ABOUT OUR A small town, but with big hopes and even greater dreams! Avalon’s senior class of 2020 will always attempt to persevere through difficult obstacles. Not even the great pandemic of COVID-19 could keep us apart while being in quarantine. The school’s zoom meetings, social media and prayers are what have kept us in contact and striving for the day of gradu-

ation. Our hopes of creating a better world outside of school is alive and remains part of our vision upon graduation. Many will be going into different job entities and parts of the world, where we all hope to make a difference in not only our lives, but in others’ as well. Some of us will go to college, others to trade schools or working in business. At the end of the day, our future is now and the only thing

that can stop us is ourselves. The dreams we hold are far greater than anyone can imagine! Fly high, Eagles of 2020!

ABOUT OUR “THE POTENTIAL WE HAVE AS A GROUP IS LIMITLESS.”

Throughout the years, the Class of 2020 has been anxiously anticipating the end of our senior year. It was promised to be the culmination of all our years of education— the best part of high school, the part that we have all been waiting for. Unfortunately for the Class of 2020, that will most likely not come to fruition due to the COVID-19 crisis currently sweeping the globe. It is easy to be disappointed; after all, everyone told us this would be the best part of our lives up until this point. Instead of spending our last day saying goodbye, we spent it cracking jokes and doing homework like it was just another day. It is easy to feel like we never got the sendoff for which we waited so long. However, in the wake of all the panic and all the disappointment, it is important to think back on the times we did get to spend together. For me, those times were cheering on the football team from the stands as we beat team after team on our way to the playoffs. Those times were walking into Ennis High School on our first day and realizing that we were now at the top of the food chain and remembering how we felt untouchable. Those times were driving to a fast food restaurant after football games, not to eat, but to spend time with the people that make life more bearable. Those times were going to our banquets, whether it was for Soccer, Band, Theatre, Football, or anything else. it felt nice to get dressed up and party with the people we have grown to love over the past four years

JACOB SLOVAK Ennis Student Council President

of high school. Those times were when we lost to the team that went on to win the State Championship, but made sure they would never forget the Ennis Lions. Those times were many more memories, each one different for each person, and each one equally as important. Even though we may have finished sooner than expected, or even sooner than we wanted, these memories will not fade so easily. It is easy for others to tell us to suck it up, or maybe for them to say that none of these things matter anyway, but it is imperative that we do not let others invalidate our experience. There will always be times of hardship, when the world will kick us when we are down, but letting it beat us and giving up is not in line with the character of the Class of 2020. that I know. The seniors I know are talented, brave, kind, tenacious, inclusive, empathetic, never give up, and have many more remarkable and sometimes overlooked traits. The potential we have as a group is limitless. As some of the first adult members of Generation Z, we owe it to ourselves and those who will come after us to keep trying, even in the face of adversity— and we will not disappoint. So for those of us who like art, we will keep on creating. For those of us who play sports, we will keep practicing. For those of us who play music, we will play it loud. And as the country and community persevere through uncertain times, the Class of 2020 will persevere as well. We will always remember the heartbreak of losing something we looked forward to so soon, but we will never forget the memories that we made along the way. I know that one day we will come out of this crisis stronger than ever, and one day, we will shake the world.

ABOUT OUR “AT EVERY SPORTING EVENT, CLASS PERIOD, OR EVEN WALKING THE HALLWAYS, WE FOUND A WAY TO MAKE IT MEMORABLE.”

As an active member of the Class of 2020, I have grown up with all of my classmates and have seen what makes them rejoice or be saddened. These past months, I have realized that we as the Class of 2020 rely so heavily on the memories we make with people we care about. We never want to miss out on an extraordinary moment. We absorb every memory we make with our friends and family and cherish them. At every sporting event, class period, or even walking the hallways, we found a way to make it mem-

orable to us. It has been hard knowing we cannot participate in the last events of our high school years with our classmates. These were supposed to be the best last three months of high school. We wanted to make those memories together because our bond as a class is very significant to us. We have supported each other through

anything and everything. We have laughed, been worried, cried, and lived life together. Every moment we have been through with each other is something we hold special to our hearts because without them, we wouldn’t have been able to grow. Class of 2020 at Ferris High School, thank you for all the memories you have given me. I love y’all.

ABOUT OUR On Friday, March 6, we never would have thought that day could have possibly been our last. Livestock shows, sporting events, band contests, end of the year banquets, and senior activities were all canceled in the blink of an eye. In life, when situations like this arise, people might consider giving up… but not us. Not the class of 2020. We were born

“ALTHOUGH WE’RE A SMALL CLASS... WE STAND TALL AND FULL OF PRIDE OVER OUR MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS.”

into this world during 9-11 and now we are graduating during a pandemic. We will not let these times define who we are. Although we are a small class from the Biggest Little Town in Texas, we stand tall and full of pride over our many accomplishments. We have many all-district and all-state honorees for sports and state qualifiers in Band and FFA. We have seniors that will serve in the military to fight for our country. With students preparing to major in many areas, from cosmetology and welding to nursing and education, we will impact this world as athletes, musicians, agriculturists, educators, and well-rounded leaders. Most importantly to us, we will forever be Gladiators. Our story does not end here. We must keep pushing towards our end goals. We must wipe away those tears of sorrow and have eyes full of dedication. We must wipe that frown off our face and turn it into a smile, knowing better days are to come. We must never give up because that would be failing before we ever try. We can, and will, overcome. Just put God first and everything will fill in from there. Our peak has yet to be achieved. So to the Italy High School Class of 2020, whenever

you reflect on times gone by, remember how we so proudly held our heads high!

ABOUT OUR Life High School Waxahachie has overly prepared the Class of 2020 for this thing called life. The staff has instilled life skills in us through strong academics, character training, and partnerships with parents and the community. However, no matter how well prepared we are, there is no way to truly prepare for

“LIFE SCHOOL HAS IMPACTED OUR LIVES IN A POSITIVE WAY AND WILL BE THE PEOPLE WE THANK WHEN OUR FUTURES BEGIN TO BLOOM.”

life’s uncertainties. We had plans to do so many great things but those plans were interrupted by an unforeseen circumstance. During this time we have to embrace the good and continue L-I-F-E. L - Lean and depend on God because he has the ultimate plan for our life I - Inspire someone else during these uncertain times F - Fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12) E - Encourage one another This year was not what we expected it to be. Because of the coronavirus, we had most of the memories we were excited to create stripped away: our senior prom, final sporting events, final school activities and senior trips. However, this huge loss has made us look back at all the things we WERE able to do in our high school career. I am very appreciative for Life School, for allowing the Class of 2020 to create these long-lasting memories. Life School has impacted our lives in a positive way and will be the people we thank when our futures began to bloom. the Class of 2020 has always had our ups and downs, but we always found the inner strength to pull ourselves together. Where we are now is not where we will stay because God’s plan

TONEE THOMPSON Life Waxahachie Senior Class President

will not cause us to stray. 2020 will be a year we will always remember. A year filled with disappointments that will lead to our destinies.

ABOUT OUR “TO OUR HOMETOWNS AND HIGH SCHOOL, WE’RE SAD TO SEE IT GO, BUT EXCITED TO USE WHAT YOU’VE TAUGHT US... IN CREATING OUR FUTURE.”

Throughout the last 12 years of our education, the class of 2020 has been told that we have “the best vision.” While this may have been a cool coincidence most of the time, the Maypearl High School graduating class of 2020 has proven this to be true. Although no one saw this pandemic coming, we have tried to make the best of it. Using online learning as a way to complete our high school experience is different than any other graduating class has gone through. However, our grade is filled with hard-working, dedicated and passionate people who strive daily to procure their future. Because of this, we aren’t willing to let anything come between us and what we hope to accomplish for ourselves. Although Maypearl is a small town, we hold the heart of Texas— where everything is bigger! Each member of the class of 2020 has a goal set for themselves and are actively working towards it. Through the Panther Academy program at Maypearl High School, we are blessed to have 16 students graduating with a high school diploma and from college with an associate’s degree at the same time. This is the largest number seen by Maypearl since the program started back in the 2013-2014 school year. Seven students are even graduating with their production welder certificates, and two others with a cosmetology certification. It is amazing to see all the bright minds at work in our school. The senior class, throughout our four years in high school, have brought about changes in our community and school. We started the peer tutoring program, where students can learn from upperclassmen in the mornings. We have assisted in revitalizing the NHS program and helped refocus it on community and school service. We have taken part in district planning meetings that discuss the goals of the school district for the upcoming year. As a highly involved class,

AINSLEY BROWN Maypearl Senior Class President/Salutatorian

we have re-established both the Band Club and Winter Guard programs, which had previously been discontinued. The Winter Guard program participated in four different competitions, with a senior as the director and choreographer. Through the help of a senior Cheer Captain, the MHS Cheer squad took part in its first UIL cheer competition and placed 25th at the state level. Both the girls and boys basketball teams have gone to multiple rounds of playoffs, with seniors leading. The volleyball team, with members of the class of 2020 aiding in their success, went through a total of 11 rounds of playoffs throughout their high school career. Many seniors in all of the sporting events were also awarded academic recognition. Another thing we are proud to have accomplished is helping set up the Musical Theatre class and, with the help of two theatre teachers, putting on the first Maypearl High School full-length musical production. I am very proud of what my senior class and I have accomplished throughout our high school career, and I am excited to see what we will make of our futures as we head out into the world as young adults. With immense help from people in our community, the Senior Class has been able to take part in our last FFA livestock sale by moving it online. It is amazing how people in Ellis county have decided to surround the senior class with love and encouragement by “adopting” those in our grade. We are blessed by the support system that has formed around us through this difficult time. We are thankful for those who have helped us make the most of online learning and the members of the community who have stepped up to assist all Ellis County school districts. To our hometowns and high school, we are sad to see it go, but excited to use what you have taught us about purpose, respect, involvement, determination, and enthusiasm to develop our panther P.R.I.D.E. that will aid us in creating our future. Thank you.

ABOUT OUR “EVEN THOUGH THIS ISN’T THE ENDING WE EXPECTED, WE’LL TAKE WHAT WE’VE LEARNED AND MAKE EVERYONE PROUD.”

On March 5, 2020, we left Midlothian High School for spring break. Little did we know that we would be leaving it forever as seniors. We have come a long way from where we began. Some of us have been here our whole lives, some of us have moved here and some have moved away, but our memories of each other will always be with us. We entered into this world around the tragic events of 9/11. This tragedy caused Americans to come together as one and because of that we learned how to persevere. We grew up in a country that was healing and overcoming obstacles. Since then, we have become a class that prevails. As we began kindergarten, we all became friends and got to enjoy our time having fun with each other. We began to form friendships that we still have today. As we moved through elementary we got to go on field trips, play at recess, go to book fairs, learn how to “play” the recorder, perform in school programs, compete at field day and so much more. We made good memories, but before we knew it middle school began. In middle school, there were new faces because it was no longer just one elementary. We began to venture out into new activities and to figure out who we were going to be as a person. Each of us found something we en-

RUSTIN RUSHING Midlothian Senior Class President

joyed, whether it was participating in a sport, a fine arts program, a club or academics. Everyone found a group of friends that shared a common interest. In middle school we began to develop ourselves even more into who we are today. Our traits and characteristics began to develop as we had to utilize them more. Classes started to be a little bit harder and life began to give us more responsibilities. We had to learn how to multitask and work harder. While school was becoming more difficult, we were able to conquer it and succeed. As we went through middle school we got a glimpse of what high school might be like, and soon enough we were there. When high school started there were some unfamiliar faces, but not too many. There were more classes available to help us find out what we might want to do in life. We gained more freedom and more activities to participate in. Soon we began to drive and work while becoming even more independent. We all learned how to manage our time between our lives inside and outside of school. We worked our way through high school, looking forward to our senior year while still taking everything in. Soon enough it was the beginning of our senior year. As we began our last first day of school, we received donuts so we could start our last year off right. We cheered on our football team at Friday night lights. We went to pep rallies and showed our school spirit. We got to see our peers recognized for their accomplishments

53

along the walls of our school. We were able to make senior parking spots a new tradition for our school as well. We began to look forward to all of the end of the year activities we knew were coming after spring break. Then this pandemic happened. At first it didn’t seem like a big deal, but soon it changed how our senior year would end. We didn’t get to end our senior year the way we wanted, but we will prevail once again. responsible for keeping us safe and risking their lives along the way. Even though this is not the ending we expected, we will take what we have learned and make everyone proud. We will continue

to be resilient, work hard, and persevere through life’s obstacles. We are PROUD Panthers and we are Midlothian High School’s Senior Class of 2020. GO2 & GO PANTHERS.

ABOUT OUR “THIS WILL BE THE EVENT THAT SHAPES OUR LIVES. INSTEAD OF BEING TORN DOWN BY IT, WE RISE ABOVE IT.”

2020. The year that my fellow classmates and I have been looking forward to since the first day we set foot in high school. We have dreamed and we have planned for the day when we would walk across the stage and receive our diplomas, our medals for winning the race. Little did we know four years ago that the time we spent together would go by faster than we thought. Too easily we got lost in the glamour of Friday night football games and excitement of school pep rallies. We submerged ourselves in academics while also forming friendships and making memories that will never be forgotten. So quickly we became absorbed in the “high school experience,” not realizing we were growing as individuals along the way. When senior year was finally upon us, we were astonished by how quickly it came. How could time have gone by so fast? When did sophomore year turn into senior year? We hadn’t realized how quickly high school truly goes by. At the same time, we found ourselves wishing for this year to pass by faster, dreading the push to make it through this final year. We were experiencing the accursed “senioritis.” Then suddenly, overnight, our year was done. If we had only known how quickly it would come to an end. Would we have done things differently? Enjoyed the moments we were given? We should be celebrating our great achievements, having parties, being recognized for the years of hard work. Instead,

KLOE JANSONIUS Midlothian Heritage Student Council President

we have been faced with the most unique challenge to ever faze a class of seniors: a global pandemic. The idea of it was a piece of fiction, initially. We would attend online school for a few weeks and then return to life as normal. But soon those few weeks turned into a few months, and we saw the final moments of our senior year slipping away from us. We were losing precious time with our friends who had turned into family, and our teachers whose classes we had come to love. We never sincerely appreciated the time we had because we thought we would have more of it. The virus, in short, ruined what was meant to be our best year of high school. However, regardless of what we have lost, we have been able to prove our resilience. In the face of this great adversary, we have proven to be strong. We have pushed through our online schooling and self-isolation in the pursuit of a diploma. All of our senior lasts have been ripped away from us, but we refuse to let it demolish our dreams of graduation. So I encourage my fellow seniors to stay strong. To continue to prove that we can make it through any circumstance. This will be the event that shapes our lives. Instead of being torn down by it, we rise above it. Show that we are courageous even in these terrifying times. Because in the end, we cannot change what this pandemic has taken away from us, but we can control how we respond. I hope that we will be recalled as the class who persevered through the worst possible travesty, and that our lasting legacy will be “Class of 2020 Strong.”

ABOUT OUR “THROUGH THE LAST THREE YEARS, WE HAVE GROWN TOGETHER, SUPPORTING ONE ANOTHER THROUGH GOOD TIMES AND TIMES OF CHALLENGES.

I first moved to Milford, Texas, after my freshman year of high school. During my first day of school at Milford High School, my classmates, the class of 2020, welcomed me right away. They showed me the ins and the outs of being at a small, rural district where seniors are leaders for the Pre-K through 11th grade students. The underclassman look up to the seniors as their heroes. Many of my classmates became some of my very close friends. The senior class of 2020 is one of the tightest knit groups of individuals I have ever been around. At the start of the year, we were challenged by our superintendent to be role models for the younger classes of Milford School. He also challenged us to raise the bar and expectations academically as bulldog scholars. The Milford graduating class of 2020 excelled on the volleyball court, football field, cross country course, basketball court, in UIL Academics, FFA, Band and in the classroom. The Bulldog Senior Class competed at the state level,

ROBERT ORNDORFF Milford Senior Class President

participating in both fall and winter activities. We faced the adversity of the health crisis and were denied the opportunity to compete in spring competitions. we were denied to continue our education at school and we missed out on all the other senior activities. We are a diverse class of individuals who have many different personalities and interests. Through the last three years, we have grown together, supporting one another through good times and times of challenges. We have depended on each other, we have made each other stronger, and we have celebrated our achievements together. I am thankful to be a part of the graduating class of 2020. The Milford Senior Class of 2020 is the only senior class that could endure those long days of isolation, of not being able to see each other and hang out together, of not having the opportunity to interact face to face with our teachers and not being able to finish our senior year as we had planned. The Milford High School graduating class of 2020 are Bulldogs. We are Milford. Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog.

ABOUT OUR “LET US NOT MOURN THE LOSS OF THE ‘LASTS’ THAT NEVER CAME. INSTEAD, LET’S CELEBRATE THE MANY ‘FIRSTS’ THAT ARE YET TO COME.”

As the summer of 2019 came to an end, we seniors prepared for our “year of lasts.” We all showed up to school early to take our last first-day-of-school pictures and then dug through old photos to find our first day of kindergarten picture to post side by side. We all decorated our mums, garters, and senior overalls for our last homecoming week. Student-athletes worked rigorously to be at their best for their last football game, volleyball tournament or track meet. Theater kids rehearsed relentlessly for their last opening night. Cheerleaders spent weeks prepping for their last pep rally. We dreamed of and shopped for our last prom. We have all had thoughts of our last day wearing uniforms, our last final exams, our last class, and our last day as high schoolers. Before the year had even started, we were all preparing for our “lasts.” However, what none of us were expecting was that many of those “lasts” would not come to pass. While we were all anticipating a grand finale of a senior year, we received an abrupt end to Act I of our lives. However, a

RACHEL QUINTANA Ovilla Christian School

shocking intermission is not the harbinger of an inadequate Act II. It only means that the story is not completely told yet. 2020 is more than just the year-of-lasts; it is also the year of so, so many firsts. Let us not mourn the loss of the “lasts” that never came. Instead, let’s celebrate the many “firsts” that are yet to come. We have so much to look forward to— like our first day on campus, our first college class, our first time living with roommates, our first time in a new city, a new state, and our first taste of independence. Our lives have only just begun. High school was only the first step of the extraordinary journey ahead. To my fellow graduating classmates at Ovilla Christian School, while our class may be small, the 18 of us are each unique and different from one another. We all have different opportunities, career paths and goals in mind. As we move onto the next phase of our lives, we will all be experiencing different “firsts” from one another, but that does not change the fact that we share many of the same “lasts” and a common origin. OCS will always be the home of our beginning.

ABOUT OUR “MY CLASS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE TO GET THE JOB DONE WHEN ASKED AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE TO DISPLAY EXTREME LEADERSHIP.

As the Senior Class President of the Palmer High School class of 2020, I have many great attributes to state about my graduating class. Although we have been presented quite an obstacle this year and had a significant portion of our senior year taken, we as a class have grown and adapted to the uneventful situation in the best ways possible. This year was one of the best years of my schooling career and it will forever be one to remember. Our class has always been close and we all care for each other very much. It is going to be hard to all go our separate ways, but I know everyone will be off to do great things and have bright futures ahead. I know we have each had unforgettable memories and made lifelong friends we will never forget. The graduating class of 2020 has definitely left our mark on Palmer High School and I know we will be remembered. Although the end of our year did not go as planned, we have accomplished many things this year together. My class has excelled in many areas, not only this year but throughout every year of high school

MARCOS ZAGALA Palmer Senior Class President

such as in FCCLA, Band, Art, UIL academics, athletics, and many other extracurricular activities. I am personally very proud of my classmates and all that we have achieved. It is definitely upsetting that we will not get to participate in several of the activities we have strived for since freshman year, but I know we will push past this unfortunate time together. My class has always been one to get the job done when asked and has always been one to display extreme leadership. I know my class has set a great example and has definitely set a high standard for the classes to follow. Palmer is my hometown and has been the only schooling I have known; there is no place I would rather be. I truly believe my class has contributed greatly to the welcoming atmosphere Palmer High School radiates. I am very honored and lucky to be able to graduate with my hardworking classmates. These are lifelong friends I will remember forever. I want to congratulate all my fellow graduates in this great accomplishment we have worked so hard for.

ABOUT OUR “DURING MY PAST FOUR YEARS AT RED OAK HIGH SCHOOL, I HAVE WITNESSED NOTHING LESS THAN MYSELF AND OTHERS PROSPERING THROUGH ACHIEVEMENT.”

Whenever I think of Red Oak High School, the first word that comes to mind is “change.” From freshman to senior year, it has been a delight to see the high school’s evolution. It is obvious that with change, there is growth. Since freshman year, I have always dreamed of all the memories that senior year should include. From the last first day of school to our graduation ceremony, I could not wait for all of the moments that my senior year would entail. My days in high school seemed like the initial incline of a roller coaster ride. You can hear the clicking noises and The coaster gets higher and higher as you accomplish so much throughout your high school journey. As we approached closer and closer to the top, moments that we have been waiting for since becoming a Red Oak Hawk all of a sudden came to an abrupt stop. However, you know in the back of your mind, to finish this journey, you must be patient and wait for the ride to begin clicking again. This is what it feels like to be a senior in the

ANIAH MOSBY Red Oak Senior Class President

Class of 2020. It is disappointing to see how many memorable moments we have not had the chance to experience yet. Nonetheless, I am blessed to have witnessed the growth and evolution of Red Oak High School from this view at the top of my high school roller coaster journey. During my past four years at Red Oak High School, I have witnessed nothing less than myself and others prospering through achievement. As I have blossomed into my senior year, I am personally grateful for Red Oak’s growth in academics, athletics, arts and overall comradery. As the senior class president, I feel as if I am the true embodiment of these characteristics. Throughout all four years of high school, I have been a varsity cheerleader, member of the band and am academically ranked in the Top 10 of the Class of 2020. The last four years of my life have been dedicated to Red Oak High School. I have enjoyed every moment and memory Red Oak has had to offer.

ABOUT OUR “... WHAT I WILL MISS MOST IS THE MEMORIES THAT I WOULD’VE HAD EACH AND EVERY DAY WITH MY CLASSMATES. I MISS THE COUNTLESS INTERACTIONS WITH THE STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND FACULTY.”

At the end of spring break, all the seniors were hearing about COVID-19. One by one, schools began to extend spring break and everyone was hoping that it would happen to us at Global High. But then it got extended and extended, and before long our senior year was gone. The senior year we had all looked forward to since stepping into the halls our freshman year was quickly cut short. All the fun senior things that everyone gets to participate in were disappearing before our eyes. In a normal year we would have senior week, which includes field trips to the park and zoo, senior prank day, senior skip day and senior sunset. Those events are now cancelled. other events such as prom, senior banquet and graduation all seem to be up in the air as to when or if they will happen. We were all looking forward to the fun parts of our senior year, but what I will miss most is the memories that I would have had each and every day with my classmates. I miss the countless interactions with the students, teachers and faculty that we shared every day. Our memories from this senior year started the very first day. I can remember there was a large group of us that all had a final that first day of school for our summer class at Navarro College. We made a pact to skip the first day of school. After we took our final exam, we thought of all our friends at school and all the teachers that we missed over the long summer break and

RACHAEL EDGAR Waxahachie Global Student Council President

decided to go to school. I personally only had one class by the time we got back to school, so I was not worried about missing the schoolwork but more concerned with missing out on the memories. Now those memories will be all that we have. We had fun and worked hard on planning events for the students of Global High. One day in Student Council Class, we were planning the dance and I tried to liven up the meeting by playing a game of “now or later,” so I brought Now and Later candy to class to get everyone motivated. We all laughed and had a great time, not realizing the planning would be our memory, not the events themselves. I will never forget just how nice the staff and teachers were to all of us students. Anytime you needed something or just needed a nice comment on a bad day, the family at Global High was there for you. Although we are all chained to our computers at home without seeing our friends, I can say that the sense of the Global family is still here. I know that is something I will miss after high school. Even though we are all in separate places to finish our senior year and are missing the traditional senior experiences, I think we will all get through it and make the most of the online memories we making now. Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

ABOUT OUR The bell finally rang at 3:55 pm on Thursday, March 5th and we took a deep sigh of relief. The neverending accumulation of homework and tests had finally been put on pause for a week of vacation and relaxation. We were suffering severe cases of Senioritis as we told our teachers, coaches and our friends to have a great spring break. While “Working for the Weekend” played overhead, we proceeded through the double doors, not knowing it was the last time we would ever walk through the halls of Waxahachie High School. We walked out not realizing we would never see some of the friends we’d made throughout the years again. We walked out not realizing that the Prom Dresses and rented tuxedos hanging in our closets would not be worn on the night we’d anticipated for the past four years. We walked out of WHS thinking a crippling global pandemic was

CAITLIN RICHARDSON Waxahachie Senior Class President

“WE WERE NEVER ALL IN THE SAME BOAT, BUT WE WERE ALWAYS IN THE SAME STORM; WE WERE ALWAYS THERE FOR EACH OTHER. ALWAYS SUPPORTING ONE ANOTHER, PUSHING EACH OTHER TOWARDS THE FINISH LINE.” about as likely as Mr. Buck not saying “...Roll Tribe” after an announcement (highly unlikely). We walked out not realizing that the hours put in on the baseball and softball fields, on the Jennifer Stevens Stage, on the track, in the band hall, in the art room, and into TSA projects and Academic UIL events were all in vain. The end of spring break came too soon (like it always does) and we watched populations across the United States become infected exponentially by the Coronavirus. We watched a week get tacked on to the end of our spring break, and then another week, and then another month until finally, WHS was forced to close indefinitely for the 2019-2020 school year. At first, we didn’t want to accept it. But the failure to acknowledge reality will not change reality. Despite the pain and the anger and the unfairness of it all, I ask that you let yourself feel. Feel the incredulity

of it. Feel it. Process it. Embrace it. And then, Overcome it. We are strong. No one and no virus can ever take away what we have accomplished up to this point. We struggled through four years of high school with various challenges we each had to face and overcome. We were never all in the same boat, but we were always in the same storm; we were always there for each other. Always supporting one another, pushing each other towards the finish line. This isn’t the finish of a 12-year journey we deserve, but we have grown an appreciation for what we once took for granted in our day-today lives. We have reaped the benefits of quarantine and excess freetime; building deeper relationships with our families, finally reading that book that had been collecting dust on our bookshelf, learning a new language, and enjoying our (sometimes failed) attempts at cooking and/or painting, to name a few. Not to mention how truly blessed we are for the support our class has received from our administrators,

ABOUT OUR “DON’T REMEMBER US AS THE SENIOR CLASS WHOSE LEGACY IS FOUNDED ON WHAT COULD’VE BEEN. REMEMBER US AS THE SENIOR CLASS WHOSE LEGACY IS LEFT BY WHAT WE DID DO.” parents and especially our Ellis County Community. We are all going to be different after all of this is said and done, and not just because of all of the weight gain and Netflix’s “Tiger King.” This is a topic that our children will read about in their history classes. This is an event that will shape us for years to come. We will emerge as the future leaders of the world. This pandemic, if anything, strengthened our resolve, strengthened our purpose, and will lead to a generation motivated to succeed and persevere in the face of

106

adversity. Our class will be forever remembered, but I speak for every Senior when I ask that you not remember us for our misfortunes. Don’t remember us as the senior class whose legacy is founded on what could have been. Remember us as the senior class whose legacy is left by what we did do. Remember that Rayna Ross scored over 1,000 points in her basketball career at WHS. Remember that Ben Barker was the Best Jazz Pianist in the State of Texas two years in a row.

Remember that Joshua Nutt collected hundreds of pairs of Jeans to donate and raise awareness for the homeless teenage population. Remember that every student that makes up the Class of 2020 has left behind a legacy of success that is worth being remembered. So here’s to the Class of 2020. Here’s to the Seniors forced to adapt to a global pandemic. To the Seniors who still bring positivity and determination out of the ashes of memories that will never be had. To all my fellow seniors, I honor you.

ABOUT OUR “I FEEL THAT THE LEVEL OF EDUCATION I’VE HAD AND THE ONE-ON-ONE RELATIONSHIPS WITH MY TEACHERS HAVE BEEN SO BENEFICIAL, BOTH SPIRITUALLY AND EDUCATIONALLY.”

Being a student at Waxahachie Prep my whole life has truly been a blessing. I have had so many genuine friendships, with not only my class and other fellow students, but the faculty and staff as well. I feel that the level of education I have had and the oneon-one relationships with my teachers have been so beneficial both spiritually and educationally. And because we have a smaller school with smaller classes, I have been able to grow close to my class and form amazing friendships over the years. Starting student council this year and being a part of it with my class has been such a great journey. I feel so blessed to have been a part of something that was not only fun to do with my class but also benefited others. The lessons I have learned and the memories I made at Waxahachie Prep and as being Student Council President are things I will treasure and take with me into the next chapter of my life attending Dallas Baptist University. I thank God for the opportunities He has given me, like going EMILY MORREN to WPA and being Student Council President. They were so amazing, and I couldn’t have asked for a better high school Waxahachie Prep experience. Student Council President

ABOUT OUR “EVEN IN TIMES SUCH AS THIS IN WHICH WE FIND OURSELVES HAVING TO BE ISOLATED, THE SENIOR CLASS STAYS TOGETHER, AS WE SUPPORT AND HELP EACH OTHER FROM A DISTANCE.”

One thing that someone may notice about Venus High School’s graduating class is how supportive we are of each other. If we ever need help with schoolwork, we always ask each other first before asking our teachers or professors. Also, if we know there is a senior who is participating in a competitive activity in either academics or athletics, we always make sure to cheer them on when we see them. As somebody who has attended Venus ISD and has known many of the current seniors since Pre-K, I’d say our senior class is quite similar to a family. After all, like the American author Richard Bach once said, “The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life.” Even if we’re not all best friends with each other or if we haven’t known each other for long, we’re always kind and respectful to one another. Additionally, we have all made hapJULIANA AGUILAR

py memories with one another, which keeps us bonded. Every senior has a special place in our graduating class and each one contributes their unique attributes and talents to Venus High School, and all of that is what makes us special. Not just each amazing individual, but who we are when we come together: one strong, remarkable family. Even in times such as this in which we find ourselves having to be isolated, the senior class stays together, as we support and help each other from a distance. The graduating class of Venus High School is full of outstanding, brilliant young people. as they accomplish their goals, some will travel far and some may stay close, but no matter where we go, the Class of 2020 will always be as much us, as we are of it.
