deaf Parented Sign Language Interpreter of Color, Paola follows an Integrated Model of Interpreting. She provides consulting and multilingual interpreting services in ASL, English, Spanish, and LSM. Her specializations include Mental Health and Performing Arts. She passionate about transformative justice and healing within the Deaf World, and ethics and equity within the Deaf related fields in the Americas and abroad using intersectionality and critical race studies as frameworks. She recently concluded and completed work with the The CATIE Center's Department of Education award grant. Currently, Paola is in the UNC Project CLIMB, and serving the Southern California Registry of Interpreters for The Deaf board in her first term as Deaf parented Member-atLarge. Previously, she served RID at the national level.

Neil Sprouse CAD Media, Advocacy Session Description: The presenter will talk about how Educators helped him to embrace his identities by providing him access to Literature written by the Gay/queer community. He will provide narratives on how the likes of James Baldwin, e.e. cumming, Walt Whitman, Fredico García Lorca, Alice Walker, Raymond Luzack, Shakespeare, and others shaped his worldview and embrace his place and find his voice.

Biography: Neil is a proud Southern gentleman hailing from Virginia living in Los Angeles. He attended mainstream school and later graduated from Virginia School for the Deaf in Staunton. He studied Theatre Arts at Gallaudet University. His greatest passions lie in Literature and ASL Translation! Fact: he rarely leaves his home without a book in his hand or bag!

EMBRACING DEAF COMMUNITY PRESENTERS Millie Stansfield Mental Health

Session Description: “My Mind Matters” focuses on bringing information and empowerment to Deaf individuals to utilize resources to enhance their own mental health.“Language Deprivation Syndrome” and its impact on the mental health of Deaf Individuals will be explored with research, data, and personal experience. Participants will then utilize this information to formulate a working plan in Mental Health for CAD to incorporate into their goals.

Biography: Millie has been working in the Deaf Community for 55 years, starting as a dorm counselor at the Berkeley Deaf School, (where she developed a K-12 Family Life Program; at UCCD as their first MH interpreter, while pursuing Bachelor and Graduate Degrees in Counseling. She was Program Director of CCHIP’s Deaf Family Program, unique to providing wrap-a-round services, and developed the first Deaf Parent class in the Bay Area. After a car accident she had to retire as disabled, and after some years of healing was able to develop a private practice, which she continues now on a small scale.Two years ago, Millie ‘birthed’ the concept of ‘My Mind Matters’to help Break the Stigma, Silence and Shameof mental health issues in our Deaf Community. She is grateful to DCARA, DCCS and CSD to bring this workshop to fruition.

Kay Vincent CAD Chairperson of Senior Citzen Taskforce Session Description: In this session, we will discuss the need to prepare as one ages, discuss choices faced as we age, and make plans to document one’s choices.

Biography: Ms. Vincent holds the following degrees: B.A. Social Philosophy from Gallaudet University; M.A. Deaf Education from Western Maryland College; and M.A. Educational Administration & Supervision from CA State University, Northridge. Ms. Vincent’s experience spans work in various settings such as secondary and post-secondary education; non-profit agencies, corporates and selfemployment. Ms. Vincent is currently retired. She served as caregiver for 15 years, and taught as an Adjunct Faculty, ASL teacher at several community colleges, and taught Basic Literacy skills to deaf adults for 4 years. She also holds partial certification as a Deaf Interpreter for deaf-blind students at the community college level. Ms. Vincent’s business and management experience includes VRS vendor Regional Manager, Manager for two projects from U.S. Dept of Education, DCARA branch Outreach Manager, Executive Director at Deaf Community Services, San Diego and served as Board member for CAD.

The transitioning colors in the background shift from darkness and become lighter. It reflects the experience of the transition and knowing how to navigate through the light.
